Edmonton Oilers: Koskinen ISN’T the Problem, Summer Moves, and a New Name from Stauffer

Tough game for the Oilers last night. Vegas simply wasn’t the team they needed to be playing on the hind end of a back-to-back. Something else that the team didn’t need was for their coach to be playing Mikko Koskinen and they got burnt because of a silly decision on Hitchcock’s part.

The three-meter man can’t be fully absolved from that performance mind you. He did let in some questionable shots on his glove hand and 5-hole which has resulted in a mad witchhunt from Oilers fans and media alike.

This morning on Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer and Brenden Escott were discussing the big Finn’s performance and had this to say,

Escott: He’s got to sort that out (glove hand) if he’s going to be a bonafide starter in this league.

Stauffer: That’s low-hanging fruit because it’s so easy to focus on. What I would say is this, Mikko Koskinen did not start back-to-backs over in the KHL. The moment the Oilers traded Cam Talbot, they partially did that to alleviate, not the tension, but the fact that we had two goalies here and both were UFAs. Koskinen got the extension but from that point forward Mikko’s had to have a couple of back-to-back starts.

He was not very good at handling pucks and he was poor no angles early in the year and he’s worked a lot on that. But when he starts in back-to-back games Brenden, I think what happens is fatigue sets in and maybe he drops is glove even lower and the book’s out on him. And in this league, unlike the KHL, guys can score from anywhere because they can really shoot the pill and they can make that shot. They’re closer to the net, they’re not as boxed out.

So what I would say is, 100% the criticism is fair and it played a factor last night. He wasn’t very good last night. Absolutely fair criticism against a good team. BUT what I would also say is he works really hard.

If he doesn’t get it straightened out, he’s only going to be a 1a/1b goaltender. He’s only going to be a 45-game-a-year guy and they’re going to have to get somebody else to be it. But if he works as hard on the glove going forward and gets more conditioned to, and I do think the Oilers have to create a situation where they got another goalie here that’s good enough to push him, it’s not just 70 starts and 15 starts. I think that’s completely unrealistic.

I know how hard he works in practise and I see him out there every morning before everyone else.

If he doesn’t get it fixed, he’s only going to be an average starter. If he does get it fixed, he has a chance to be a legitimate top-20 no.1 goalie that gives you a chance to win every day.

What I will point out is that Koskinen is one of the main reasons the Oilers are even competing in this playoff race and since Talbot has been traded, Mikko has taken the starter’s role and ran with it.

Folks might complain about his glove hand but let’s not forget about all the goals that used to go over Talbot’s shoulders let alone all the goals he let in on the first shot of the game or period…

Mikko Koskinen is NOT the problem.

I would add to this that the Oilers could not pass the puck if their lives depended on it last night. Darnell Nurse and Kris Russell were horrid with the puck movement. Their favorite teammate to pass to was the boards and the glass. I lost count at the number of times an Oiler defender rimmed it around the boards to a Vegas Golden Knight. Dave Staples made a funny comparison on his post-game vlog with Bruce McCurdy last night. He said that Nurse and Russell were Smid/Staios 2.0…

I do believe that the Oilers will re-vamp their defense this summer and two guys I wonder about being elsewhere in 2019/20 are Nurse and Russell.

The Oilers need puck moving defenders and scoring wingers. Full stop. Kris Russell and Andrej Sekera aren’t going to bring you a top-6 winger. The Oilers will most likely have to pay to have those players moved but Darnell Nurse will bring you that winger and with players like Caleb Jones, William Lagesson, Ethan Bear, Evan Bouchard, and Joel Persson looking to make the squad next season; I think it’s very fair to say Darnell Nurse’s position on the team could be under threat due to his inability to pass the puck.

Click the pic and grab a 16-bit McDavid tee!

What the naysayers will come back with is Nurse’s numbers this season and to that I’d say, he’s capitalized on the PP he’s been given by Hitchcock. His 5×5 numbers are on par with last season when his TOI was elevated due to Klefbom being out of the lineup. So what happens when you take that extra TOI and cherry time on the PP away… I would venture a bet that his offensive stats would decrease…

He’s not what those stats suggest. He’s a fine top-4 shut-down defender but he gets spread thin when he’s asked to take on a more offensive role too. A better skating Adam Larsson if you will. The fact that the league has been tamed down has nullified one of Nurse’s strongest attributes, his meanness.

After watching him for his whole career, I’m just not sure about the hockey IQ. He’s still young mind you and there’s lots of room to grow but even if you look at it from a financial point-of-view, do you think that he’s worth more than $5M per year? $6M that he’ll probably be asking for? I don’t and it’d be in the Oilers best interests to move him while his value is high and Edmonton has the prospect depth it does.

William Lagesson can do what Darnell Nurse does for a fraction of the price plus he’s been brought along the right way so the peaks and valleys will be smaller. In theory.

I do believe the Oilers will try to acquire Tyson Barrie this off-season due to the fact that the Avs will have Cale Makar and Connor Timmins competing for a spot on their blue line in 2019/2020.

So let’s say for shits and giggles, the Oilers find a way to open up cap space by dealing Russell and not take any money back in the deal. The difference between Barrie and Russell is $1.5M and I would have to guesstimate that in order to bring in a player like Tyson Barrie, Edmonton would need to move a package of players that would include a top prospect and a roster player or a high draft pick. That would also alleviate some cash from the Oilers payroll given the top prospect would probably be someone from this group:

  • Jesse Puljujarvi
  • Kailer Yamamoto
  • Ethan Bear
  • Ostap Safin
  • Kirill Maksimov
  • Ryan McLeod
  • Dmitri Samorukov

Apart from Puljujarvi, I don’t think any of those players will be making an impact at the NHL level next season. Are the Oilers a better team if their defense looks likes this going into next season?

Klefbom/Larsson
Nurse/Barrie
Sekera/Jones
Persson

There’s a puck mover on every pairing here. Now you might argue that the first pairing lacks a true puck mover but I happen to believe that both Larsson and Klefbom are very smart players.

Edmonton could go all-in as well and use Larsson to bring in a skilled winger. I think there’s a very plausible reason that we heard Larsson’s name connected to Toronto at the trade deadline this year…

Don’t rule out Jared Spurgeon, Justin Faulk, or Rasmus Ristolainen either.

STAUFFER THROWS OUT TWO NAMES

Before his segment ended on this morning’s Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer threw out two more names that might interest Oilers fans. One I’ve already mentioned on the blog months ago.

You know Vegas had two guys last night playing down in the American Hockey League, Daniel Carr and Brooks Macek. Those guys would be playing for the Oilers and be better than some of the options Edmonton has.

As I said, we’ve spoken about Carr before. He’s a local lad (from Sherwood Park) who I’d say looks like Brendan Gallagher-lite. He can skate at the NHL level, his edgework is good, he’s tenacious, he likes to shoot… There’s a lot to like with this player.

Brooks Macek I’m not as familiar with, but if Bob is throwing his name out there, that’s a good indication that the Oilers probably have some interest or have had interest in the player.

According to Eliteprospects.com, Macek is 26-years old and was a 6th round draft pick of the Red Wings in 2010. He’s 5’11” and 181lbs.

This season with Chicago, Macek has managed to post up 60pts (26g/34) in 63 games.

Interesting to note, after five years in the WHL with Tri-Cities and Calgary, he spent the next five years seasons playing in Germany where he scored 183pts in 255 games.

I think both could be had for under $1M per season and it would be prudent for the Oilers to start adding these sorts of players to their roster. I’m not of the belief that Cooper Marody or Joe Gambardella will be able to cut it at the NHL level unless they do something about their skating. They are great AHL players and would be VERY useful there but you in today’s NHL you have to be able to skate or else the Linus Omarks and Anton Landers of the world would be everyday NHLers.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments below.

Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Chiarelli to Move a Goalie According to Stauffer

If you were lucky enough to listen to the Edmonton Oilers’ radio broadcast last night, you might’ve heard Bob Stauffer say that he thinks a goalie is going to be moved to clear up cap space and that he’d like to see a defender brought in. But who’s making that trade if Chiarelli gets the axe in the next seven days?

Well, I don’t think it takes too much to figure out which goalie Stauffer’s talking about. Given that comment followed a game where Cam Talbot got shelled for seven goals and how we’ve been talking about him being available on more than one occasion this year.

I’ve been in touch with my sources and from what I’ve gathered, I believe that there are three teams in on Talbot. Maybe more.

  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • Philadelphia Flyers
  • St.Louis Blues

I’ve wondered if Chicago would be in on him too given the current and unknown future status of Corey Crawford.

Now, out of those teams, Carolina and Philadelphia could afford Talbot’s salary ($4.166 million) outright.

  • Carolina has $31 million in cap space right now.
  • Philadelphia has $14 million available.
  • St. Louis has a shade over $2.2 million open.
  • Chicago has $6.3 million to use.

My feeling is that Philly is the most desperate to upgrade their goaltending, but I’ve heard all they’re offering is defenseman Robert Hagg and that simply won’t do. Edmonton has enough left-handed defenders as it is and it’s my understanding that they aren’t looking to acquire young players.

I’m not sure about the status of the negotiations between Wayne Simmonds and the Flyers right now but I’d be very happy with a straight swap (Talbot for Simmonds) if that could be managed. If not him, bring me Radko Gudas!

Carolina is having major issues scoring, therefore, I’m skeptical as to how urgent they are to acquire a goalie. That said, Trevor Van Riemsdyk ($2.3 million until 2019-20) would be a very handy addition to the Oilers. He’d be an excellent 2nd/3rd pairing defender because he’s adept at moving the puck and he’s a fantastic skater. At the moment though, he’s buried behind Justin Faulk, Dougie Hamilton, and Brett Pesce.

(Fack. Why aren’t the Oilers looking at one of Faulk, Pesce, and Hamilton? Sell Nurse to them and add a sweetener. Do your team a favor, Pete! FFS.)

F*ck those guys! Click the link and grab one of these beauty shirts! We’ve also got “F*ck Bettman” and “F*ck the Refs” designs available!!!

As for the Blues, they’ve got Jake Allen as their starter and no matter how disillusioned they might be with his performances this year, I think they’re stuck with him. With that in mind, if they found a taker for him and were still interested in Talbot, I’d have time for Robby Fabbri but the more prudent acquisition (or re-acquisition I should say) would be David Perron. He’s got a M-NTC though, and I’d be hard-pressed to believe he’d waive that to go back to Edmonton.

Wondering who would be the back-up if Talbot is moved? Well, if you haven’t noticed, Dylan Wells and Shane Starrett have been sharing the net for Bakersfield lately. Weird, right? Especially when Al Montoya is right there. The Condors head coach Jay Woodcroft said that Monty had been out with sickness but it’s been a month. What kind of ailment is this that keeps a guy out for a month?

Anyways, I think if Talbot is moved, Montoya is called up. Illness be damned.

Other Moves?

From all of my conversations since last night, It looks like the Oilers are going to try and chip and chase their way into the playoffs. What I mean by that is since their hands are tied by the cap, they’ve got try and unearth another diamond in the rough ala Alex Chiasson. I’ve heard they’re looking at other leagues to find players who can help with depth scoring. Perhaps skaters with NHL experience, possibly some players who haven’t signed a contract yet this year but are still interested at playing but are training elsewhere.

Man. Wouldn’t it be something if the Oilers could get Rick Nash to agree to play out the season with them?

The brass and the coaches aren’t happy with the players’ refusal to go to the net. So they’re looking for players who have a reputation for doing so. Which I love because I’m a huge fan of net drivers. If you haven’t caught it, goals seem to get scored when there’s a bit of chaos that shakes loose.

I wish them luck in their search.

Edmonton Oilers: $2.5M Well Spent

We’re two games from twenty on the season and the Edmonton Oilers are 9-8-1 on the season. They are just outside of the wildcard spot and a win out of the top-3 in the Pacific after their 6-2 dismantling of the Montreal Canadiens.

What is it about this team? Each time this season when I’ve thought that the season was about to be lost, the Oilers have come out and played incredibly well and re-invigorated hope. I mean, their record is what it is right? Can’t really complain about that. Could it be better? Sure, of course it could be; but after last season anything above .500 makes me feel pretty optimistic. A low bar, I know. That said, we’ve all got to start somewhere and little successes over time end up building into great ones.

Would you believe it if someone told you this summer that by mid-November the Oilers would have as many as or more points than the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St.Louis Blues?

The Oilers are slated to play Pacific division teams in seven of their next eight games and I’m encouraged by their recent record vs. teams within their own division. Check this out and tell me you don’t feel good about the Oilers possibly coming out of this next 7 game stretch sitting in a playoff spot.

Edmonton has gone 36-17-5 (.655) Vs Pacific over the last 2 seasons:

2016-17: 20-6-3
2017-18: 16-11-2

How many of those games do you think Mikko Koskinen starts?

Speaking of Mikko Koskinen, the $2.5M bet Peter Chiarelli laid down on him is looking pretty good right now eh?

I remember hearing during the summer that one of Koskinen’s strengths was his ability to go side to side and in a league where teams are constantly looking to get that pass across the “royal road” for a better chance at a goal, getting Koskinen under contract seems pretty smart.

What I wasn’t expecting was Koskinen’s ability to not let out a lot of rebounds.

Now if you want to have a good laugh, go into Twitter’s search box and type “Koskinen Chiarelli”. I wonder how many of those folks are feeling silly right now…

The PERFECT gift for an Oilers Fanatic!

As I said, we’re only 18 games into the season but Koskinen has really shown to me that he was the right man to sign this summer. I mean, look at these candidates and tell me which you’d have signed after last season and then look at their record from this season and tell me if you’d still sign that player?

The ones I’d sign are making right around the same money as Mikko Koskinen. So in my eyes, Peter Chiarelli has done fine job of procurring a backup goaltender that he thought would push Cam Talbot for the starter’s job in Edmonton because Koskinen is doing just that.

Is this the end for Cam Talbot?

His stat line reads as such:
13GP 5W-7L-1OT 3.09GAA .895 SV% 1SO

It’s not great and there’s tons of room for improvement but I don’t think it is the end for Cam Talbot.

We’ve seen this story play out before when Anders Nilsson was the backup and perhaps this is simply the same scenario. So I hope that Todd McLellan practices what he preaches (#accountability) and plays Koskinen vs. Calgary this weekend and then Talbot against Vegas the next night.

The Oilers need to stick with the better goalie right now. I get that Cam Talbot is looking for his 100th win in the NHL and that will come, no doubts there, but you win and you’re in. Plainly put.

Edmonton Oilers Off-season Moves Show Well, But Will Chia Get Any Credit?

Prior to the start of the 2018-19 season it seemed the fate of Oiler’s coaching and management was set  – at least if you believed the venom of fans and bloggers on social media and radio.

McLellan was given a reprieve with a new stable coaching support, but as for Peter Chiarelli, there was no relief.  The Oiler’s had spent to the cap due to questionable FA signings, seemingly lopsided trades, and poor player management.  All these combined to put Chia in an exclusive section of Oiler hades (Where Peter Pocklington resides).

With little to work with, it appeared the pre-season PTO’s and signings would be superficial not impactful.  if anything, the Oiler’s GM had dug his team in deeper . . . or did he?

Doing a lot with not a lot

The completion of the 2017 – 18 season, left many holes in the Oiler’s line up.  Gaps on the wing, veteran leadership, and of course, defence.  The need on Defense ultimately remains a festering sore, but overall there have been some pleasant surprises from Chia’s off-season tinkering.  Here’s my review so far.

Mikko Koskinen (rating, B+): The Oiler fan base exhaled a collective sigh of disbelief when Chia chose to go out on a limb and sign the 30 year-old KHL all-star.  Things looked even dodgier when Koskinen was lit up in the pre-season, but since then his record and play has steadily improved to where he is providing positive competition for Cam Talbot.  It’s early days, but in 4 games he has 3 of the Oiler’s 8 wins including a shutout.  If he continues to improve it will give the Oilers real options in goal and justify his salary.

Alex Chaisson (rating, A): Prior to the season start there were a lot of unknown’s around Chiasson’s signing.  Injured at the beginning of the season there were some questions as to why he was there.  But since hitting the ice, Chiasson is letting his play do the talking.  With 6 goals in 10 games, he’s doing everything Milan Lucic should be doing at a fraction of the cost.  He’ll pay the price by going to the hard areas of the ice and he’s been rewarded – both in production and in the coaching staff’s confidence.  Chiasson does have consistency issues, but If he scores even 15 goals he’ll provide excellent value and a stop-gap for when the prospects can catch up.

Tobias Rieder (rating: B): Rieder has no goals in 16 games but he does have 7 apples and with his speed provides the speed component when teamed with countryman Leon Draisaitl.  He seems to have good chemistry with LD and on a team where there is a lack of pure speed (save Captain Connor).  Overall he seems to be providing what was expected.

Kyle Brodziak ( rating -B): It’s my belief that when the Oilers traded Matt Hendricks it left a large “lead by example” gap in the dressing room.  Brodziak does not embody the same level of leadership, but he is a veteran professional who brings a strong work ethic to the rink every day.  He’s a good example to the young players and has the skill to make timely contributions from the fourth line.  Typically you can’t expect too much from a fourth-line add, but so far so good.

Jason Garrison (D to C-): Garrison was never a fast player, and now he’s even slower.  As a result, he is often a defensive liability but, when he is playing well positionally he can survive and, more importantly, he provides a cannon on the 2nd powerplay unit.  It may not be enough to keep him in the lineup, but when he is, he will fire away at will.    It’s good to see because there are far too many passes on the Oilers power play in my opinion.  The good news is, he is not costing the Oilers a lot and can fill a role.

Tyler Benson fights for the puck

Help on the way?

For the first time in recent memory the Oilers have a farm and prospect system that appears to be in a position to support the big club.  On the Bakersfield Condors farm team the kid line of Marody, Hebig, and Benson are producing at a  ppg or better.  Chiarelli did not physically scout all these players but Cameron Hebig was a very shrewd signing that is paying nice dividends so far.

It’s difficult to project prospects but Marody has already shown well on a brief call-up, at least one of these forwards could be with the big club next year, maybe more.  Add standout prospects like Ryan Mcleod and Kirill Maksimov ( non-first rounders ) and you have to say the Oilers have the looks of a legitimate farm system for the first time in . . . well, I can’t recall when the Oilers have had a well-stocked system, to be honest.

What’s a fair assessment of Chiarelli’s Work

To be fair, Chiarelli has more than earned much of his criticism.  The Griffin Reinhart trade could go down as one of the worst in NHL history.  Many would give the Taylor Hall trade a similar critique, although the question would also need to be asked, what would the Oiler’s Blueline look like without Adam Larsson?  Personally, I would have liked to have seen more in return for Larsson, but in my view, it’s clear: Tylor Hall would not have reached his potential here, and may have negatively impacted Mcdavid’s.  Lucic?  Well, we all liked the signing at the time, now, not so much.  For the Oiler’s, bold moves, are not likely.  Instead, strategic value signings, good drafting, and a well-stocked prospect system, and farm are how the Oilers will move forward.  And on those points, Chia is doing ok.

Click the pic above to check out our merch!

For what feels like the first time in a very long time the Edmonton Oilers will go into a season with three capable NHL goalies under contract. Cam Talbot, Mikko Koskinen, and Al Montoya.

Your definition of “capable” may vary but as fans of the team, when’s the last time the Oilers had goaltending depth three deep at the NHL level?

They came close when they had Khabibulin and Dubnyk running the show. Do we have to go as far back as ’06 when they had Roloson, Markkanen, and Conklin? Or WAY back when the team was icing Bob Essensa, Tommy Salo, and Mikhail Shtalenkov…

If the Oilers choose to sign Nick Ellis and/or Laurent Brossoit for next season, it could be argued that two more 3-deep tier of goalies would be present for the AHL and the ECHL.

Talbot
Koskinen
———-
Montoya (NHL/AHL)
———-
Brossoit
Ellis
———-
Starrett (AHL/ECHL)
Wells
Skinner (if he signs)

That spells depth for me.

Today, Koskinen’s signing was finally announced by the team with the term and dollar amount being revealed.

1 year @ $2M w/ 500k signing bonus.

Immediately, as always, the fanbase of the Oilers went into a frenzy. The hive once again was thrown to the ground. Opinions are all over the place. As usual.

https://twitter.com/Stephane774/status/991459935002152962

Some folks cannot help themselves but to complain about every. single. thing… Must be a hard life.

What I like about the Oilers signing this player is that it gives them some depth and competition going into the season. All three goaltenders on expiring contracts, so the cream will rise to the top there and the Oilers will have a much clearer answer as to who will be minding their nets in 2019 no doubt.

One thing that happened last year that really sunk the team is Talbot’s early struggles and McLellan’s unwillingness to go with Brossoit. In my opinion, I believe that Talbot knew that Brossoit wasn’t ready and took it upon himself to look after the net as long as he could. That’s just speculation of course and we know that McLellan is a one tendy kind of guy that rarely goes to his backup which could actually undo this Koskinen signing in the upcoming season.

But if Talbot were to go down, at least the Oilers would have some competent backup to tide the team over.

I feel like $2M on the cap isn’t completely out of order and Montoya’s cap hit in the minors will be 37.5k, so I can’t argue with that. I don’t mind paying Montoya to help develop the young goalies in Bakersfield. I also don’t mind the idea of having another Finn on the roster for Mr. Puljujarvi to confide in.

But back to the cap hit.

The Oilers will have a combined hit of $6.19M for the trio of goalies mentioned above. The Oilers are about in the middle when it comes to how much teams spend on their puck stoppers but there are teams in the NHL that pay their netminders far more than that. I mean Dallas was paying their two goalies over $10M combined! Take a gander at what Carolina was paying their goalies. Paying Chad Johnson $2.5M a year didn’t make them better and the combination of Greiss and Halak couldn’t keep the puck out of the Islanders net even though they were handsomely rewarded ($7.8M combined).

This payment and term are more than some are comfortable with and that’s fine but Koskinen isn’t coming in riding his NCAA or junior hockey stats either. He’s been a very good goalie in Europe for some time and that’s worth something. In the last 5 seasons, he’s had 1 where his GAA was over 2.08 and two seasons where his SV% was under .923 (.915 and .916). To add to that, he’s 29/30 years old and it’s not fair to use the numbers he put up when he was with the Islanders organization to judge him with. Goalies develop later than skaters and the KHL is the closest league in terms of competition that the NHL has. It’s better than the AHL no doubt.

All that Mikko Koskinen has to do is come in and not be the weakest link. He doesn’t have to be an all-star or the next Mikka Kirprusoff, albeit it’d be nice, he simply has to come in and be a solid goalie for the Oilers and the Oilers have to be a solid team in front of him. If that happens, nobody will give a flying squirrel’s nutsack how much be made in 2018/19.

For me, the pros outweigh the cons here. Would I like the Oilers to pay their backup under $1M? Sure! Do I know if Koskinen is going to pan out? I do not but nobody else does either. They’re simply making a judgment based on fear.

As far as the Oilers cap situation, I believe they’ll have around $17M to play around with to sign RFAs Darnell Nurse, Drake Caggiula, Matt Benning, and Ryan Strome.

  • Nurse – bridge deal @ 3.5M per
  • Caggiula – 1 or 2 years at $1M-$1.5M
  • Benning – 2 to 3 years at $2M – $2.5M
  • Strome – 3 years @ $3M

I’m not including Slepyshev because I reckon he’s outtie 5000 and Pakarinen is gone apparently. So that makes the job a bit easier there. There are a handful of RFAs in the minors that might get re-signed but that money will hardly put a dent in the cap, so no need to spend a lot of time on that.

If my predictions come true, the Oilers will spend about $10.5M of the $17M re-signing their RFAs thus leaving $7M for UFA options. What do the Oilers need?

  • RH’d with some offensive prowess
  • Top 6 winger who likes to shoot.

UFA options:

  • (RHD) John Carlson: Nope. Not a hope in hell he’s coming to Edmonton.
  • (RHD) Mike Green: A more realistic option but not the player he was in WAS.
  • (RW) Michael Grabner: Speed to burn and scores a bit. Is he a top-6 option though? Didn’t do anything after going to NJ.
  • (LW) James Van Riemsdyk: Not fast but a great net-front presence. Will cost you though.
  • (LW) Evander Kane: Will eat up all of that remaining cap but he’s fast, gritty, and scores goals. Showing well in SJ (who I think will sign him if not Vancouver or Vegas)
  • (LW) Patrick Maroon: The LW is pretty slow but Patty has hands and will take care of business when the time comes. He scores in bunches but goes on droughts.
  • (LW) Thomas Vanek: Great complimentary player but goes Eberle in the post-season. So if your goal is to get to the playoffs, Vanek will score for you but don’t expect anything after that.
  • (RW/LW) James Neal: Will also take up much of that remaining cap and he’s 30 years old. Injuries are starting to accumulate but he’s never played a season in the NHL where he didn’t score 20 goals. Can be a real SOB on the ice too.

The way I see it is the Oilers should stay away from the big dogs on the UFA market. I really think that Kailer Yamamoto and Jesse Puljujarvi will be battling it out for the no.2/3 RW spots next season and one of them will come through with 20 goals but I hope it’s both of them.

Edmonton needs to shore things up by adding cheap veterans who have something to prove going into 2018. At the very least, if things don’t work out, they can be moved on at the deadline if not beforehand.

The Oilers have to stop trying to force things to happen either by trade or free agency. Let the tried and true method of drafting and developing take over.
