Edmonton Oilers: Finding One Goalie, Three Forwards, and One Defenseman PLUS BLH’s Top 50 2019 Draft Prospects

Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer recently tweeted out what he felt like the Oilers would be adding going into the 2019/20 season under the context of an $81.5M-$82.5M salary cap.

  • Sign 1B goalie who can start 30-35 games ($1.5M-$2.5M).
  • Add one top-9 forward ($2.5M-$3.5M).
  • Bring in two forwards for the bottom-6 ($1M or less).
  • Get creative opening up a couple of spots on defense for Caleb Jones, William Lagesson, Ethan Bear, and/or Joel Persson.

Well if I had to guess for each one of the suggestions above and taking into consideration Ken Holland’s relationships created through his time in Detroit, I would say that there’s a really solid chance that he’s going to be able to spruce up the Oilers roster in short order.

THE 1B GOALIE

I really liked Petr Mrazek’s season for Carolina and I believe there’s still a lot of game left in the 27-year-old. He played 40 games and 2.39 GAA and a .914 save percentage. If the Oilers are looking for a guy who’ll be able to play a solid chunk of the season, then Mrazek is their man. I think it would be tough to say if playing for Holland in Detroit was a pro or a con at this point. He was traded away from the Red Wings after all, but if anybody knew this guy through and through, it’d be Holland.

If the Oilers are looking for a more veteran presence here, Maybe Mike Smith. As much as I disliked him in Arizona and Calgary, he’s a pretty ornery goalie who doesn’t take any shit and he was the only Flame to show up in their brief playoff appearance this past season. I also like how he can play the puck, that said, it does come back to bite him in the butt from time to time.

THE TOP-9 FORWARD

Joonas Donskoi is my pick here. He’s the perfect middle-6 option for the Oilers. He’s fast, he can play both ways, and he’s seemingly good for around 30-40pts a year. He can skate quite well and he will go to the dirty areas. I also happen to believe that he’d be a great help to Jesse Puljujarvi and be able to mentor him a bit in the event that Pulju gives this new regime a chance. I’d reckon he’ll command close to $3M per year depending on the term length.

If the Oilers were to open up some cap space with a trade or two, I think Gustav Nyquist and Mats Zuccarello would most definitely be in their sights. I do see them demanding closer to the same dollar value and term as Jordan Eberle mind you. So would you be satisfied paying either $5.5M for five years?

Now if we come back down a bit, then I see Brett Connolly and Michael Ferland in the $4M-ish camp. Maybe Connolly will try to really bank on that career year of his and Ferland might get a bit more considering the narrative set from this year’s Stanley Cup Final. That being teams need to have tough mobile forwards to win.

And if we come right down, Alex Chiasson shouldn’t be commanding more than $2.5M nor can I see Richard Panik or Thomas Vanek charging any higher.

Some wildcards here might be Wayne Simmonds, Marcus Johansson, and Ryan Dzingel. Simmonds has really slowed down in recent years. His point totals have been decreasing and his PIMS increasing. Maybe that’s born out of frustration, but can you think of a GM that would pay him more than $4M given the unsure status of the cap and the expansion draft coming? He’s become a bit of an injury concern to boot.

Johansson was outstanding for the Bruins in the playoffs I found. His speed and puckhandling made him a dangerous target for Boston. Unfortunately, his health has been a major concern for the last two years and thus his production has dropped. What would you pay someone with a recent history like that?

As for Dzingel, I think he might be happy sticking in Columbus. He played college hockey there and with Artemi Panarin leaving, there’s pretty much a spot there for the taking. But in the case that he wants to hit the open market and see what’s out there, his speed and tenacity would be very welcome on the Oilers. Is he going to price himself out of Edmonton’s range though? Might be another guy looking at $5.5M a year.

THE TWO BOTTOM-6 FORWARDS

Daniel Carr has been on the Oilers radar for a long time. He’s basically a Brendan Gallagher-lite. Same playing style and traits but to a lesser degree. He spent the year in the AHL last season but he lit it up with 71pts in 52 games. He’s too good for that league and Edmonton could use him in their bottom-6. He’s a local lad too, so that might help getting him in under a million bucks.

Another player who spent the year in the Vegas Golden Knights organization, Brandon Pirri, would be a nice fit for Edmonton’s bottom-6. He scores wherever he goes but he can never stick. Now I’m not sure if that’s an attitude thing or what, but he produces and the Oilers need depth scoring. Had 12 goals in 31 games for Vegas last year.

Brandon Tanev piled up 29pts in 80 games for Winnipeg in 2018/19 while averaging around 14 minutes a game. 15 of those points were goals. Tanev plays a very aggressive game and he’s both fast and quick. Quite the waterbug he is. He won’t be signing for $1M but if the Oilers were interested, I wonder if he’d sign for Kassian money (a shade under $2M).

Other options here might be Adrian Kempe, who gave the Oilers fits last season with his tenacity and smart play down low. Garnet Hathaway would add some toughness to the bottom-6 IF Edmonton were looking for that, and Kenny Agostino kind of came out of nowhere to score 24pts in NJ/MTL last year. He’s got some speed to his game too.

The wildcard in all of this is Patrik Berglund. Yes, he quit the Sabres last year, turned down a crapload of cash to return home, but he says he’s ready to return to the NHL. At 31 years old, do you think he’s done as an NHLer? Would he be a decent 3rd line center?

THE DEFENSE

My feeling here is that Kris Russell and Matt Benning will be traded to open up that right side for Joel Persson and Caleb Jones. I get that Jones isn’t a right-shot defender, but he played that side almost all season last year in Bakersfield as he was pair with Mattias Ekholm clone, William Lagesson.

Getting back to Russell, no question, he’s not in the same bracket as Justin Braun, Matt Niskanen, or Radko Gudas, but he’s a wanted man in the NHL. His teammates love him wherever he goes and he’s well respected by coaches across the league.

Now if Braun can be moved for a couple of draft picks, I would think Russell could too (not a 2nd and a 3rd) and that would really create some wiggle room for Holland and co. They’ve got just over $9M in cap room right now and if they could move him without taking salary back that would take them to around $13M.

On the other hand and to make this a bit bigger of a deal, yesterday on Lowetide’s show, Tom Gazzola and Tyler Yaremchuk were discussing the possibility of moving Darnell Nurse for a right-shot top-4 defender and then using Sekera on the 2nd pair. It’s not a bad idea depending on who the dman coming back is… Ideally, you’d want someone who puts up as much as or more offense at evens than Nurse AND is a threat on the powerplay.

People aren’t going to like this suggestion, but what about Rasmus Ristolainen? His 65 points with the man advantage over the past three seasons has him tied with the $11M-man Erik Karlsson and that total has him above other all-star defenders like Kris Letang, John Klingberg, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Morgan Reilly, and Drew Doughty.

I’ve always liked this player because he’s massive, he’s tough, and he’s got a Cannon the likes Edmonton hasn’t seen since Sheldon Souray was around. That said, he’s not as proficient a scorer at evens as Nurse (60pts to Risto’s 51 in the past three years). I imagine folks will point to his fancy stats and complain as well, but it doesn’t matter which metric you use, I can most likely show you someone you might consider to be a much better defender who has similarly poor numbers there too.

Ristolainen is tied down for another three seasons at $5.4M per and if he’s putting up around the same stats as Nurse but better on the PP and the Oilers have players to fill in for Darnell, what’s the problem? Can you tell me that Darnell Nurse isn’t going to be asking for around $7M on a long-term deal next summer? If so, what number do you think he’ll sign for and do you think he’ll have earned that?

In three seasons, if it’s not working out, the Oilers could move Ristolainen if need be. It’d be easier due to his handedness and his PP production AND it would give the Oilers more time to develop their bluechip prospect, Evan Bouchard.

BLH’S TOP-50 2019 NHL DRAFT PROSPECTS

After extensive research and the use of around five draft guides this year, this is my list of 50 prospects for the upcoming 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

I dinged guys for work ethic issues or consistency problems. Players that were poor skaters were ranked lower if they didn’t have much else they could bring to the ice. If a player was considered a perimeter player, that didn’t help their case either. I do take size into consideration a bit. I found that there is a massive influx of sub-6-foot players eligible for the draft and that if everything was equal, I’d probably still take the bigger player.

Conversely, skaters who had a high work ethic and those that were outstanding skaters were ranked higher. I feel that skating is of the utmost importance with regards to the direction of hockey now. I’m also a fan of players who will play a bit old-school, meaning they aren’t afraid of the rough stuff and will get their noses dirty. Defensive IQ is as important to me as offensive IQ as well.

But as it is every year, sometimes a player is just so good at one thing, it overshadows his flaws, like Kirby Dach (consistency/work ethic) or Trevor Zegras (High risk/selfish). These players are ridiculously skilled and should be taken in the first seven picks I imagine, but for me, they drop a little bit. Whereas Matthew Boldy and Vasili Podkolzin probably aren’t as skilled as Dach and Zegras but they are much smarter players at both ends of the rink and if their offense dries up, they can still be impactful to the game.

The players in bold are where the Edmonton Oilers would be selecting.

Edmonton Oilers: Koskinen ISN’T the Problem, Summer Moves, and a New Name from Stauffer

Tough game for the Oilers last night. Vegas simply wasn’t the team they needed to be playing on the hind end of a back-to-back. Something else that the team didn’t need was for their coach to be playing Mikko Koskinen and they got burnt because of a silly decision on Hitchcock’s part.

The three-meter man can’t be fully absolved from that performance mind you. He did let in some questionable shots on his glove hand and 5-hole which has resulted in a mad witchhunt from Oilers fans and media alike.

This morning on Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer and Brenden Escott were discussing the big Finn’s performance and had this to say,

Escott: He’s got to sort that out (glove hand) if he’s going to be a bonafide starter in this league.

Stauffer: That’s low-hanging fruit because it’s so easy to focus on. What I would say is this, Mikko Koskinen did not start back-to-backs over in the KHL. The moment the Oilers traded Cam Talbot, they partially did that to alleviate, not the tension, but the fact that we had two goalies here and both were UFAs. Koskinen got the extension but from that point forward Mikko’s had to have a couple of back-to-back starts.

He was not very good at handling pucks and he was poor no angles early in the year and he’s worked a lot on that. But when he starts in back-to-back games Brenden, I think what happens is fatigue sets in and maybe he drops is glove even lower and the book’s out on him. And in this league, unlike the KHL, guys can score from anywhere because they can really shoot the pill and they can make that shot. They’re closer to the net, they’re not as boxed out.

So what I would say is, 100% the criticism is fair and it played a factor last night. He wasn’t very good last night. Absolutely fair criticism against a good team. BUT what I would also say is he works really hard.

If he doesn’t get it straightened out, he’s only going to be a 1a/1b goaltender. He’s only going to be a 45-game-a-year guy and they’re going to have to get somebody else to be it. But if he works as hard on the glove going forward and gets more conditioned to, and I do think the Oilers have to create a situation where they got another goalie here that’s good enough to push him, it’s not just 70 starts and 15 starts. I think that’s completely unrealistic.

I know how hard he works in practise and I see him out there every morning before everyone else.

If he doesn’t get it fixed, he’s only going to be an average starter. If he does get it fixed, he has a chance to be a legitimate top-20 no.1 goalie that gives you a chance to win every day.

What I will point out is that Koskinen is one of the main reasons the Oilers are even competing in this playoff race and since Talbot has been traded, Mikko has taken the starter’s role and ran with it.

Folks might complain about his glove hand but let’s not forget about all the goals that used to go over Talbot’s shoulders let alone all the goals he let in on the first shot of the game or period…

Mikko Koskinen is NOT the problem.

I would add to this that the Oilers could not pass the puck if their lives depended on it last night. Darnell Nurse and Kris Russell were horrid with the puck movement. Their favorite teammate to pass to was the boards and the glass. I lost count at the number of times an Oiler defender rimmed it around the boards to a Vegas Golden Knight. Dave Staples made a funny comparison on his post-game vlog with Bruce McCurdy last night. He said that Nurse and Russell were Smid/Staios 2.0…

I do believe that the Oilers will re-vamp their defense this summer and two guys I wonder about being elsewhere in 2019/20 are Nurse and Russell.

The Oilers need puck moving defenders and scoring wingers. Full stop. Kris Russell and Andrej Sekera aren’t going to bring you a top-6 winger. The Oilers will most likely have to pay to have those players moved but Darnell Nurse will bring you that winger and with players like Caleb Jones, William Lagesson, Ethan Bear, Evan Bouchard, and Joel Persson looking to make the squad next season; I think it’s very fair to say Darnell Nurse’s position on the team could be under threat due to his inability to pass the puck.

What the naysayers will come back with is Nurse’s numbers this season and to that I’d say, he’s capitalized on the PP he’s been given by Hitchcock. His 5×5 numbers are on par with last season when his TOI was elevated due to Klefbom being out of the lineup. So what happens when you take that extra TOI and cherry time on the PP away… I would venture a bet that his offensive stats would decrease…

He’s not what those stats suggest. He’s a fine top-4 shut-down defender but he gets spread thin when he’s asked to take on a more offensive role too. A better skating Adam Larsson if you will. The fact that the league has been tamed down has nullified one of Nurse’s strongest attributes, his meanness.

After watching him for his whole career, I’m just not sure about the hockey IQ. He’s still young mind you and there’s lots of room to grow but even if you look at it from a financial point-of-view, do you think that he’s worth more than $5M per year? $6M that he’ll probably be asking for? I don’t and it’d be in the Oilers best interests to move him while his value is high and Edmonton has the prospect depth it does.

William Lagesson can do what Darnell Nurse does for a fraction of the price plus he’s been brought along the right way so the peaks and valleys will be smaller. In theory.

I do believe the Oilers will try to acquire Tyson Barrie this off-season due to the fact that the Avs will have Cale Makar and Connor Timmins competing for a spot on their blue line in 2019/2020.

So let’s say for shits and giggles, the Oilers find a way to open up cap space by dealing Russell and not take any money back in the deal. The difference between Barrie and Russell is $1.5M and I would have to guesstimate that in order to bring in a player like Tyson Barrie, Edmonton would need to move a package of players that would include a top prospect and a roster player or a high draft pick. That would also alleviate some cash from the Oilers payroll given the top prospect would probably be someone from this group:

  • Jesse Puljujarvi
  • Kailer Yamamoto
  • Ethan Bear
  • Ostap Safin
  • Kirill Maksimov
  • Ryan McLeod
  • Dmitri Samorukov

Apart from Puljujarvi, I don’t think any of those players will be making an impact at the NHL level next season. Are the Oilers a better team if their defense looks likes this going into next season?

Klefbom/Larsson
Nurse/Barrie
Sekera/Jones
Persson

There’s a puck mover on every pairing here. Now you might argue that the first pairing lacks a true puck mover but I happen to believe that both Larsson and Klefbom are very smart players.

Edmonton could go all-in as well and use Larsson to bring in a skilled winger. I think there’s a very plausible reason that we heard Larsson’s name connected to Toronto at the trade deadline this year…

Don’t rule out Jared Spurgeon, Justin Faulk, or Rasmus Ristolainen either.

STAUFFER THROWS OUT TWO NAMES

Before his segment ended on this morning’s Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer threw out two more names that might interest Oilers fans. One I’ve already mentioned on the blog months ago.

You know Vegas had two guys last night playing down in the American Hockey League, Daniel Carr and Brooks Macek. Those guys would be playing for the Oilers and be better than some of the options Edmonton has.

As I said, we’ve spoken about Carr before. He’s a local lad (from Sherwood Park) who I’d say looks like Brendan Gallagher-lite. He can skate at the NHL level, his edgework is good, he’s tenacious, he likes to shoot… There’s a lot to like with this player.

Brooks Macek I’m not as familiar with, but if Bob is throwing his name out there, that’s a good indication that the Oilers probably have some interest or have had interest in the player.

According to Eliteprospects.com, Macek is 26-years old and was a 6th round draft pick of the Red Wings in 2010. He’s 5’11” and 181lbs.

This season with Chicago, Macek has managed to post up 60pts (26g/34) in 63 games.

Interesting to note, after five years in the WHL with Tri-Cities and Calgary, he spent the next five years seasons playing in Germany where he scored 183pts in 255 games.

I think both could be had for under $1M per season and it would be prudent for the Oilers to start adding these sorts of players to their roster. I’m not of the belief that Cooper Marody or Joe Gambardella will be able to cut it at the NHL level unless they do something about their skating. They are great AHL players and would be VERY useful there but you in today’s NHL you have to be able to skate or else the Linus Omarks and Anton Landers of the world would be everyday NHLers.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments below.

Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Oilers Eyeing Tampa Bay Defenders and a new Carr?

I read a tweet earlier this week from Joe Smith of The Athletic that mentioned the Lightning were shopping defensemen Slater Koekkoek and Braydon Coburn and what got me thinking is that Russell is already banged up and Larsson is being held out of the Cologne game due to back soreness.

The health of the Oilers defence is of the utmost importance not only to their playoff chances but the health of the development paths of Evan Bouchard and Ethan Bear. As Oilers fans, we’ve seen all too many times the Oilers throwing young defenders into the fire and it really hampering that player’s development.

I could see the Oilers having interest in both players (Koekkoek and Coburn) and when Coburn was a Flyer the Oilers had major interest in him before he was dealt to Tampa. Of course, he’s slowed right the F down since then but if the Oilers are looking for a player that can fill in on the 2nd pairing and handle the toughs alongside Darnell Nurse.

If you’re one who leans towards the statistics, Coburn non-relative statistics having him treading water. His CF% (49.21) is very comparable to players like Ryan Suter and John Carlson. His FF% (48.99) compares well with players like Cam Fowler and Aaron Ekblad. His SF% (48.38) has him in a similar block to Matt Niskanen and Erik Johnson. And finally, his GF% (51.32) slots him in with the likes of Mark Giordano and Tyler Myers.

Not all of those stats tell us if he’s THAT great of a defender, just that last season amongst dmen playing 900 minutes 5×5, he’s comparable to those other players. Is he as good as Ryan Suter, of course not. Of all the comps I slated out for you, Coburn is not near the player they are but for whatever the reason, the numbers tell us they compare in those individual numbers. I’d imagine that’s due to Tampa being so well and Coburn playing 3rd-pairing minutes against 3rd/4th line opposition.

That said, I don’t think he was being sheltered. He started most of his shifts in the defensive zone about 58% of the time.

But if we were to take his relative stats which tell us how he was relative to his teammates, they shine a brighter light on his defensive skills.

SA/60: -.84 (53/149 dmen)
GA/60: -.04 (71/149 dmen)
FA/60: -1.12 (52/149 dmen)
CA/60: -1.01 (59/149 dmen)
HDCA/60: -.13 (61/149 dmen)

I picked those numbers because they tell us a bit more about his defence. Not everything of course and if I were to really dig in I’d look at him and see how he helps the offence. How well does he help the team score goals? But I don’t see Braydon Coburn in that shade at all. To me, he’s strictly a defensive defenseman, much like Adam Larsson, and that’s where I place the value.

Coburn makes $3.7M dollars this season and has an NMC in his deal. Both could be problematic unless Tampa would agree to eat some of that (like half) and waive the right to play for a Stanley Cup contender. The Oilers probably would need to send a contract over as well as we have to remember that Andrej Sekera will be back this season and his $5.5M will come back on to the books.

I like Coburn because he’s a throwback player but I don’t necessarily see him as a fit for the Oilers apart from their obsession with left-handed defenders and Coburn being a veteran on an expiring deal. They’re better off signing Garrison, no? He’s cheaper and probably hungrier and he’s got a bit more in his skill set than being a defensive defender with that shot of his.

But then again, when the going gets tough in the playoffs, you need the soldiers out there who are ready to make the necessary sacrifices.

As for Slater Koekkoek, he’s also left-handed but he’s 24 years old and hasn’t cemented his place in the NHL yet. There are a lot of question marks about his health (still) and spending 35 games in the press box last season is no way to announce to the league that you’re a valuable asset that can contribute in an impactful manner.

Carr Shopping

I got a message in my DMs that the Oilers are looking at claiming Daniel Carr. Now, I don’t know how reliable the person is that slid into me DMs to send that message but I’ll run with it not because it’s a bonified rumor but because I LOVE DANIEL CARR!

He’s local, he’s gritty, he plays the game the right way, he’s a water bug that’ll be a pain in the ass for the opposition, and he scores goals!

Last season Carr was up and down with the Habs. He scored 6 goals and 10 apples in 38 games with Montreal and 11 goals with 8 assists in 20 games for their farm club in Laval.

His GF%/60 (9.14) was right up there with Jordan Eberle’s and he played on a much worse team than the former Oiler with worse linemates…

He signed a deal with Vegas this summer for one year worth 750k. I guess George McPhee saw him as surplus to requirement after camp but if I were the Oilers I’d find a way to move Caggiula and get Carr in.
