Edmonton Oilers Off-season Moves Show Well, But Will Chia Get Any Credit?

Prior to the start of the 2018-19 season it seemed the fate of Oiler’s coaching and management was set  – at least if you believed the venom of fans and bloggers on social media and radio.

McLellan was given a reprieve with a new stable coaching support, but as for Peter Chiarelli, there was no relief.  The Oiler’s had spent to the cap due to questionable FA signings, seemingly lopsided trades, and poor player management.  All these combined to put Chia in an exclusive section of Oiler hades (Where Peter Pocklington resides).

With little to work with, it appeared the pre-season PTO’s and signings would be superficial not impactful.  if anything, the Oiler’s GM had dug his team in deeper . . . or did he?

Doing a lot with not a lot

The completion of the 2017 – 18 season, left many holes in the Oiler’s line up.  Gaps on the wing, veteran leadership, and of course, defence.  The need on Defense ultimately remains a festering sore, but overall there have been some pleasant surprises from Chia’s off-season tinkering.  Here’s my review so far.

Mikko Koskinen (rating, B+): The Oiler fan base exhaled a collective sigh of disbelief when Chia chose to go out on a limb and sign the 30 year-old KHL all-star.  Things looked even dodgier when Koskinen was lit up in the pre-season, but since then his record and play has steadily improved to where he is providing positive competition for Cam Talbot.  It’s early days, but in 4 games he has 3 of the Oiler’s 8 wins including a shutout.  If he continues to improve it will give the Oilers real options in goal and justify his salary.

Alex Chaisson (rating, A): Prior to the season start there were a lot of unknown’s around Chiasson’s signing.  Injured at the beginning of the season there were some questions as to why he was there.  But since hitting the ice, Chiasson is letting his play do the talking.  With 6 goals in 10 games, he’s doing everything Milan Lucic should be doing at a fraction of the cost.  He’ll pay the price by going to the hard areas of the ice and he’s been rewarded – both in production and in the coaching staff’s confidence.  Chiasson does have consistency issues, but If he scores even 15 goals he’ll provide excellent value and a stop-gap for when the prospects can catch up.

Tobias Rieder (rating: B): Rieder has no goals in 16 games but he does have 7 apples and with his speed provides the speed component when teamed with countryman Leon Draisaitl.  He seems to have good chemistry with LD and on a team where there is a lack of pure speed (save Captain Connor).  Overall he seems to be providing what was expected.

Kyle Brodziak ( rating -B): It’s my belief that when the Oilers traded Matt Hendricks it left a large “lead by example” gap in the dressing room.  Brodziak does not embody the same level of leadership, but he is a veteran professional who brings a strong work ethic to the rink every day.  He’s a good example to the young players and has the skill to make timely contributions from the fourth line.  Typically you can’t expect too much from a fourth-line add, but so far so good.

Jason Garrison (D to C-): Garrison was never a fast player, and now he’s even slower.  As a result, he is often a defensive liability but, when he is playing well positionally he can survive and, more importantly, he provides a cannon on the 2nd powerplay unit.  It may not be enough to keep him in the lineup, but when he is, he will fire away at will.    It’s good to see because there are far too many passes on the Oilers power play in my opinion.  The good news is, he is not costing the Oilers a lot and can fill a role.

Tyler Benson fights for the puck

Help on the way?

For the first time in recent memory the Oilers have a farm and prospect system that appears to be in a position to support the big club.  On the Bakersfield Condors farm team the kid line of Marody, Hebig, and Benson are producing at a  ppg or better.  Chiarelli did not physically scout all these players but Cameron Hebig was a very shrewd signing that is paying nice dividends so far.

It’s difficult to project prospects but Marody has already shown well on a brief call-up, at least one of these forwards could be with the big club next year, maybe more.  Add standout prospects like Ryan Mcleod and Kirill Maksimov ( non-first rounders ) and you have to say the Oilers have the looks of a legitimate farm system for the first time in . . . well, I can’t recall when the Oilers have had a well-stocked system, to be honest.

What’s a fair assessment of Chiarelli’s Work

To be fair, Chiarelli has more than earned much of his criticism.  The Griffin Reinhart trade could go down as one of the worst in NHL history.  Many would give the Taylor Hall trade a similar critique, although the question would also need to be asked, what would the Oiler’s Blueline look like without Adam Larsson?  Personally, I would have liked to have seen more in return for Larsson, but in my view, it’s clear: Tylor Hall would not have reached his potential here, and may have negatively impacted Mcdavid’s.  Lucic?  Well, we all liked the signing at the time, now, not so much.  For the Oiler’s, bold moves, are not likely.  Instead, strategic value signings, good drafting, and a well-stocked prospect system, and farm are how the Oilers will move forward.  And on those points, Chia is doing ok.

Edmonton Oilers: Weed Wednesday Pots the Oilers A Comeback Win. Chronic Issues Remain as Seconday Scoring Still Blunt

I wanted to see how references to marijuana I could fit into that title. How’d I do? Nice to see Canada getting with the times. Mind you, it’s not for me. I tried it and it didn’t really do anything for me apart from make me hungry and tired and irritated because I was too tired to eat. We’ll see if we can toss a few more references into this post to make it a bit more entertaining.

There are two things that have bothered me since the end of the game versus Winnipeg until now.

  • The hate on for Jason Garrison
  • The unrelenting love for the PP from the MSM

Now both have been good and bad and what I mean by that is Jason Garrison is a 34-year-old PTO signing. He was brought in to play sparingly in my opinion. I’m of the belief that the primary reason was to add a more veteran presence to the locker room and to be a mentor to Evan Bouchard and the other young defenders on the team.

And the powerplay has been excellent so far but I’m not so sure if it’s all down to the all-lefty system.

Garrison did not have an amazing game last night (nor did his partner Matt Benning… Again). Adam Lowry basically made Garrison his bitch on both his goals. But the funny thing about hockey is that one play can make or break a game and it was Jason Garrison that kept the puck in the Jets zone enabling the Oilers to score the game-tying goal.

Had Jason Garrison not stopped that puck and given it to McDavid, we might be having a much different conversation right now. It doesn’t hurt to find some positive in an ocean of negative every now and then.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idNAIirb1s0

As for the all-lefty powerplay, the Oilers are 4th in the NHL (4/12 for 33.3%) and that is out-bloody-standing compared to where they were last season but if you look at each goal scored with the man-advantage this season for Edmonton, you have to ask yourself, how many are really a product of the all-lefty system.

  • Goal 1: Milan Lucic scores after McDavid rushes the puck into the Devils zone, circles the net and finds Lucic in the slot.

  • Goal 2: RNH moves the puck down low to Leon who fires a pass cross-crease to McDavid who awkwardly backhands it through Lundqvist somehow.

  • Goal 3: Leon carries the puck out of the Oilers zone and passes to a streaking McDavid who blazes past the Jets defense and beats Hellebuyck on the backhand.

  • Goal 4: From the high-slot, Nuge rings one off the post, the puck bounces around the slot a bit and then finds its way to McDavid’s stick, Connor buries it easily.

So out of those four goals, which one(s) do you think is(are) a product of the all-lefty system?

I’m going to say goals no.2 and 4 because there was some set up required and the secondary goal was to get the puck over to McDavid. I believe that they might be using RNH as the primary shooter in this scheme as he’s been set up quite a few times already and hit the post on at least two, maybe three occasions. Teams seem to be leaving him alone as they cover McDavid and Nuge has got a very deceptive wrist-shot.

MAKING COCO

How many of you made it out to the premiere of Making Coco at Rogers Place? I erroneously mentioned in a blog that the premiere was on Tuesday. My bad.

I’m really looking forward to watching this documentary as I felt Adam Scorgie did an outstanding job at setting the bar for not just hockey documentaries but sports documentaries in general.

Ice Guardians was one of the best docs I’ve seen in a while and so I expect more of the same from Making Coco.

Don’t spoil it for me but I wonder how close the doc will be to Grant Fuhr’s book, Grant Fuhr: The Story of a Hockey Legend?

Click the image and pick up your copy today!

I’m reading it right now and really enjoying it. It’s a pretty easy read as Bruce Dowbiggin sets the stages for different times in Fuhr’s life and then Fuhr comments on them throughout each chapter.

Game 5: September 13, 1987 – Canada 6 USSR 5 is a great chapter since that hockey game is widely regarded as one of the best games ever played. Learning how Fuhr felt going into that game having so many off-ice distractions going on in his life was so eye-opening.

If you think you’d be interested in picking up a copy, you should click this link.

Full disclosure. If you do click the link above or any other ad on my site, I’ll get a few bucks for referring you and I’d be eternally grateful because every buck I get from this site goes right back into my family be that for clothes, education, groceries, or even funding flights back home to Canada.

I’m really trying to make a go of this working from home thing and any support I get from you through the website, I know I appreciate so much, and I’m pretty sure my kids and wife as well. So thank you in advance!

Oilers Preseason: Oilers Poised to Offer Contracts to TWO Players

Pre-rumor warning:

As usual, anything that you read here today you should take with a grain of salt. Anything can change at any time and therefore what I’m about to tell you should be taken as about as seriously as your Grandma telling you she’s trying out for next round of the X-Games (they’re still around right?).

WHO ARE THE OILERS POTENTIALLY ADDING?

This isn’t really NEW news per se, something that everyone has been hinting towards since the last game vs. Arizona but here goes nothing!

As you know, Chiarelli invited three players to camp on PTOs, Scotty Upshall, Jason Garrison, and Alex Chiasson. Upshall’s knee has taken him out of consideration so far but Garrison and Chiasson have had good camps and with that, they will probably be getting signed to 1-yr deals very soon and I’d imagine with Edmonton having a shade over $1.4M in available cap space that they’re both going to come in between 650k to 750k and with NMCs…

I’m joking!!! About the NMCs… Maybe.

How Will Those Two Players Impact the Current Roster?

Well, from my vantage point, signing Jason Garrison would enable the Oilers to put Ethan Bear in the minors until Evan Bouchard is sent back to London after his 9 games are up, it would give the team a steady veteran presence on their blueline and in the locker room, and he’d another left-handed option for their “All-Lefty” powerplay…

As for Chiasson, he’d definitely make Zack Kassian that much more expendable and I’m hearing there’s a solid market for the rugged winger. Personally, I’d try to keep him because come playoff time he could prove to be quite valuable in the right circumstance but if he is interested in moving on, then that’s that.

The Oilers are stacked with left-handed shooters including two other players in the bottom-6 that Chiasson could push out of a job in Drake Caggiula and Pontus Aberg but then someone would be playing their off wing if both Kassian and Chiasson were in the lineup at the same time.

The Drake is fighting an illness this camp and I hope he gets over it soon because when Caggiula is on his game, he can be an irritating little water bug but Aberg is on another planet. He’s got a bit of the Omark in him in that he knows how skilled he is (not as much as Linus mind you) but he picks and chooses when to give 100%.

I reckon Aberg will be put on waivers nevertheless and that move alone should make it possible to fit Alex Chiasson onto the roster without sacrificing Kassian or Caggiula.

MY THOUGHTS

I’m definitely all for adding two veteran players like Garrison and Chiasson. They’ve shown to me that they are worthy of roster spots on this year’s Oilers. It’d be really different though if other players on the team weren’t playing their way off of it but as things are, it is what it is.

I don’t think a big deal should really be made of adding a no.7 defender and a no.12/13 forward (THOSE “fans” will though, they always find a way) but signing Jason Garrison and Alex Chiasson may just open things up for Chiarelli to make other moves down the road.

The next 6 weeks or so you should keep your eyes peeled to the roster moves of other teams. In the next week, watch the waiver wire very closely… You may see a player or two hit the wire that Edmonton makes a trade for.

Oilers Preseason: Stauffer Adds New Name to Oilers Rumor Mill

Yesterday on Oilers Now, host Bob Stauffer threw a new name into the hopper for Oilers fans to mull over, Boston Bruins defender Matt Grzelyck.

Here’s exactly what Bob said about the Boston rearguard,

I’ll give you a guy right now. I’m looking at Boston and they’ve got Matt Grzelyck and there’s a guy right there that Keith Gretzky drafted that I’m not even sure what Boston even had. He’s making $1.4M and I know Joe Haggerty reported last week that Matt Grzelyck might not make their team.

That’s the type of player who can skate and move the puck but think of the situation Boston’s in. They’ve got McAvoy and Carlo on the right side, they signed John Moore and on the left side they’ve got Chara, they’ve got Krug, I missing somebody else decent. Like, they’ve got 6 pretty good defensemen. Oh Miller! Anyways, the bottom line is they’ve got 6 guys and right now Grzelyck’s looking like the no.7 D.

If I’m Boston, I don’t think Boston and Edmonton are ever going to make a deal but if they put him on waivers that’s the type of guy that- and he’s making $1.4M.

Now maybe they decide to keep him there as the no.7 defenseman. I don’t know because they’ve got Kampfer who to me is the type of guy you want as a no.7 defenseman cause he’s not making $1.4M, he’s making 700k.

You can listen to the quote on yesterday’s edition of Oilers Now here. The Grzelyck part starts around the 16:40 mark.

You might remember Matt Grzelyck from a goal he scored against the Oilers last February. If not, here it is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIV2FUW3su4

There’s not a lot to say about Grzelyck if I’m being honest. He’s a smaller puck-moving defender that is a bit more offensively minded. He was possession positive last season playing in a 3rd pairing role for Boston and was received generally well by the Bruins blogosphere here and here.

I wonder why Stauffer would bring up a player like this when the Oilers basically have three defenders in their system (Bear, Bouchard, Jones) that could do an equal or better job as Grzelyck for a lower price. Not only that but why would the Oilers be interested in adding ANOTHER left-handed defenseman?

The other thing that bothered me is that Stauffer mentioned that salary repeatedly and I’m wondering if there’s anything there to be magnified and dug deeper upon.

Just because Gretzky drafted him shouldn’t mean that he’s an automatic candidate for acquisition but I could be wrong, not that that would be new for me. Perhaps the former BU captain would be the perfect player for the Oilers. They could send Bouchard back to London earlier, keep Bear in the minors longer, and give him the same sort of TOI and deployment Boston was giving him in order to shelter him.

JERABEK

Jakub Jerabek is another player Bob Stauffer has been talking about this week. He’s often mentioned that if Jerabek doesn’t work out in Edmonton that his agent, Allan Walsh, should be able to find him work in Europe and since he works with Vladimir Vojtek that it shouldn’t pose an issue.

My question here is, would the Oilers simply terminate the contract or would it be another loan deal and Jerabek’s contract still count on the books?

One would think that they’d do their damnedest to get that marriage annulled ASAP and retain that cap space and contract spot, no? I mean, he’s done nothing to suggest that he deserves to be on the Oilers main roster over Evan Bouchard or Jason Garrison at this point in my opinion and the fact that he’s not in the lineup vs. ARI tonight and Garrison/Bear are… Speaks volumes.

GARRISON

Looks like the old boy is in and I couldn’t agree more with the decision of the coaching staff to keep playing him. He’s looked a lot better as of recent and I’m very much in favor of the team adding more veterans to the team but it’s not only his experience and talent that I like about Jason Garrison, According to Bob Stauffer he’s been given rave reviews for his locker room demeanor with younger players from his coach last season, former Oilers asst. coach Rocky Thompson .

Chicago just gave Brandon Davidson a 1-year deal worth 650k (why had to get greedy with the Oilers is beyond me) so I hope the Oilers give Jason Garrison a similar deal if he keeps up the good work. Edmonton could use a steady Eddie on the blueline.

Former NHL Defenceman Shane Hnidy on Oilers PTO signing Jason Garrison

It’s funny. Sometimes Oilers news or rumors are flying at you day-by-day and then sometimes it takes a week to get something worth writing about unless you feel like blogging about donairs. I can’t do it. The juice simply isn’t worth the squeeze.

Anyways, yesterday Shane Hnidy was on The Jason Gregor show to discuss the Vegas Golden Knights and more importantly to Oiler fans, Jason Garrison. Edmonton’s shiny new PTO signing. I’ll toss the audio up at the end of this section for you to hear if you’d like.

The foot speed is the big thing. Garrison is still a quality guy. Could be a depth guy you have for injuries but if there was one thing that was knocking, it was probably his foot speed.

Nothing new there. Jason Garrison is 33 years old and to be honest, I think they’re bringing him in to play a sort of Chris Kelly-type role. A veteran comes into camp and pushes the other players a bit, teaches the kids some lessons.

If he did sign, I could see it being more of a Matt Hendricks-like role. He’d be a PT NHLer where the value he’d bring would be off of the ice. Especially if Evan Bouchard spends any time outside of pre-season with the Oilers because Edmonton doesn’t have that old general on the back end to teach the youngins.

He’s a big strong defenceman. Big Shot.

Right. A big shot he does have but it’s been too long since it was an effective weapon at the NHL level, I’m not sure if we can even say that’s one of the pros to signing him anymore. Even Garrison said on Gregor’s show today that he’d probably bring more defensively than offensively.

I think his salary last year kinda hurt his opportunites. So maybe depending on what you can get him in, maybe if he has a good showing at camp, which he’ll be trying to do at his age to show he has some stuff left.

Yeah, could very well be but even then, if the Golden Knights saw any value in bringing him up, they would’ve and he would’ve stuck.

He thinks the game very well, a guy that’s been around but depends on what price point possibly you can get him on. I think he could be a good depth guy to have.

If you didn’t know, Garrison has the same agent as current Oiler Brad Malone and was coached by former Oilers assistant coach Rocky Thompson in Chicago (AHL) last season.

You can listen to the segment here. Fast forward to 12:20 to get right to the Hnidy part.

SUPPORTING THE OILERS

I read over on the Cult of Hockey about an Oilers supporter who is regretting renewing their season tickets this year and I wanted to comment on that.

At least he didn’t write a letter and put his stuff in a box and give it to his parents.

That said, the Oilers fan in that article isn’t far off from Letter Boy. What I mean by that is, I can understand if you wanted to pack up shop after the Boys on the Bus were pilfered off or during the Tambellini days but why in Sam’s Hell would you regret having the chance to watch, at the very least, Connor McDavid 41 times a year?

Full disclosure, I never had season tickets as a kid growing up in Camrose. Oilers season tickets were like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. A myth to me. It’s crazy talk to me when I hear people giving them up, especially now with McDavid and Draisaitl, Nuge, Nurse, Larsson, and Puljujarvi.

I just really feel like quitting now is selling low.

I will say this though, I don’t really enjoy the regular season in-game experience anymore. When I was a kid I loved it, what child didn’t or doesn’t today? But it is too expensive, the food is marginally good, the seats are okay I guess, and it’s generally more of a hassle than not. I prefer watching the games on the TV and in a pub setting where it’s a bit noisier and the drinks are cheaper and I can hear some commentary. So from that perspective, I get it.

But if you’re not looking forward to the season because social media has soured your Oilers experience and you can afford to have season’s tickets (not a lot of people can but buy them anyhow), doesn’t that sound a bit entitled? It sounds like an uptown problem to be honest. GROW A PAIR AND GET OFF OF SOCIAL MEDIA! It’s that simple.

Be grateful there’s even a team there! Be grateful you even have season tickets! Be grateful you can afford them…

I mean, an experience is what you make it and if you’re letting an outside influence take control of said experience, you’ve got to remove that influence.

Maybe my life is that boring that the day the hockey season ends for the Oilers, I’m counting the days until training camp opens. Maybe I remember the days where the Oilers were nearly moved to Houston and I cherish the fact Edmonton even has a team for the residents of the city to support. Maybe that little boy who liked to go to games at Northlands Coliseum and race down to the glass to watch the players warm-up still lives on inside me.

Find that little boy or girl inside you that fell in love with the Oilers for the very first time. You won’t regret it.
