2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM13: Oilers @ Kraken – 3P2W – Rumors Swirling that Woody and Dutch are OUT and Gallant is the Favorite to Take Over

Hey y’all! Welcome back for another season of Edmonton Oilers hockey! I’m BLH and I’ll be giving you the skinny on today’s game!

If you’re new here and are wondering what 3P2W means, well, it stands for Three Players to Watch and seeing I’m as lazy as I am, I figured we’d shorten it to 3P2W.

So with that out of the way, let’s talk a little bit about what’s been going on lately in the Oilogospehere and then get into the player’s I’ve put under the spotlight for today’s matchup!

Give us a follow on the socials!

Random Pontifications

  • You know, I have a couple of theories about this year and I’m going to share them with you.
  • One, the early captain’s skate f*cked some things up. Maybe planted some seeds of mistrust with the coaches and players and possibly also between players and leadership. Hence why nobody is playing like they give a shit.
  • The whole moving to a passive d-zone setup like the Kings, does anybody else think that only works for teams that have players who’re willing to block the puck? I mean, essentially the plan is to keep shape, not let passes go through or into the royal road, and wait for the other team to make a mistake in order to hit them on the counter, right?
  • Correct me if I’m wrong, a team overflowing with skill… They’re not going to be aching to get into the shooting lanes.
  • So if the housecleaning does take place after the game tonight. What’s the holdup on Gerard Gallant?
  • I’ve heard they’ve been talking to him for more than a week if not longer. So that’ll give you some idea of how long Woodcroft’s head has been on the chopping block.
  • We’ve all heard Gallant’s the front-runner to take over and I think he’s willing to come in but personally, I wonder if he’s more interested in a short-term gig with the Oilers. I mean, there were rumors last year that he was going to take over in Calgary but that didn’t come to fruition. Perhaps we can take that as a sign that Alberta doesn’t scare him off.
  • That said, there’s a contract waiting for him to sign. I’m very certain of that.
  • And can somebody tell me how Glen Gulutzan might escape another round of coach firings in Edmonton? If that happens and he’s named interim, I’ll be calling him Teflon going forward because he seems to slide out of every sticky situation.

The BLH Instagram account is growing like crazy! Three weeks ago when we started to get it back going we were at a shade over 1900 followers and now we’re gunning for 2000. So please, head on over and give us a follow as we’re posting exclusive content over there that won’t be published here or on our Twitter page.

Three Players to Watch for the (team)

  • Seattle’s 3rd Line of Tolvanen/Gourde/Bjorkstrand – This trio has combined for seven goals and eight assists over their last five games. They are on an absolute tear right now. Gourde is especially going to make his presence noted against an easily annoyed Oilers team.
  • #17 Jaden Schwartz (7g 6a 13pts) – six goals and six assists in his last 10 games and 31 shots to boot. He’s firing on all cylinders for this Kraken team.
  • #29 Vince Dunn (2g 10a 12pts) – He’s ticking along at a point-per-game pace on Seattle’s top pairing. Him and former Oiler Adam Larsson have incredible chemistry.

Three Players to Watch for the Oilers

  • To be honest, there’s not even one player on this roster I’m invested in keeping an eye on in this game. I think maybe Sam Gagner, Dylan Holloway, and Zach Hyman are the only ones who’re still giving it their all until a new coaching staff is hired.
  • Is Pickard starting? If so, I think he’d be a guy I’d probably watch closer just to see if somebody can get this team a save.

The Next Twelve Games (#2-#13)

  • 10/14 vs. Canucks – I think the Oilers will take 2/2 vs. Vancouver to start the year. (W)
    • (4-3 LOSS)
  • 10/17 @. Predators – The Preds don’t scare me. Their roster is in shambles. Poor Jusse Saros and Roman Josi. (W)
    • (6-1 WIN)
  • 10/19 @ Flyers – Their forward group looks entertaining but they’ve got nobody on defense. (W)
    • (4-1 LOSS)
  • 10/21 vs. Winnipeg – The Jets are always a tough out. I like their chances. (L)
    • (3-2 OTL)
  • 10/24 @ Wild – Minny isn’t as good as they used to be but still very solid. (W)
    • (7-4 LOSS)
  • 10/26 vs. Rangers – I like NY’s defense and goaltending here. (L)
    • (3-0 LOSS)
  • 10/29 vs.Flames – Calgary is going to surprise a few this year. (L)
    • (5-2 WIN)
  • 11/2 vs. Stars – This will be a very tight game. (W)
    • (4-3 LOSS)
  • 11/4 vs. Predators – Leon will continue to light the Preds up. (W)
    • (5-2 LOSS)
  • 11/6 @ Canucks – I’ll take Edmonton for a third time here, Alex. (W)
    • (6-2 LOSS)
  • 11/9 @ Sharks – I don’t even recognize half the names on SJ’s roster… (W)
    • (3-2 LOSS)
  • 11/11 @ Kraken – I like Seattle’s roster. Well-rounded. (L)

Edmonton Oilers: Would You Make This Swap?

There are reports out of Russia this morning that New Jersey Devils RFA Pavel Zacha has agreed to terms with KHL club Avangard Omsk. Note though that no signing has been reported yet, just an agreement to terms. The club itself has distanced itself from the news and claimed it to be premature.

In the event that Zacha does actually sign with Avangard, he will not be able to return to the NHL until the 2020/21 season as NHL-out clauses are forbidden in the KHL.

You’re right, this has nothing to do with the Edmonton Oilers except for the droves of media and fans that have already jumped on the Jesse Puljujarvi for Zacha train… Would you make that deal? I sure wouldn’t.

Zacha was a fine player, if not a bit overhyped, in the OHL with Sarnia back in 2014/15 and 2015/16, but like Puljujarvi, he was rushed a bit. In his draft plus one season, he played for New Jersey and managed to scrounge up 24pts in 70 games. In the following two seasons, he’s only managed to increase his production per year by one point (25) and in just this last campaign, he was sent to the AHL for four games where he put up five assists in five games. Getting sent to the minors in year three after two years in the NHL full-time can’t be a great sign, can it?

Personally, I don’t think the big Czech has the ceiling that Puljujarvi has. He looks like he could be a solid 3rd line player who contributes on the penalty kill. He’s had trouble staying healthy so far as well with seasons of 70, 69, and 61 games played. I don’t know, maybe he’s like Pulju in that he’s been mishandled so far and there’s something more. I just don’t see it right now.

If I’m dealing Puljujarvi to NJ, I want someone back who can score. Not another body to make an already packed bottom-6 even more congested. Maybe the Oilers put him in a package to get Taylor Hall? I don’t know.

A Plan I’ve Seen Before

Oilers GM Ken Holland has been accruing a massive amount of veteran players on 1-yr deals this off-season and it sort of reminds me of how the Maple Leafs have done business of recent. Basically signing cheap players for the year and then pilfering them off for draft picks at the deadline. The key being that those players were coming from Europe but could still be sent to the AHL or they were veteran NHLers that would interest NHL teams looking for depth on their playoff run.

Given that the 2020 NHL entry draft is friggin’ loaded, is this the plan for the Oilers? They’ve got fourteen players on expiring contracts between the big club and their AHL affiliate. It makes perfect sense to play the season out, deal as many of those expiring contracts away at the deadline and then give the kids in Bakersfield a run out to end the year.

Edmonton Oilers: Pretty Obvious Why Puljujarvi Wants Out

Whilst I’ve always been of the opinion that this has been agent-driven, the trade request has finally come out of Jesse Puljujarvi’s mouth and therefore I’m a bit disappointed it has come to this. The Cult of Hockey has a good post out now on this whole situation and a bit of insider info on the drama that I’ll get to later, but first I just want to talk about it from a different point of view.

I think that we need to take what we get with a grain of salt. At the moment, we’re getting a ton of coverage from the Oilers side of things or perhaps more the “local” side of things. I’m of the belief that most of what we’re hearing is coming from a former employee of the club, but I’ve got no proof to give you on that. It’s just a hunch. I think that the media machine is in full character assassination mode at this point (you’ll see on that later) and Jesse’s camp is unable to fire back. The people who are leaking the info know this and are taking the opportunity to get their shots in.

That being said, I don’t think any of this is coming from Ken Holland or Dave Tippett. As far as I understand, they’ve told Jesse that he has a spot on this roster if he comes back. NOT come back and earn it or come back and compete for it. It’s yours to lose… And yet, he still won’t back down from his request…

Now, because Edmonton is so “dedicated” to the Oilers, we’ve got a weekly update on this drama but it’s only coming from one source… Is that fair? Is it okay that we only get one party’s perspective? Because what it’s doing is making Jesse look like an asshole while the team is getting away unscathed.

I might be wasting my time because most of the fanbase is going to take the word of the media, but I really feel like things have to be said.

First off, the “trade request” translation from Jouni Nieminen might be a problem. I talked to a source out of Finland and was told this,

Translations between English and Finnish are hard and Finns speak so literal and blunt, even if they don’t mean to be. There are conditional words that are built into the language, so in English they don’t translate except as the more definitive version of the word being used. For example, deal and contract, there’s a distinction there, right? And in Jesse’s quote, he said, I’d like to, not, I will or I want; but the translation is the same unless you can see the changed form of the verb. The point is, the subtlety is lost. My opinion? I think he was stating his wishes and not making demands.

Translating from one language to another is always a pain in the ass no matter the language and we have to be careful when we do that (I’m talking from experience) and speaking as someone who lives in a non-English environment, when someone says something to you and you think you’ve got it but you’re not 100% sure, you tend to just go with it instead of asking the person you’re talking with to repeat what they’ve just said. Could that be construed as “arrogance” or “stubbornness”? Probably, but is that the first place you’d jump to? Doubtful. How many times does it have to happen before you’ve decided that you’ve done all you can and now the problem lies with the other person?

I feel that everyone is a teacher in one way or another and at one time or another and so I think I can safely say that everybody has had an experience giving instructions and not having the message get through. It really relies on your ability to communicate, doesn’t it? So why couldn’t experienced coaches like Todd McLellan, Glen Gulutzan, Manny Viveiros, and Ken Hitchcock get through to Pulju BUT Jay Woodcroft could? Who was really out there building Jesse’s confidence in a meaningful manner?

When did this become more about portraying a 21-year-old in such a negative light because someone out there needs the validation that it wasn’t them instead of saying that the relationship is fractured and it’s unrepairable but at least everyone can amicably go their own way…

There’s a lack of accountability coming from the organization and I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised. When’s the last time an NHL club went public and said they were wrong in the development of a player?

I was passed along a message from a prominent NHL European head scout that basically said there are concerns about how much damage has been done to Jesse in the past three years. The note said that nobody is worried about his talent, it’s massive and that NHL execs are more fearful about what’s been done to him mentally. Adding to that, they felt that this was always going to be the thing with Jesse, how would he adjust to the game from where he’d been.

Puljujarvi and his agent took a wrong turn when they decided to go public (both times) instead of keeping quiet. They don’t have the ability to fight back in an insular market like Edmonton where the fans hate the media but eat every word they say.

The Latest from The Cult of Hockey

I have a great deal of respect for Kurt Leavins and the guys at The Cult of Hockey. I read all of their posts and listen to all of the podcasts. That said, I’m having a hard time with Mr. Leavins’ latest and so I’d like to comment on a few of the things said. You can read his article here.

While I have written and still think it’s possible Puljujarvi will be in camp this Fall, the bigger question has really become: How did we get to this point? There’s no question the organization has made its share of mistakes in developing the player.

I think it’s only fair to point out that Kurt isn’t coming at this from one side and that he’s just reporting what he’s been told. So if we’re going to have any negative feelings, they should be directed at the person who we think is providing him the info.

-It has been described to me by multiple sources close to the team how Todd McLellan invested hours upon hours into trying to un-lock Puljujarvi when he first arrived in Edmonton. One of Todd’s frustrations was Jesse’s inconsistency in getting to the net. There, the player’s size & skill combination could be a real factor. When Puljujarvi would do this and was successful Todd would not miss the opportunity to praise him. He would point out how positioning on the play was critical. But then the next shift Puljujarvi would stubbornly appear back on the perimeter again. Todd got frustrated.

Why in the world would McLellan be trying to change this kid’s game? Basically telling him, “What worked for you in Finland, ain’t gonna work in the NHL son.” Bob Stauffer has spoken to this sort of thing in the past, right? Breaking a player down and building him back up. Could you imagine if someone took a former World Junior MVP and said to him that his game, the style of play that got him to where he is today, won’t work and he’ll have to transform it?

A nod to those old nWo shirts from WCW wrestling. The oBc: Old Boys Clubs shirt is something every hockey/wrestling lover would enjoy! Click the image above to get yours today!

Can you imagine an 18-year-old player having inconsistencies in his game? Shocking. I know.

The Oilers gave Jesse 28 games as a very young teenager before sending him to Bakersfield where he was nearly a point-per-game player on a team with no real offensive talent to play with. Even then, his coach was benching him for “inconsistencies”.

What is it that Gerrard Gallant said about accountability?

“It’s a game of mistakes. You’re not going to be perfect every time you’re on the ice, and then when mistakes happen, you forget about them and you move on… I’m not holding my players accountable for making mistakes. If you worry about making mistakes, you’re not going to play a good game. I want you going out there and thinking you’re gonna make the good plays and do the right things on the ice. So don’t worry about your mistakes.”

Can you imagine if coaching greats like Todd McLellan and Ken Hitchcock had adhered to that philosophy where Jesse would be today?

-Part of McLellan’s struggle was that he was often in the position of being “the bad cop” on the staff. Perhaps a good complimentary step would be to assign a coach to him whose job would be to “catch Jesse doing things right”? So this past fall Manny Viveiros was brought in. One of his key assignments was to attach himself to the young Finn which he did. But Manny didn’t even make as much progress as McLellan had. And remember: Viveiros has a reputation of being able to connect with today’s player. Observers say it was if advice would go in one ear…and right out the other.

Two things here,

  • I thought Viveiros was brought in to help with the PP (Obviously not).
  • At what point was Viveiros assigned to Jesse? Was it before or after Pulju’s hips started to bother him? Was Jesse his only assignment? What kind of methods were used to attempt to “get through” to him?

Is it possible that 98 had already checked out by the time that Manny was given this task? Additionally, is it out of the realm of possibility that getting through to kids in junior and the NHL are two completely different balls of yarn?

-New head coach Ken Hitchcock was so confident that he had the answer he reversed a decision to have Puljujarvi spend the rest of the season in Bakersfield. Much to the consternation and confusion of the Puljujarvi camp, the Oilers recalled him yet again. Hitchcock is the very personification of stubborn when it comes to insisting that players play for him a certain way, especially without the puck. But as it turned out Hitch (the 2nd winningest coach in NHL history) didn’t have the keys to the car, either. The winger’s TOI over his last 10 games topped 10 minutes only 3 times. 3 other times it fell into the single digits. Yes, the bad hip also contributed to that.

What a mistake this was… Everything was going so smoothly at that point too. It wasn’t long after this that the trade rumblings started to come out…

So we go from “bad cop” McLellan to “tyrant” Hitchcock in an attempt to “unlock” Jesse? What in Sam’s Hell is going on? How does this line of thinking even make sense? Sure, the “good cop” routine didn’t pan out (allegedly) but what about Jesse’s time in the AHL said to anybody that he should be recalled let alone recalled then given a game to show what he’s got, and then thrown back to the bottom-6?

Puljujarvi has been one of the team’s best forecheckers since he landed in Edmonton and yet, the team never capitalized on his reach and speed. Instead, they wanted him to “grind” better or be a better net=front presence.

-Meanwhile, though all of the above, his teammates struggled to connect with him on the ice. Often, especially on the power play, Puljujarvi would repeatedly head to the wrong spot. He would literally bump into them. When they would try to explain it to him their words of advice seemed to fall flat. Was he not listening…or not agreeing? Eventually, although none of these players would ever dream of saying this in public…I am made to understand that they quietly asked just not to play with him anymore. There’s no suggestion they disliked him as a guy. Just that he was just hard to play with.

This is a massive problem with me and it speaks to the lack of proper leadership on the team. A leader doesn’t go to the person above him and say that it’s not working out with a teammate on the ice. If anything everybody tries to find a way to make things work out. You do what it takes until it works.

John Shannon spoke to this earlier in the year, hinting that Connor and Leon didn’t want to play with Jesse and Bob Stauffer has said on countless occasions that Pulju didn’t build up enough credit with his teammates.

Is it possible that Jesse’s teammates’ words fell flat because he’d heard them talking smack about him? And boo hoo, cry me $20M worth of tears. Jesse’s hard to play with. Give me a bloody break! Who sounds like the entitled ones now?

Now how would you feel if you were making strides with a teammate and things were going really well, the confidence was building, the trust was returning and then seeing that teammate traded? How would your trust level fluctuate? How would you feel if you just wanted to get an opportunity to show what you have but your other teammates have gone behind your back to tell the coach not to give that to you? That’s some high school behavior right there.

This team cannot have the young stars calling the shots, I don’t care who stands at the blueline together before each game. They’ve got to bring in a veteran player who can still play and wouldn’t have a problem telling others how he sees things.

That’s where it went wrong with Lucic’s “leadership”. As soon as he lost his hands, he lost his clout. I’m sure the players still respected Milan, but it’s not the same as having an older player who can still produce AND show the young leaders how it’s done, right? These are the days I really wish the Oilers could’ve secured Jaromir Jagr’s signature back in the day… He’s exactly the kind of player I’m talking about. Too bad Calgary ruined his last year in the NHL…

Did you know that Puljujarvi played over 30% of his PP TOI last season in the first month of the year and over 30% of that TOI was spent in game 1 versus NJ. So what I’m wondering is where these occasions are that we’re being told about when he wasn’t in the right position? Pundits say it happened, but I never hear when or during which game. I feel like they weren’t last year because we’ve been hearing about them since his rookie season and if the coaching staff was using those instances from year one as an excuse not to play him on the PP in year three, that’s bullshit. I can’t honestly see that being the case, but are we then blaming the rink size or the language barrier here or what?

Did Jesse perhaps just not understand? I think we’d all have time for that issue, right? Well…there has been a lot of ink spilled on Puljujarvi’s perceived language barrier. However, one particular person who was in that dressing room last season was asked about that very factor, and he answered:

“No, he knows way more that he lets on”.

That same person (who shall remain anonymous) was then asked, “So what’s the problem with Jesse, really”?

The answer, shrugged back, was once again: “He’s just stubborn”.

Huh. You don’t say…

Some folks are going to say this quote came from Connor McDavid, but it didn’t. I can assure you of that. It probably would’ve come from someone who Jesse would’ve spent actual time with.

Say, have you ever met a 20-year-old who has been through what Jesse has that wasn’t stubborn?

I’ve heard that Leon used to get pretty pouty when he wasn’t playing with Connor. I don’t recall him getting held accountable during those days. Weird because the pouting worked for him, he’s now McDavid’s full-time winger.

I hope for the love of Christ that Holland flips the script on these boys and the media coverage of the team. The culture of all of it is still off in my opinion and we’ll find out this season too. We’ll see who’s racking up points in the garbage games IF there are any and what’s getting reported throughout the season.

So…if you’re a prospect for whom things have just not gone your way (and again, not all his doing by any means) at some point…don’t you figure out that “stubborn” isn’t a trait that is going to do you any favors?

If this isn’t all of his doing, according to the person providing Leavins with this info, I’d sure like to read some reports with as specific examples and quotes from players stating so. Saying the team is on the hook for this debacle.

It’s pretty obvious why Jesse Puljujarvi wants out.

Edmonton Oilers Rumors and BLH Mailbag: How Holland Might Open Up the Cap Space

How’s everybody’s week going? Since the Oilers haven’t fired someone from the Old Boys Club nor have they hired some ex-coworker of Ken Holland’s or Dave Tippett’s, it’s a tad slow. So let’s pick that up a bit.

Lots of pundits are talking about how the Oilers defense is going to be “transformed” this off-season, most notably speaking on this is Bob Stauffer. But the catch is, some mad contracts will have to be moved and I don’t think I have to beat around the bush as to who those players will be.

Kris Russell and Andrej Sekera have often been talked about over the previous three seasons as defensemen that will have to be traded at some point simply due to the amount of money they make. It’s my understanding that the more likely of the two to be moved is Kris Russell. Ken Holland LOVES his veterans and Andrej Sekera is a VERY respected member of the Oilers’ locker room.

The days of “When in doubt, off the glass and out” are coming to a close and since that (and blocking shots) is Rusty’s bread and butter, I would say we might not be seeing him in an Oilers uniform in 2019-20.

He won’t be the only contract moved mind you. Contrary to what the media is saying in Edmonton, I think Milan Lucic finds a new home. He’s wanted out for two seasons now and I do reckon Holland finds him a fresh opportunity.

But how will they do it? My best bet is that they’ll package draft picks and prospects with those contracts. What prospects and draft picks? I’d hate to see them do it, but perhaps Jesse Puljujarvi will go with one and one of Caleb Jones, William Lagesson, Ethan Bear, or John Marino might go with the other.

I’ve been told that if there’s a team that would like to move a centre, Edmonton might move their 2nd round pick. I guess the Oilers are looking to upgrade their 3C position for the foreseeable future. Out of these centres, who I believe to be available, which ones would be fair compensation for a 2nd round draft pick?

  • Erik Haula (VGK)
  • Nick Bjugstad (PIT)
  • JT Miller (TB)
  • Nazem Kadri (TOR)
  • Viktor Rask (MIN)

Now, of course, some of those players would cost more than a 2nd rounder, but I do wonder about teams like Vegas, Toronto, and Tampa because they are in dire straights with regards to their cap. Is this the year you really go hard after Kadri because his relationship with his team and fanbase probably couldn’t be any lower? He’s a 30-goal man and he can fill in at 2C… He’s also a mega-pest and for me, I’d gladly accept the odd bad penalty for a player of his ilk.

Yakimov Staying Home

Last week I’d wrote this about Bogdan Yakimov,

According to a source of mine, Bogdan Yakimov will sign with the Oilers for 1-year soon. Of course, this could all change. As I always say, but as of right now, I’ve got two sources on this and they’re both in alignment with each other. If it does come to fruition, I don’t think this will be a two-way deal. Can you see Yakimov coming all the way from Russia without a guarantee to be playing in the NHL?

To add to that, there’s probably a good chance that Severstal Cherepovets offer was much better than the one Edmonton was offering anyhow.

So my source was out to lunch on this one. It happens. But then again, maybe they had the right info but things changed. I try not to go all=in on things that are passed on to me because the majority of the time, things do, in fact, change. Hence the disclaimer.

The BLH Mailbag

@StillAStyxFan asks: With Yakimov resigning in the KHL, do you think that the Oilers dodged a bullet by not having him in the lineup?

Possibly. He wasn’t really putting up great numbers in the KHL and he was on three teams last year. Not the kind of indicators that scream “NHL PLAYER”, right? But on the other hand, he’s a lot more skilled than Kyle Brodziak.

@AhmedMayta asks: Who are your most likely candidates to be brought on as assistant coaches to Mr.Tippett?

Tough call Ahmed. I’ve been watching this cat and mouse game between the Oilers and all of the hockey pundits covering the team and nobody has really been on the ball. Lots of folks are talking about Jim Playfair and Mark Lamb (nobody going to make the obvious Old Boys Club comment here?) joining, some in Philly are saying Dave Hakstol (although that’s been shut down recently).

I’m not as convinced that Tippett and the Oilers will go with an ex-coworker here. Scott Gordon did really well with the Flyers after Hakstol was let go and Jim Matheson speculated that he had an interview in Edmonton. Same with former Kings coach, John Stevens. Would Ray Whitney come back (insert Old Boys Club comment here) and re-join his former coach in Arizona? What about Doug Weight?

My feeling is that they’ll spare no expense in getting this right though.

@lowdee19 asks: What does the Oilers top 6 forwards look like going into the season?

Good Question Low Dee! I think it’ll look something like this:

Draisaitl-McDavid-Kassian
XXX-RNH-XXX

HA! Easy, right? To me, it would make sense to slot Jesse Puljujarvi in a 2RW. He’s older, wiser, more experienced, healthier, and is on the verge of busting out. The new coach would be smart to give him a try with Nuge and a free agent signing/trade (Loui Eriksson/Ryan Dzingel/Micheal Ferland?). It wouldn’t shock me if Tyler Benson made a case for that 2LW spot though, I just reckon he could use a bit more time in Bakersfield.

But let’s say that Benson does make the team and Edmonton needs to use Pulju as a sweetener to move a contract out. Well, that opens up the 2RW spot and I think there would be a few candidates out there to fill that hole like Gustav Nyquist, Joonas Donskoi, and Brett Connolly.

@ArchivistSports asks: ur fav Oilers memory of all time?

I’ve always been a fan of the underdog and the late 90’s Oilers that went to battle with the powerhouse Dallas, Detroit, and Colorado teams created a lot of impressionable memories with me but this game here is probably one of my favorites.

@nick_gon_jinn asks: Do you think we would go after Haula? If yes, what would we have to give up for him?

I think the Oilers go after him, for sure. The cost might be one of Edmonton’s B-grade prospects or a draft pick, something around the 3rd-5th round. Vegas has to make room for Cody Glass next season as well as re-sign Willliam Karlsson, so they won’t have the leverage in this one. That said, Kelly McCrimmon is a pretty savvy negotiator, so we won’t know until we do.

@24Barons asks: How is Connor’s rehab going? Any lingering effects or concerns with him being 100% when camp opens?

I haven’t heard much on this front recently. As for lingering concerns, I think there’s always a chance that things could regress. The knees are an area of the body you don’t want buggered up if you’re a player like Connor McDavid whose game relies quite a bit on speed. That said, I’m really confident that he’ll be at 100% and ready to go by the time training camp opens.

@ronnicolle asks: Any of our D worth enough to pry a forward from Fla? Bit of retained salary would Reimer be worth grabbing from them? They are going after Bobrovsky and Panarin. Helps top 6 and backup G. While moving out a D. What would Huberdeau cost us?

I think a few questions are being asked here, 1) Do the Oilers have any dmen valuable enough to pry a good forward out of Florida? 2) Would Reimer be worth grabbing from them? 3) What would Huberdeau cost the Oilers?

1 – Yes, they do. Oscar Klefbom, Darnell Nurse, Adam Larsson, and Even Bouchard would garner interest from the Panthers.

2 – Reimer could be handy to have but man is his ticket pricey. I’d prefer to go a cheaper route for the backup keeper personally unless they want to take Lucic’s contract.

3 – A lot. There were some rumors going around that Huberdeau would be part of a package to try and procure Malkin out of Pittsburgh. So unless Edmonton is looking at moving RNH plus, I don’t think it’s happening.

@oilers_ent asks: Will Holland be able to make the necessary personnel transactions that always eluded Chiarelli despite Edmonton being a less appealing market for players?

Holland learned from one of the best, Jimmy Devellano, and when Jimmy D got started in Detroit in the early 80s the Red Wings had missed the playoffs 16/18 seasons. It took him a few seasons to get things on track before passing on the torch to Mr. Holland, who simply kept the good times rolling.

I am very confident that the new GM will bring the playoffs back to Edmonton tout suite. Having the career-long connections he has and the respect from everyone in the NHL, I believe that he won’t face the same challenges that the previous GM had with regards to upgrading the roster.

Thanks for your questions folks! If I missed yours, I apologize, but I’ll try to make it up to you on the Twitter machine or in next week’s mailbag!

Edmonton Oilers: #AskBLH Mailbag – Future Flops, Adding Wingers, Trading Lucic, and More!

Happy New Head Coach day Oilers fans! This morning the newest bench boss was introduced and that man’s name is Dave Tippett. Now, I’ll be honest, my knowledge of this gentleman comes from his teams consistently giving my Oilers a hard time whilst running the early-2000 clubs from Dallas and then again when he was coaching the Coyotes of Phoenix. Also, I do believe his glorious mustache might’ve made an appearance in a few early Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em VHS tapes from back in the day. Remember those? VHS tapes… Man did I spend a lot of time at the old Video Spot in Camrose as a youth…

Anyways I digress. The presser was encouraging. I think Tippett said all the right things and touched all the bases necessary in order to appease all the different factions of this fanbase. Now, the work begins for both Tippett and Holland because if this team is going to improve drastically in its first year under this new coach, upgrades will need to be made at near every corner of the roster.

The #AskBLH Mailbag

Yesterday I asked for some questions on the Twitter machine and you fine folks delivered, I will now address said queries.

@timboggsDOTcom asks: Who will be the next big Oilers flop?

Well, I guess it depends on your definition of flop. I mean, could Ostap Safin be considered a flop? He hasn’t really done a lot since being picked by the Oilers. I don’t consider Jesse Puljujarvi or Kailer Yamamoto flops because neither has been brought along correctly and both have had to deal with considerable injuries since joining the pro ranks. If I had to pinpoint it for you, I think I’d say one of the defensemen who is being projected to graduate from Bakersfield will probably fail to make it. Be that Caleb Jones, Ethan Bear, William Lagesson, or Dmitri Samorukov.

@mattitude99 asks: Will Holland add two top wingers?

No, I don’t think he’ll add two. He might upgrade one. I reckon the team is behind the 8-ball a bit again and other teams know that. Another thing is, they might just have a top-winger in Edmonton in Jesse Puljujarvi. From all accounts there, the rehab is going VERY well and he’s working hard on improving his English (which isn’t that bad as it is), but I think IF the Oilers keep him and re-sign him, he could impact this roster in a positive manner in 2019/20.

@toyboy48 asks: Two part question, 1) Do you think Milan Lucic will be moved this off-season? 2) What team do you think will pick him up and for what?

That’s a tough question but I do feel like the trade chatter is stronger than ever. That said, Holland is a man who likes his vets and if there isn’t a trade there that he feels will make his team better somehow, I think he holds onto him. Could Lucic turn into some version of Shane Doan for the new coach?

So to answer your questions, 1) Maybe and 2) If he was getting traded, I would think it would be to a team in a warmer climate.

@IainAJohnson asks: What players, if any, will move into the Oilers lineup next year from Bakersfield?

Edmonton needs some cheap contracts at the bottom of their roster, so I could see someone like Joseph Gambardella graduating amongst the forwards. My personal preference is Patrick Russell mind you, but I’m not the GM. Holland mentioned perhaps 1-2 dmen joining from the farm and to me that screams Caleb Jones and William Lagesson. I don’t think a goalie will make the jump nor do I think Cooper Marody (skating) or Tyler Benson (too green yet) will make the leap full-time at forward in 2019/20.

@JezzeG asks: I’d like you to guess as to what the defense will look like in 3 years. Do you see a trade being made for a higher-end RHD?

I don’t think we’ll see that trade unless the team is making the playoffs. Fans might be thinking that Adam Larsson has played his last game as an Edmonton Oiler and that he could be moved in order to facilitate a trade to bring in a Tyson Barrie, but I don’t see it. The best way is to draft and develop at this point.

As for the 2021/22 defense? It’s hard to say because who knows about free agents and future trades, so if we’re just going by internal graduation, I’d say this.

Klefbom/Bouchard
Nurse/Jones
Lagesson/Bear

@mattitude99 asks: Can Holland trade Russell and Benning to free up the cap?

Yes. I firmly believe that these two players will be playing elsewhere next season. Now, will they be moved to free up the cap? Not sure there, but if one or two dmen are coming up from their AHL club, roster spots will need to be cleared.

@StillAStyxFan asks: Sounds like a completely new coaching staff accept one.. Do you honestly think they are going to keep Dustin Schwartz as Goalie coach? You’d think Holland would have realized that it’s a weakness? Since every goalie under him has regressed?

Hmmm. Good question. Holland is a very smart man that has seen it all at this point. I reckon he’d have poked around a bit on the goaltending front, be that the goalies themselves and the coaches. My feeling is that when everyone thought Sean Burke was being interviewed for the GM’s chair, he was actually being interviewed for the assistant GM’s job and that IF he does come on board, part of his responsibilities might be shoring up the goaltending.

@ComeFromAwayNL asks: If Lucic’s $6 could be dumped by trading away prospect and/or picks, what would you do with the new cap space? UFAs? Cap tight team to trade with?

Good question! I’d probably use that new cap space to try and make a deal with Toronto to bring in Nazem Kadri. I don’t know what the future holds for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but I can be certain he’s not re-signing in Edmonton for $6M a year again. So I’d like to bring in a player who has performed very well in a middle-6 role. Sure he’s a bit erratic, but I like that unpredictability. Plus, he scores and draws penalties.

On the other hand, maybe a guy just sits on that cap space and waits until the trade deadline to utilize it should the team be in a spot to make the playoffs.

@RScafone asks: Why do the Oilers seem risk-adverse to hiring a younger coach? It seems counterintuitive to bring a younger assistant in to bridge the age gap. Just hire a younger guy to coach and have all plays/directions come from one mouth.

Probably they just want structure and smoother waters ahead. Like I said above, Holland is big on veterans, be those coaches or players. I understand Jeff Blashill isn’t the most veteran of coaches in Detroit, but I do believe that he was simply swinging the pendulum the other direction after many years of vet coaches before him.

Another thing is the pressure to make the playoffs next season. Dave Tippett has a history of making an immediate positive impact on his teams and I would reckon that had something to do with the hire as well.

@AnnaDanychuk asks: Lucics comments a little while back about playing for other teams particularly Vancouver, suggests he may be mentally checked out for playing for the Oilers, doesn’t want to play for this team. Has Holland any wind of this? He’ll bring the team down cuz he’s not happy. IMO

Is it possible for a GM to add two top wingers and a solid second pairing dman in one off season without using RNH or Nurse ?

From all accounts, Lucic’s wishes to play elsewhere have had little to no impact on the dressing room. The players like Milan and love playing on the same team as him. I think Jason Strudwick has spoken to this in the past in that every locker room has players who aren’t happy with their current situation, so it’s nothing out of the ordinary, but they are professional and they know how to do their jobs regardless.

It’s always possible, but what do you want to sacrifice to do it? Salary cap? First round draft picks? High-end prospects? If you were happy to move Evan Bouchard, I’d be willing to be you could get a really good winger for him. I wouldn’t marry myself to the idea that RNH and/or Nurse will be career Oilers.

@edmoildrops asks: How good is Spencer Knight? Last similar situation I can recall was MTL taking Price 5th overall in 2005. Price was ranked somewhere like 13-14 I believe. Is Knight worth a gamble at 8? Or are any of the forwards in the Oilers’ range too good to pass up?

Look, this goalie is going to be a starting netminder in the NHL someday. He’s being compared to Carey Price (5th overall selection?) and Bob McKenzie even went to the lengths to say that he might be the best goalie to EVER come out of the US. The Bobfather isn’t usually wrong on these things. He’s one of the calmest goalies under pressure that I’ve ever seen and the way he handles the puck and moves laterally… Good Lord… Think Marty Turco spliced with Jonathan Quick and then mix that with some Vasilevskiy.

If your team needs this sort of player, you pick him and then bring him along the right way because we all know the value an All-Star goalie can have to a franchise. So if you’re the Oilers, do you feel like Stuart Skinner or Olivier Rodrigue have starting potential and how far away are they? Are they garnering attention from other clubs? Could you make a deal to improve the roster somewhere else in the future because you’d have a Spencer Knight coming?

@chriscurtola asks: when you get your inside Oilers information, how do you determine when and how to put it out there. Also any interesting insider stories you can tell us without naming names?

Sometimes I just ask if it’s cool to publish because that’s not always the case. But I’m pretty liberal with my insider stuff. As for insider stories, there’s not too much really. I mean, I was asking how many other employees of the Oilers do side-jobs for the team recently, right? Every wondered how Bob Stauffer seems to know about Edmonton’s moves before they happen? I don’t believe it’s because he’s the host of Oilers Now or the colorman for their radio broadcasts.

@JM84YEG asks: when did you change your name from Eklund? What’s Tencer like?

(In the voice of Sean Connery) Right after I gave your mother and good bonestorming! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

@RINKLYFEBABE asks: Can we trade Lucic this off season or would we have to buy him out?

Either would work but I wouldn’t suggest buying him out. She’s a costly choice that one is. I would say a trade is likely in the future of Milan Lucic at some point, but I wouldn’t say it’s a guarantee this offseason.

@Randall_B_Noble asks: Do you think we’re keeping any of the assistant coaches?

I don’t know. I would say that every head coach likes to have his own guys. Tippett said today that he needs to talk to the current ACs before making a decision, but I reckon he’ll bring one or to of his own men in.

Thank you to everyone who submitted their questions! I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did!
