Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors: Edmonton After Flames Defender?

I remember there being some talk about how the Oilers might have a quiet trade deadline, but for the life of me, they are getting connected to a lot of players this year. Mostly vets, mind you, but still. It’s really hard to believe that they’ll stand pat this season.

Today, we’re talking Fleury some more, Tanev, and The Fourth Period is saying that Oilers GM Ken Holland might be looking to beef up the bottom-six and suggests maybe Edmonton might be looking to make another Ekholm-like trade.

I should start prefacing these blogs with the fact that I write them a day in advance and because we’re getting so close to the deadline there’s a good chance I might write about a player or a team and it be old news by the time it gets to your beautiful eyes. If that happens, my apologies!

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors

Remember When Jacques Plante Suited Up for the Oilers Back in the Day?

“When it comes to goalies, Marc-Andre Fleury will have the biggest impact. He’s earned the right to call his shot; nothing happens without his approval… This screams Carolina, Colorado or Edmonton, all playoff-bound. But, in some of those situations, he wouldn’t be the starter, so that factors in.”

  • I don’t know, I talked about him the other day, I just don’t think Edmonton is going to have enough trade assets or cap space to get a deal for him done. In addition to that, I’m not really sure that netminding is a priority for them anymore.
Dealing with the Devil

“In the latest buzz surrounding the NHL trade market, the Edmonton Oilers are reportedly eyeing veteran defenseman Chris TanevTSN’s Darren Dreger revealed on OverDrive that the Oilers have shown considerable interest in Tanev, emphasizing the team’s eagerness to bolster its defensive core. While not labeled as front-runners, the Oilers join a growing list of teams expressing interest in the seasoned player. – NHL Trade Talk

  • He’s a UFA, so Edmonton’s not going to be paying a premium for Tanev. I imagine they might want to try and convince Craig Conroy to take on some young prospects who are close to NHL-ready and a contract like Brett Kulak.
  • My favorite part of the article this quote came from is this,
    • “Analysts agree that relying on Cody Ceci in the top four during the playoffs might not be an ideal scenario for the Oilers.”
  • While I don’t necessarily disagree with the point, relying on a guy who is being held together by duct tape and band-aids is a much better idea? Yikes.
  • Tanev also has some control over his destination with that M-NTC on his deal. My guess is that he goes to Vancouver, Colorado, Dallas, or Boston. Maybe the Jets if they come in with something tempting. I know Ottawa wants him bad but why would he agree to go there right now when he can try for a Cup and they sign with the Sens in the off-season.
  • Jaycob Megna (CHI) and Sean Walker (PHI), in my opinion, would be better investments for the Oilers if they’re so hell-bent on upgrading on Ceci and Kulak.
Adding Functional Toughness and Size

“I think, I think, in terms of goaltending. I think that the focus has shifted a little bit more towards bringing in a mid-six guy and even the blue line and further upgrading the blue line.”

“Kenny Holland is looking at different options up front, can you further deepen this roster in your mid to lower six even after the Corey Perry addition? And what about the blue line? Can you get another physical type of presence? Like the Ekholm move that they last season?”

“You look at Montreal. Is it a David Savard, who has one year left on his contract that has a reasonable cap hit.” – David Pagnotta, The Fourth Period

  • I don’t know if Edmonton goes after a Savard-type, to be honest. Is he better than Ceci? A debate probably could be had. But they’ve got 6’5″ 235lb+ right-shot Johnathan Kovacevic sitting there and he makes minimum wage plus he’s got another year on his deal.
  • Pat Maroon, even after having back surgery, makes sense to me if you’re adding some functional beef to the bottom-six. He’s also on a cheap deal and it expires at season’s end.
  • In terms of another Ekholm deal, they’d have to land Colton Parayko (STL) or John Carlson (WAS) for it to equal the shock factor.

Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors: Could the Oilers Bring in an Ex-Teammate of Corey Perry?

Today, we’re taking blurbs from Elliotte Friedman’s 32 Thoughts blog on Sportsnet. We’ll be talking about the latest “trend” amongst GMs going into the March 8th deadline and I’ve got some concerns regarding one name that keeps coming up in connection to the Edmonton Oilers. Also, there’s a future hall-of-famer that used to play with Corey Perry that Ken Holland might have his eyes on… Who could it be? Read on to find out!

Late First Rounders All the Rage?

“One trend gaining traction is teams destined to pick later in the first round aren’t married to their picks. Vancouver and Winnipeg already moved them. Sportsnet draft gurus Jason Bukala and Sam Cosentino see a drop, and several organizations agree with them.”

  • How is this a trend that is “gaining traction”? This happens every year… Edmonton will probably deal theirs too. More on that below!
More Walker to the Oilers Talk

“Philadelphia can extend Travis Konecny on July 1, but the Flyers are trying to get the legwork done sooner. You’re going to see a real attempt at this. The prediction is Nick Seeler stays, and Jamie Drysdale’s arrival puts Sean Walker on the move (Edmonton and Tampa Bay are among interested parties). Rasmus Ristolainen’s stock is up, but the contract is tricky.”

  • It’s a real kick in the nuts deciding what to do with this defense on Edmonton, eh? I mean, it’s flipped the switch and become quite good. So, do you want to muck around with that right now?
  • That’s why I wonder about Desharnais. He partners with Ekholm on the PK and hardly plays with Nurse, ever. If Holland is dealing Ceci, is the new guy coming in to replace him? Could be risky…
  • That said, I am of the belief that Nurse does need a better partner. Is that guy Sean Walker? I can’t tell you that. Maybe it’s Colton Parayko. Maybe it’s Evan Bouchard. Maybe it is Vinnie Desharnais. What I can tell you is that we’re unlikely to find out anytime soon.
  • Imagine if Holland traded for Ristolainen and really f*cked with everybody. lol. Campbell for Risto, who says no? C’mon! You don’t think the big Finn could have a resurgence in Edmonton? 😉
Who’s Up for Some Flower Power?

“This afternoon a new piece of information from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Minnesota Wild are open to trading Marc-Andre Fleury. If the Wild do end up parting ways with Fleury, Friedman says that the Edmonton Oilers are a team to watch out for..” – Hawks Insider

“Earlier this week, insider Frank Seravalli also connected the Oilers to be interesting in Fleury as a backup or tandem goalie. He reported there’s a good chance Fleury is traded to a contender in likely his last year, and he could be moved for as little as a third round draft pick.” – Oilers Daily

  • Yeah, those sources aren’t the most reliable but I have heard Seravalli talk about Fleury on Oilers Now! So I’m just going to go with this one. Bear with me.
  • I thought MAF had no intentions of playing for the Oilers. I mean, weren’t they hot for him last year and struck out?
  • Now, there’s a bit of a conundrum here for Edmonton acquiring the future HOFer. What do they do with Pickard. From what I’ve been told, he’s really loved in that dressing room and I don’t think it’d be well received if Holland lost him either in a trade or on waivers.
  • But, what do you do with him if MAF is acquired? I guess they could keep three goalies but it’d handcuff them a bit roster-wise. How often do you see a club bring in a netminder and keep all three on the main roster?
  • I think the other thing is his contract prevents the club from doing a whole lot more unless they can get a third team involved and burn even more of their futures for this year’s run.
  • Honestly, I think the Avs are going to get him. Georgiev has been okay, Francouz can’t stay healthy, and Annunen is way to young. Fleury would fit like a glove on that roster.

Edmonton Oilers Rumors: “He would FOR SURE waive his NTC to go play in Edmonton.”

This morning on Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer had Georges Laraque on his show, and right off the bat, Bob got into the topic of upgrading the Edmonton Oilers goaltending with the former NHL enforcer. This is how the conversation went,

BS: Do you think a player like Marc-Andre Fleury potentially would look at Edmonton down the road?

GL: First of all, I can say that Marc-Andre Fleury would be an upgrade to both goalies that are in Edmonton. That’s a start and he would for sure waive his no-trade clause to go play in Edmonton because you know that playing there gives him a chance to win. It’s not just that, I know him, he’s a competitor, he’s one of the hardest working goalies I’ve ever seen.

The way Vegas is treating him is not fair at all. They have not talked to him, no communication ever since they signed Lehner. They didn’t even communicate with him to tell him that he’d start the season with Lehner because Lehner got injured. He found all that out in the media. The team didn’t even call him.

So, how much do you think he’d love to go play on a team like Edmonton, that plays Vegas a lot, to be able to prove them wrong. That’s how athletes are made. That’s how athletes are bred. The best think you want to do is show them they made the wrong decision by choosing Lehner instead of him. So playing them would give him that opportunity.

Laraque, later on, said that he’s crossing his fingers that when Robin Lehner comes back and Vegas needs to shed salary that they deal him to Edmonton.

In the past, there’s been a feeling that the Golden Knights wouldn’t trade within its division but yesterday the team’s owner let it be known that there will be a Canadian division next season. Hence why they traded defenseman Nate Schmidt to Vancouver. So I wouldn’t immediately dismiss the Oilers and Golden Knights doing business in the future. Even if it’s not a trade for Fleury but someone else.

What do you think about Georges’ comments here? Do you think that Fleury is an upgrade over Koskinen and Smith? What do you think this kind of trade would look like?
