Edmonton Oilers: Draisaitl’s Agent on Working with Peter Chiarelli

Leon Draisaitl’s Agent, Mike Liut (Yeah, that Mike Liut), recently spoke with Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman on their latest 31 Thoughts podcast and one of the topics they spoke about was what it was like negotiating Draisaitl’s most recent contract extension with Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli.

Here’s the transcription from the pod!

Friedman: One of the biggest situations in the league right now is Nylander (William) and reportedly and I’m one of the people that’s reported it, one of the issues is he doesn’t want to be too far away from the top salary players on Toronto’s roster. You went throught a similar negotiation with Draisaitl and McDavid, how much was that a factor of where McDavid was going to be?

Liut: It’s a factor, there’s no question about that. The Draisaitl negotiation, for me personally, I enjoyed it. Peter and I we got to a point where he approached me at the draft and said “I’m not avoiding you, I just don’t have anything else to say.” and I said, “me too!”

So to a point you kinda get stuck a little bit at times but we went through a whole analytics thing he was looking at because they (McDavid and Draisaitl) were playing together, was it with me/without me, you know it was a beta program. It was “who drives the play?” and our analytics said they drive it better when they’re apart than together which would make sense because they got to share the puck and nobody drives it better than Connor McDavid. You know, he’s just gone, right?

For me, it was sort of an intellectual discussion about how the game is perceived today. You know Leon’s playoff success that year, what he meant to the team, what his attributes were going. So we’re into analytics, we’re stepping out of analytics into what our eyeballs see and then at some point you gotta make a deal, which we did.

Not really a lot said there but I find it interesting that each time I hear a GM or an agent speak about Peter Chiarelli they generally have positive things to say about their experiences, whether it be how logical and straight-forward he is or like above where Liut says he enjoyed the experience and how it turned into an intellectual discussion about how the game is perceived today. I find that the only people that don’t like dealing with him are the people that have never actually dealt with him apart from in their mind.

I was sort of hoping to get a little more insight into the negotiations and the analytics part, to be honest but nevertheless, that little tidbit about how important it was for Leon to be as close as possible to the top earner on the team shed a bit of light into the mindsets players are going into contract negotiations with these days.

I’ve said this before I’m sure but I’m very happy with what the Oilers gave Leon Draisaitl and I’m not one that believes he has to be driving his own line for it to be a fair deal. If Leon scores more with McDavid, Great! At least he’s scoring because man does the Oilers MSM love writing about Draisaitl when he’s not scoring. It’s like clockwork. I’m not sure how to find this information, and perhaps you could help me out here, but are there any players that have scored as much with McDavid since he joined the league in 2015 as Draisaitl has?

Maybe they’re meant for each other. Maybe Draisaitl is the Kurri to McDavid’s Gretzky.

If that’s the case, I hope McLellan does the right thing and keeps them together. You never know what kind of greatness might be unleashed.

Edmonton Oilers Opinion: The First Line, Why Not Do What Boston and Colorado Are Doing?

The Edmonton Oilers have a problem. They aren’t scoring and it’s costing them games.

The RNH/McDavid experiment is apparently over and now it’s back to the Leon and Connor Show but my question is, why not put all three on the top line?

Long term it isn’t a good idea obviously but this team needs a shot in the arm offensively and if the 3rd line is going to get 4th line minutes, a first line of RNH/McDavid/Draisaitl could definitely pick up that extra TOI and give the opposition matchup nightmares.

Montreal is up next for the Oilers and they are flying. Max Domi is scoring again (9pts in his last 5 games), Brendan Gallagher is lighting the lamp (7pts in his last 10 games), Jonathan Drouin is realizing his potential (5pts in his last 5 games),  and Tomas Tatar (4 goals in his last 5 games) has come in and contributed on the scoresheet consistently as well. On the downside, Carey Price isn’t performing like the $10M goalie we know him to be and their defense is vulnerable as they’re not the most agile defenders in the world.

I think that if the Oilers ran the following line combinations and lines two through four could simply hold their own, that would give them an excellent opportunity to reverse their fortunes and kick this scoring drought. It’s as if they caught something from the Penguins…

RNH-McDavid-Draisaitl
Rieder-Strome-Rattie
Lucic-Khaira-Marody
Caggiula-Brodziak-Kassian
Chiasson

Look, I get it. These are not ideal lines but it’s what the Oilers have at the moment and it’s not as if they’re incapable of playing good hockey. They are and we’ve seen it. I mean, is the roster that the Vancouver Canucks icing really better than the Oilers roster? No, of course it isn’t because they believe in themselves and they’ve got a coach who can relate with them, who is willing to make mistakes with them, and isn’t coaching for his job at the moment.

On the other side of the coin, if the Oilers did load up their first line like Colorado does with MacKinnon, Rantanen, and Landeskog or Boston does with Marchand, Bergeron, and Pastrnak, and it doesn’t work… Well, then the Oilers are up Shit Creek without a paddle.

In that scenario, I’d blow up the lines completely and just search for anything that gets traction. Maybe throw Milan back up with Leon and Nuge down to the 3rd line. Something like this,

Caggiula-McDavid-Rattie
Lucic-Draisaitl-Marody
Rieder-RNH-Strome
Khaira-Brodziak-Kassian
Chiasson

Then just go at it wave after wave and try to use that centre depth as much to their advantage as possible.

You know, if we’re being honest with ourselves, are the line combos really the problem? Is the problem really sitting between the players’ ears? This roster is not as bad as it’s playing, I truly believe that but for whatever reason they’ve got some serious issues when it comes to their reactions to getting scored on which really shouldn’t be to anybody’s surprise as the Oilers are the 2nd youngest team in the league.

These ridiculous ups and downs will continue until either they get the right mix of veterans and young players or until the young players are old enough to manage their emotions maturely.

This team really needs to get back down to basics and start firing that bloody puck and going to the blue paint. I know it sounds cliche but so many goals are scored right there. Watch, Brendan Gallagher or Andrew Shaw tonight, they will be getting their noses dirty all night and it’ll drive the Oilers nuts. The result will probably be a goal from Gallagher or he’ll have a direct hand in one. Drake Caggiula had better be taking notes.

As it is, the lines for tonight’s game look as such,

Caggiula-McDavid-Draisaitl
Rieder-RNH-Chiasson
Lucic-Strome-Marody (Rattie)
Khaira-Brodziak-Kassian

Klefbom/Larsson
Nurse/Benning
Garrison/Gravel-Russell

If Russell is down to the 3rd pairing I’m going to guess he’s dinged up and might get the scratch. As for the forwards, I pray for that 2nd line. Alex Chiasson’s heater is over and now the Oilers are stuck with him until his next one. If there’s a next one.

I am hoping for a Mikko Koskinen start as well. He hasn’t been the losing goalie in his last four starts and I feel like he’s the better of the two available netminders at this point in time. Cam Talbot will have to “earn” his way back into the starter’s role I feel and I think it’s fair as well based on Todd McLellan’s accountability policy. To add to that, I think Talbot needs to “earn some currency” with his teammates too so that they actually want to play for him when he minds the Oilers net.

My prediction for tonight’s game: The Habs fans will be louder than the Oilers fans. Shocking. As for the game itself, as homerish as it sounds, I like the Oilers here.

Edmonton Oilers: Weed Wednesday Pots the Oilers A Comeback Win. Chronic Issues Remain as Seconday Scoring Still Blunt

I wanted to see how references to marijuana I could fit into that title. How’d I do? Nice to see Canada getting with the times. Mind you, it’s not for me. I tried it and it didn’t really do anything for me apart from make me hungry and tired and irritated because I was too tired to eat. We’ll see if we can toss a few more references into this post to make it a bit more entertaining.

There are two things that have bothered me since the end of the game versus Winnipeg until now.

  • The hate on for Jason Garrison
  • The unrelenting love for the PP from the MSM

Now both have been good and bad and what I mean by that is Jason Garrison is a 34-year-old PTO signing. He was brought in to play sparingly in my opinion. I’m of the belief that the primary reason was to add a more veteran presence to the locker room and to be a mentor to Evan Bouchard and the other young defenders on the team.

And the powerplay has been excellent so far but I’m not so sure if it’s all down to the all-lefty system.

Garrison did not have an amazing game last night (nor did his partner Matt Benning… Again). Adam Lowry basically made Garrison his bitch on both his goals. But the funny thing about hockey is that one play can make or break a game and it was Jason Garrison that kept the puck in the Jets zone enabling the Oilers to score the game-tying goal.

Had Jason Garrison not stopped that puck and given it to McDavid, we might be having a much different conversation right now. It doesn’t hurt to find some positive in an ocean of negative every now and then.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idNAIirb1s0

As for the all-lefty powerplay, the Oilers are 4th in the NHL (4/12 for 33.3%) and that is out-bloody-standing compared to where they were last season but if you look at each goal scored with the man-advantage this season for Edmonton, you have to ask yourself, how many are really a product of the all-lefty system.

  • Goal 1: Milan Lucic scores after McDavid rushes the puck into the Devils zone, circles the net and finds Lucic in the slot.

  • Goal 2: RNH moves the puck down low to Leon who fires a pass cross-crease to McDavid who awkwardly backhands it through Lundqvist somehow.

  • Goal 3: Leon carries the puck out of the Oilers zone and passes to a streaking McDavid who blazes past the Jets defense and beats Hellebuyck on the backhand.

  • Goal 4: From the high-slot, Nuge rings one off the post, the puck bounces around the slot a bit and then finds its way to McDavid’s stick, Connor buries it easily.

So out of those four goals, which one(s) do you think is(are) a product of the all-lefty system?

I’m going to say goals no.2 and 4 because there was some set up required and the secondary goal was to get the puck over to McDavid. I believe that they might be using RNH as the primary shooter in this scheme as he’s been set up quite a few times already and hit the post on at least two, maybe three occasions. Teams seem to be leaving him alone as they cover McDavid and Nuge has got a very deceptive wrist-shot.

MAKING COCO

How many of you made it out to the premiere of Making Coco at Rogers Place? I erroneously mentioned in a blog that the premiere was on Tuesday. My bad.

I’m really looking forward to watching this documentary as I felt Adam Scorgie did an outstanding job at setting the bar for not just hockey documentaries but sports documentaries in general.

Ice Guardians was one of the best docs I’ve seen in a while and so I expect more of the same from Making Coco.

Don’t spoil it for me but I wonder how close the doc will be to Grant Fuhr’s book, Grant Fuhr: The Story of a Hockey Legend?

Click the image and pick up your copy today!

I’m reading it right now and really enjoying it. It’s a pretty easy read as Bruce Dowbiggin sets the stages for different times in Fuhr’s life and then Fuhr comments on them throughout each chapter.

Game 5: September 13, 1987 – Canada 6 USSR 5 is a great chapter since that hockey game is widely regarded as one of the best games ever played. Learning how Fuhr felt going into that game having so many off-ice distractions going on in his life was so eye-opening.

If you think you’d be interested in picking up a copy, you should click this link.

Full disclosure. If you do click the link above or any other ad on my site, I’ll get a few bucks for referring you and I’d be eternally grateful because every buck I get from this site goes right back into my family be that for clothes, education, groceries, or even funding flights back home to Canada.

I’m really trying to make a go of this working from home thing and any support I get from you through the website, I know I appreciate so much, and I’m pretty sure my kids and wife as well. So thank you in advance!

Edmonton Oilers: A Roster Move is Imminent

As we get ready for the Edmonton Oilers first game of the season and Todd McLellan has said that Kris Russell will be taken off of the IR and placed into the lineup for game #1. That would mean the Oilers have too many players on their active roster and a transaction has to take place and so we’re posed with a question,

How will the Oilers rectify this roster conundrum?

#1 – IR someone

Talk over the last couple of days has pundits like Jason Gregor saying they’ll probably IR Drake Caggiula. The Drake has been having some issues with his sinuses over the pre-season and training camp and so it makes sense, right? Put him on retroactive IR and he’ll be ready for the game in Boston next week.

#2 – Paper Transaction

What this means is that the Oilers send a player to their AHL affiliate in Bakersfield without really sending him there. They simply file the paperwork but the player stays with the team.

So in this instance, the players that are eligible for a paper transaction are:

  • Jesse Puljujarvi
  • Ethan Bear
  • Kailer Yamamoto

I think this is the most likely scenario as Bob Stauffer tweeted out the lines, he had Bouchard on the 3rd pairing with Kris Russell and Ethan Bear on the 4th pairing with Jason Garrison. That tells me that Bear could get “sent down” to keep Bouchard in the lineup.

#3 – Send Evan Bouchard Back to Junior

Just what the title says. The Oilers could choose to return Evan Bouchard to his junior club in London.

Now this is fine because we all want the best for our premier prospect, right? I don’t think he’s the type that will blow the doors off the league as a 19-year-old but I could be wrong. I feel like the Oilers don’t quite have the correct personnel on their blue line to sufficiently insulate Bouchard this season. That’s just me though, you may feel differently.

The downside to this is that the Oilers will not be able to re-call Bouchard until the London Knights’ season is over.

#4 – Waivers

The Oilers could throw someone on waivers like their two recently signed PTOs, Jason Garrison and Alex Chiasson. This would open up a roster spot for Russell to be slid into.

#5 – Trade

I haven’t heard much trade banter lately. The latest rumors I was hearing were the Kassian rumors but those have died down.

Recently though, Ryan Rishaug has been talking about how he feels the Oilers are going to need to address the defense with a big trade.

I’m 50/50 on that notion from Rishaug. On one hand, I agree. The Oilers do need a 2nd-pairing right-handed defender because I don’t feel like Matt Benning is good enough to partner Darnell Nurse and face top-6 forwards all year.

On the other hand, what is going to happen to that defense structure if a trade like that is made? The Oilers have Larsson, Benning, Bear, and Bouchard who will all be vying for 3 spots next season. Add Joel Persson to the mix as well as Filip Berglund AND the new guy… THAT is a roster conundrum.

I also believe that any major roster move being contemplated or talked about has to have the Seattle expansion draft in its considerations. SPR talked about it in the podcast we did with Oilers Live last night. Check that out below.

Plus who is Rishaug prepared to trade? It’d have to be players who make a solid chunk of cheddar because at some point this year that extra cap space that Sekera’s LTIR is giving the Oilers will come off. Any player worth pursuing for the 2nd pairing isn’t going to come cheap, so is Rishaug prepared to deal Nugent-Hopkins or Lucic or Draisaitl?

Anyways, those are some of the roster moves the Oilers could make before their game with the Devils in Sweden. Tell us which one you’d like to see them make in the comments below!

The Ultimate 2018/19 Edmonton Oilers Pump-Up Video Plus a Guest Post from Toyboy 48

Helluva beating the Oilers put on the Canucks last night eh? It’s been really fun watching the kids on the right-wing emerge in front of our eyes too. Kailer Yamamoto, Ty Rattie, and Jesse Puljujarvi have been on fire this preseason and I’M LOVING IT!

It’s really hard not to be absolutely jacked for the season to start but we shouldn’t go all-in right now as it is only preseason and none of the teams that the Oilers have shellacked so far have been proper NHL squads. Last night was probably the closest we’ve seen to date and I noticed Yamamoto’s game wasn’t where it previously was but then again that line he was on with Draisaitl and Lucic wasn’t really firing as a whole.

Lucky we had Ty and Jesse tearing up the ice.

I will say this though, the team is playing infinitely faster this season than last and if they can continue that through the first month of the season (baby steps people), given it might be the hardest of the year for them, and come out better than .500, they’ll be in a much better position to see the playoffs this year.

That’s enough of my rambling, now it’s time for part 1 of the main feature, BLH’s 2018/19 Edmonton Oilers Pump-Up Video! Check it out below and please subscribe to our channel!

Part 2 of our main feature is a guest post from friend of the blog Mike Toy. If you frequent Twitter during games or on game days, you’ll be familiar with Mike as he’s a very active member of the Oilers Twittersphere.

As the Oilers continue their way through the 2018/2019 training camp, I’m reminded of how many I’ve witnessed, and how the game has changed. Back in the early 80’s I fondly remember the boys getting into camp, talking about how they had three weeks to get into game shape. Some jogged, did a few weights in the offseason, but mainly spent their time with family and friends. Golf and water sports seemed to be the most taxing athletic endeavors.

As time went on, I witnessed a huge transition in how players prepared for the season. Look at the attention to detail in today’s group of professional athletes. Personal trainers who are in sync with the team’s training group. Specific training to improve a specific area of need, i.e. strength, quickness, balance, and stamina etc. Skills coaches who provide very specific attention to areas of a player’s game that needs the most improvement i.e. puck handling, shot, backhand passing, receiving a pass etc. Sports Psychologists who work on visualization, positive reinforcement, repetition, memory, and brain stimulation etc.

Hockey, even at the professional level was always a game to me. It’s a game where you tie up your skates, and just go play. Yes, there was always some sort of structure, and style the management and coaches wanted or demanded you to play. But the players with skill, the scorers and passers, they just seemed to play on instinct. The checkers, grinders, and enforcers thrived on hard work. Today, most players thrive on hard work. It’s not about getting prepared, it’s about being prepared.

What fascinates me in today’s game, is that it’s the elite players that are driving the commitment to improvement. Or, should I say continuous improvement. You see Connor McDavid, arguably the best hockey player on the planet, in the best shape of his career. Reports and stories of how he worked on specific aspects of his game where he knew he needed to improve. From skills (primarily shooting) to a workout regimen that focused on endurance and adding muscle.

As a fan, I feel like I’ve let the team down. I’m not in the best shape of my fan life heading into the season. I’ve done a poor job at improving areas of weakness, or areas of needed improvement. I wanted to work on the senseless highs and lows that a shift, a period or a game provides. I wanted to improve how I judged a players’ performance. Improve how I view the coaches’ performance.

I think I’ll revert back to the days of the elite players, but instead, I’ll watch and fan this “game”, as if it is a “game”.

Attitude, determines altitude.
