Edmonton Oilers: Four Training Camp Thoughts + Possible Alternate Jersey Leak

The Edmonton Oilers will play their first pre-season game versus the Winnipeg Jets tomorrow night and I’d have to say things have been interesting in camp this year so far. We’ve got a couple of veterans who’ve yet to make an appearance in Kris Russell (concussion) and Mike Smith (flu) and some who’ve had lots of exposure but haven’t taken the bull by the horns yet.

1. Cooper Marody

The annual Joey Moss Cup went this evening and it was a landslide 7-1 win for Team White over Team Blue, here were the rosters:

Team Blue: G: Wells, S. Starrett D: Persson, Bear, Jones, Lagesson, Kulevich: F: Malone, Peluso, Currie, Gambardella, B. Starrett, Esposito, Safin, Marody, Maksimov, Jurco

Team White: G: Rodrigue, Skinner D: Manning, Lowe, Desharnais, Bouchard, Samorukov, Day F: Nygard, Cave, Hebig, Benson, P. Russell, Lavoie, Vesey, McLeod, Haas

I wasn’t at the game for obvious reasons, so I’m left making judgments on it via the information I can gather from social media and once again, the lack of positive reports on Cooper Marody after a summer of hype is concerning, but not a surprise to this writer. There wasn’t even a mention of him in Bruce McCurdy’s review of the game

In two rookie games and an intra-squad scrimmage (without the team’s top players involved no less), he’s found a way to become irrelevant.

How long can we give him the benefit of the doubt here? He was asked about his skating by Jason Gregor in an interview not too long ago and he brushed it off like it was nothing.

“For me, I don’t see that being an issue. There are a lot of players in the NHL that fly around the ice, but I’m more of a thinker and there is no wasted strides, no wasted movements. I know the NHL is another step but you can’t point to one time where my speed or quickness has prevented me from making a play, or getting to a puck, or winning a battle in the American League all year.”

I could probably point to a couple of times in those rookie games where his lack of speed and quickness prevented him from making a play. And that game was full of junior players and minor leaguers…

Lots of talk, but not a lot of walk to date.

The sentiment I got was that he thinks he knows better than the scouts and coaching staff. I don’t care how good his hands are or if he can see the play five steps ahead of his opponents, his lack of explosiveness and quickness is what will keep him on the outside looking in.

Cameron Hebig has outplayed Marody (and a few others) so far and it’s not even close. Maybe another year in the minors will help adjust Cooper’s attitude a little there.

2. Lavoie and Rodrigue Cut Early

Don’t read into these young men getting sent back to Junior early. Every team is doing it and it’s for the best. They had a very low chance of making the club and they’re better off joining their QMJHL teams as they head into the preseason.

Lavoie showed glimpses of what made him a highly-regarded player going into the 2019 NHL entry draft, but he also showed his age and inexperience. Personally, I think he’s looking forward to at least one or two seasons in the AHL after completing his Junior career.

Rodrigue had an outstanding rookie game versus the Flames (sans the early goal he let in) but his team in Moncton requires his services more than the Oilers. I’ll be interested to see how he does this year as he’s one of the front-runner’s for Team Canada’s starting goalie at the World Juniors in the Czech Republic this year.

3. Speed Kills

From all accounts, the speed and quickness of European signings Joakim Nygard and Gaetan Haas is standing out. Check out the scrimmage highlights above and you’ll notice at the beginning a goal where fellow SHL-signing Joel Persson tries to seal Nygard along the boards, but the speedy Swede slips by and subsequently sets up Cameron Hebig for a goal while Haas takes the defender with him to the net. A lovely play!

One of the things I’ve been wondering since more information has been released regarding these Euro signings is if there’s a possibility we might see them in the top-6 in Edmonton at some point. Haas has the size, the speed/quickness, the hands, he shoots right… Then there’s Nygard who is a grittier version of Carl Hagelin.

All I know is that youngsters like Tyler Benson and Cooper Marody are competing with Haas and Nygard for a spot on this roster. To me, the kids are losing the battle… So far.

4. Evan Bouchard vs. Everyone?

Are we really looking at the Oilers possibly starting the season with a 20-year-old on their blueline? Evan Bouchard has been fantastic so far and it’s really hard to ignore that. Four points in a scrimmage is a lot for a forward let alone a defender.

It sounds like Joel Persson is still adjusting to the ice in North America. He’s getting tons of reps to get him acclimated quickly and I’m not sure if that’s a good sign or a bad one. Even if he does need a bit of time in Bakersfield, the Oilers have the players to cover for him.

From McCurdy’s recounting of the scrimmage, it sounds like Caleb Jones, Ethan Bear, and William Lagesson still need to pick it up a notch.

Could all four be sent to the AHL and Bouchard start the year in Edmonton? I’m very leery of that tactic and it doesn’t sound like one Oilers GM Ken Holland would use. That said, he did use 20-year-old Dennis Cholowski for 52 games last season.

I say, send him to Bakersfield regardless. I don’t imagine these performances will continue against NHL competition and he’s got some work to do on his defensive game. Coach Tippett said that he’s still got some “Junior habits” in his game that need working out. He mentioned that Bouchard and Dmitri Samorukov played so much in Junior that they rested on the ice at times and in the NHL you can’t do that.

It’d be fairer to guys like Ethan Bear, Caleb Jones, or William Lagesson to keep them up instead. We’ve also got fan-favorite Brandon Manning sitting there and who knows what Holland or Dave Tippett has in store for him.

An Alternate Jersey Prototype Leaked?

Do you remember that CCM commercial with Brent Burns and Connor McDavid not too long ago where they were having a shooting competition and they’d give each other cheeky prizes to whoever won? Well, I think I might’ve found something very interesting in the video and I’m surprised nobody else did or maybe they did find it but I didn’t read anything on it.

Look at the uniform that the teddy bear is wearing. I don’t have any confirmation on this, it’s just a hunch on my part, but I believe that could’ve been an alternate jersey the Oilers were looking at using as the colors and the scheme match up with the orange ones they use today. It also matches that of the uniform their AHL affiliate uses.

My feeling is that there’s a strong possibility that we’ll see the uniform that Brent Burns’ teddy bear is wearing at some point in the future. I mean, that’s the jersey they should’ve come out with this year if not a throwback uniform like other teams in the Pacific division are using.

Or maybe this observation is nothing at all and that’s a fakey up there or this is old news…

Just before I go, Jesse Puljujarvi scored a goal and an assist in his second SM-Liiga match of the year. He’s got 12 shots on goal in those two games and is averaging over 15 minutes per game of ice time.

Between the Finnish league and the Champions Hockey League, he’s got 3 goals and 3 assists and 35 shots on goal. A point-per-game player in Europe is the least we could ask for and he’s delivering! Go Yessa Go!

Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Were the Oilers in on Sissons? Plus @TPEHockey’s 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase Preview

Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland has done a masterful job and undoing the handy work left by former general manager Peter Chiarelli. The bottom six forwards are deeper than they’ve ever been, the goaltending tandem is of NHL caliber, and the Oilers top-6 has the potential to be one of the most dangerous in the league just as long as James Neal’s season last year was an “outlier” as TSN1260’s Jason Gregor is calling it.

It’s really hard to refute Holland’s performances to date, I mean, a week ago everyone was up his ass giving him failing grades for the Oilers off-season so far and then he found a way to do the unthinkable by dealing Milan Lucic’s contract. I reckon some folks just don’t have the patience to see things through these days… The summer is long when there’s no hockey to watch.

I’ll go back to what I’ve said previously, Ken Holland is simply reversing some of Chiarelli’s mistakes.

  • Drake Caggiula out, Josh Archibald in.
  • Jordan Eberle out, James Neal in.
  • Ryan Strome out…

And so here we are waiting to see who Mr. Holland is going to bring in to replace Ryan Strome and on that note, I was passed this message a couple of days ago but life got in the way of getting a post out at the time.

“Keep an eye on 98. It sounds like a there’s a team from a small hockey market in the states, who just moved a major piece off their blueline, that has their eye on him.”

I’m under the impression that before he re-upped with his team, the Oilers were in on Nashville’s most recent RFA signing, Colton Sissons. Considering the message from my source above, a trade to acquire him (and perhaps more) might’ve included Jesse Puljujarvi and possibly a defenseman, my guess that defender might’ve been Matt Benning but I’ve got nothing substantial on that. It’s just a hunch given how he’s been in the rumor mill for some time and that the Oilers have guys like Joel Persson and Ethan Bear coming not to mention Evan Bouchard at some point as well. Bob Stauffer sort of spoke to that a couple of days ago on his show,

“Maybe the way to go might be to get a prospect from another organization that’s looking for traction/chance to breakthrough as well. I wonder if you’d consider doing that with an organization that’s maybe short of 45 contracts. Maybe there’s a guy you’d like to get off your 50-man list and maybe no money-wise but maybe just to create a bit more flexibility moving forward.”

I asked around about a possible Eeli Tolvanen exchange and was told: “No way that happens.”

Personally, I can’t really see that deal having made sense from NSH’s point-of-view. They are stacked on the wings and they have seven NHL defenders ready to go, so why add another winger and dman? So anybody reading this might chalk it up to hearsay, but then I think we could politely remind ourselves of the trade Calgary just made to acquire Milan Lucic and how that didn’t really make much sense to their team either…

The one last thing that makes me wonder about a Puljujarvi to Nashville is their coach. Would Peter Laviolette have time for Jesse? I mean, of all the teams, the Preds are really laden with vets and maybe that’d be the perfect place for Pulju. Also, he’d be closer to his best friends in Carolina (Sebastien Aho) and Dallas (Roope Hintz).

Trades happen for a plethora of reasons and they don’t always make sense. Sometimes perfectly reasonable trades don’t happen too. It’s just how NHL hockey works sometimes.

TPE Hockey’s 2019/20 WORLD JUNIOR SUMMER SHOWCASE PREVIEW

The World Junior Summer Showcase (WJSS) is an off-season showcase to give an idea of who could be on the roster come the World Juniors at New Years. Sweden and Finland each field a roster of their best U20 players while Canada and the US roster two different teams. The showcase isn’t a tournament so the teams don’t compete for anything, although the players are competing for a roster spot at the real World Juniors.

The competition is set to begin on July 26th and run until August 3rd in Plymouth, Michigan according to www.teamusa.usahockey.com

Canada

Canada’s team will be highlighted by the consensus #1 pick for the 2020 draft in Alexis Lafreniére. He’s expected to put on a show and display why he will go 1st next summer. Two other 2020 prospects in Justin Barron and Braden Schneider will also appear on Team Canada on their blueline. Both are projected 1st rounders. Speaking of the blueline, Bowen Byram and Noah Dobson will be their top players. For forwards expect Joe Veleno, Alex Newhook, Barret Hayton, and Kirby Dach to dominate. In net, Edmonton’s Olivier Rodrigue is the Team’s go-to-guy.

USA

The Americans, unfortunately, don’t feature any 2020 prospects due to a weak year from the US. Nonetheless, this team is very good. The 2019 draft class featured a ton of American talent. Obviously, Jack Hughes won’t attend, but Alex Turcotte, Trevor Zegras, Cam York, Cole Caufield, and Spencer Knight will all be there. This team is stacked with great players. Even when divided into two squads the Americans will be the best at this showcase.

Finland

After last year’s WJC victory the Finns are in a rebuild of sorts. Without Kaapo Kakko the team isn’t great. Anton Lundell will be very fun to watch as he’s a top 5 prospect for the 2020 draft. He’s coming off a strong performance as a draft minus one player at last year’s WJC. Finland will look to their top 2019 picks in Patrik Puistola, Ville Heinola, Mikko Kokkonen, and Anttoni Honka. In net, they’ll play Justus Annunen, but with Ukko-Pekka Luukonen gone their goalie crop is weak.

Sweden

If you’re looking for an exciting team, look to Sweden. With two electrifying 2020, top 10 picks in Lucas Raymond and Alex Holtz you don’t want to miss a single one of their games. Aside from those two the Swedes still poses some fun, fun players. Jonatan Berggren, Nils Höglander, Sam Fagemo, Victor Söderström, Toby Björnfot, and Philip Broberg are all can’t miss players.

Genius Chiarelli Scores Big for the Oilers at the Draft Again!

Click the pic above to check out our merch!

Well, here we are again Oilers fans. The draft is complete and for the 4th year in a row, we are rolling in quality prospects. Peter Chiarelli decision to overhaul the amateur scouting staff is looking better and better every day. Keith Gretzky and Bob Green are working together masterfully to rebuild the Oilers’ pipeline after the old boys used it for their golden toilets.

Do you know how I know that Chiarelli had an amazing draft? Even the staunchest of Anti-Chiarelli fans were happy…

Quick and dirty player reviews! Let’s go!

Evan Bouchard – Future top-pairing stud and the search is over for a top-4 bomb-dropping PP quarterback.

Ryan McLeod – Speed to kill with a devious shot.

Olivier Rodrigue – Best NA goalie in the draft, how can you go wrong?

Michael Kesselring – Closest he might get to the NHL is by holding a picture of Kessel’s ring.

Patrik Siikanen – Hopefully a Finnish Maksimov?

EXTENDED PLAYER REVIEWS

But in all seriousness, those top three picks are outstanding. Near Genius level player selecting. Evan Bouchard may very well play next in the NHL next season but I hope not. I hate the idea of adding another teenager to the team, a defenseman no less. The problem is he’s got nothing left to prove at the OHL level and he’s too young to go to the AHL. Without a defenseman currently on the roster being traded, there’s not a lot of room on the playing roster either. So here’s to hoping that he gets a good long look but is leading Team Canada to gold during Christmas. He can always come back at the end of the season if London’s season is over.

Personally, I don’t think the Oilers are done making a move for a right-handed dman. I think they’d like to move on from Sekera’s contract and add another righty on the blueline for at least a season as a stop-gap until Bouchard is ready next season. I think Mike Green would be a fine candidate to fill that role but I don’t have the slightest idea if he’d accept a one year contract at his age nor do I know what he’d be willing to play for. Would the Oilers even have the cap to sign a player like him and is it even in their plans given they signed Joel Persson then immediately loaned him back to his SHL club?

Drafting Ryan McLeod gives the Oilers a start on working on the pipeline’s depth down the middle but what a start it is. I think he looks like a faster Ryan Strome but left-handed. Add him to Marody, Hebig, Vesel, Gambardella, and Rasanen as players that have a decent to good chance at becoming NHLers.

Olivier Rodrigue is the son of one of the Oilers goalie coaches but there’s no sense in holding that against him. He was also Central Scoutings top-rated goalie in North America. Chiarelli has certainly worked hard to make the Oilers pipeline deep in net, eh? Skinner, Wells, Ellis (RFA), Hawkey, and Starrett are going to be competing for 2 spots in the AHL (possibly versus Al Montoya) and the ECHL next season and I’m dying to see which one is the odd man out and what happens to him. Surely Rodrigue will be there in a few years.

I’ve got nothing on Kesselring or Siikanen nor do I feel like they are legitimate NHL Prospects. I’m not sure what the Oilers scouts see in these guys.  Maybe they drafted them with eyes on other players they might be playing with in the future. I mean it’s not every day that the Oilers draft a kid out of the Finnish junior division.

A wise man one said, “Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don’t make.”

Hopefully, Chiarelli stands pat here and keeps doing what he’s doing because it’s working.
