BLH’s Trade Rumors and Ramblings: Puljujarvi, Sens Looking for Dman, and What’s going on with Kyle Turris?

Will the Oilers be Forced to Lose the Puljujarvi Trade?

Jonathan Willis has a post up at The Athletic regarding Edmonton’s disgruntled Finnish winger Jesse Puljujarvi where he outlines why there’s only one team in the NHL that will be able to take advantage of a Puljujarvi trade, that being the team that acquires him. He’s of the opinion that the Karpat winger is worth as little as a 2nd rounder or “a little more” and the team acquiring Puljujarvi will be getting a player who should be ready for NHL deployment in one season, not three or four like a player drafted this summer would generally be. BLH’s Thoughts: If you don’t know, I’m a huge fan of Puljujarvi and it’s my hope that he sees the light and returns to Edmonton someday, but I don’t think that’ll ever happen. My feeling is that he won’t be traded until the draft unless somebody ponies up big to trade for him in the next week. The Oilers have a plethora of contracts coming off of the books and could use that as leverage to trade Puljujarvi for an established winger whose contract might be causing issues for his current team. Maybe that’s a team like Arizona who will be gummed up going into 2020/21. Maybe they could use Puljujarvi and trade for Marian Hossa’s contract in addition to a massive sweetener like a first-round pick or a young player like Christian Dvorak.

Sens Blueline Could Use Addition

Bruce Garrioch is reporting that injuries are taking a toll on the Ottawa Senators defense and they are in the market to add a dman. They’ve called up Max Lajoie and Christian Jaros to cover for Christian Wolanin (shoulder), Andreas Englund (lower-body), Erik Brannstrom (hand), and Cody Goloubef (undisclosed).

BLH’s Thoughts: The Buffalo Sabres are looking to move a defender. Maybe there’s a fit there? Elliotte Friedman has said that Marco Scandella’s name is being bandied about.

What is Nashville Doing with Kyle Turris?

Preds center Kyle Turris has been a regular attendant to Nashville’s press box lately and there’s a trade coming shortly. There doesn’t seem to be a fit for the former Ottawa Senator with the Predators. (source)

BLH’s Thoughts: I’ve heard through a source that Turris isn’t the easiest guy to be teammates with. Take that for what it’s worth but if it’s true, that could be a factor in why he’s not playing and why the Predators are trying their damnedest to get him out of Nashville. I wonder if Calgary would try to work out a deal with him?

Quick Hits

  • The Habs are hoarding their cap space and the speculation is that they are indeed going to swing for the fences this season. (source)
  • Sounds like Tyson Barrie was that close to asking for a trade out of Toronto, but things have calmed down since the firing of Mike Babcock. The word going around now is that they’re going to try and address their issues in net by targeting Tristan Jarry of the Pittsburgh Penguins. (source)
  • Elliotte Friedman said on Oilers Now last Friday that the Canucks have been looking to move on of their “forwards” for a year now, but the offers haven’t been satisfactory. (source)
  • The Capitals are going to have to make a decision on some players as those that are on the IR or suspension will be back sooner than later. Richard Panik is a candidate to be moved as is Nick Jensen. (source)

Just one minor rant before getting into this weeks 31 Thoughts podcast and what Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman were saying about the Oilers.

All throughout the Taylor Hall era of the Oilers (or as others call it, the Decade of Darkness), I watched those teams get pushed around and nothing was done about it even though the team had tough guys/enforcers on the roster and you might say I’m old-fashioned or a flat-earther because I believe in physical retribution but the NHL’s star attraction was the target of cheap shots from the Calgary Flames and the San Jose Sharks most recently.

**Bloggers and fans will scoff at what I’m going to say next but journalists who cover sports teams and ex-players won’t. They know exactly what I’m talking about.

Now we’ve learned over time that there was a split in the dressing room back then and the players weren’t willing to stick up for each other because of the cliques that were formed in that room. Is that what is going on now?**

What are Zack Kassian, Milan Lucic, Darnell Nurse, and JJ Khaira doing?

I’ll give credit to Khaira and Nurse because at least they gone ahead and dropped the gloves in the last 10 days but what kind of excuses do Kassian and Lucic have?

My whole thing with these kinds of players is that they have something to offer when they’re not scoring goals, their braveness and willingness to do the things that others are not. I mean if this is the way the NHL is going, then all of those players who say they’ll battle for their teammates and don’t, they can hit the road. I’d rather the Oilers sign a bunch of rat finks like Burrows or Clutterbuck if that’s the case. Hell, bring back Raffi Torres!

I don’t see anybody hitting out there anymore or if they do it’s a glance or a coasting into a player as if they’re sorry for touching the guy. What happened to these players? Are they playing through something? If so, why haven’t they had it repaired if they’ve been playing through it for the entire season?

If Lucic and Kassian can’t play the game that made them successful in Edmonton, then they should be moved out for players who can. Michael Haley does nothing but hit and fight and he’s not hurting the Florida Panthers in their fight for a playoff spot. He’s cheap too.

Listen, all I want is some fire and emotion during the games and this isn’t an Oilers-centric problem I don’t believe. I think it’s league-wide and that’s a shame because if this is the direction the NHL is going, I’ll probably stop watching it at some point and convert to junior games or minor league games where things are a bit more unpredictable.

31 THOUGHTS PODCAST: RNH OR KLEFBOM?

https://twitter.com/NHLbyMatty/status/974074726141210624

This is going to be a story until the draft, no doubt about it. That being said, Oilers fans shouldn’t be getting their hopes up because the Senators were talking to both the Flames and the Sharks at the deadline regarding Mike Hoffman and Bobby Ryan. I think we can toss Vegas into that mix too.

On this week’s 31 Thoughts podcast, Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman had some interesting comments regarding RNH and Klefbom…

Marek: Who is most likely to go out of Edmonton, Klefbom or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins?

Friedman: It’s a tough one because both players play valuable positions. One’s a center and one’s a D, what is everyone looking for? Center and D.

I think they both have an attractiveness about them.

The only reason I’d say Klefbom more likely is that I think if you look at them they’ve got Nurse, they’ve got Sekera, they’ve got Larsson, they’ve got Russell signed. I think they feel they’ve probably got enough D that they can get by.

Marek: It’s a D heavy draft, they’ll take a D most likely.

Friedman: If they can get Draisaitl and McDavid comfortable playing apart, you probably don’t have the luxury of keeping Nugent-Hopkins’ cap number but if you really want to play them together, you probably need Nugent-Hopkins.

Like, I think they have to convince those two guys (McDavid/Draisaitl) to play apart. I really do. You look at Pittsburgh, the team we watched in Toronto on the weekend, why do they win Stanley Cups? Because they’ve got Crosby on one line, Malkin on one line, and Kessel on another line with Brassard.

I think ultimately those two guys (97/29) are going to have to play apart and for that reason, Nugent-Hopkins might not be a luxury you can afford under the cap?

So what I’m gathering from that is if the Oilers keep Todd Mclellan, there’s a possibility that he finds himself back up on that top line with Connor McDavid more often than not. Something Ryan Rishaug has spoken to this week on the Jason Gregor show. And in turn that’ll mean Klefbom goes because the Oilers will need RNH to man the 2nd line centre position.

But if the Oilers decide to go with a different coach I believe that will spell the end of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ spell with the Oilers because Peter Chiarelli believes having RNH on the 3rd line making $6M a year isn’t fiscally smart.

And another thing we have to take into consideration is the draft?

Right now the Oilers are sitting in 7th spot and their chances at the 1st overall pick are 6.7%. They’re chances at a top 3 selection are 20.9%. (according to tankathon.com)

So if they win the lottery and move up to no.1, they’ll take Dahlin and that means goodbye Oscar. If they move up into the top 3 but not no.1, that means they’ll be taking a winger, goodbye RNH. If they stay where they are at no.7, I would venture to guess they trade the pick outright in a deal for a winger or a dman OR they trade down because the middle of the pack in this year’s draft doesn’t offer much separation in terms of talent.

Lastly, they could sit on the roster and do nothing because RNH and Klefbom are still great young players and they’re signed long-term. They’ll both be healthy going into next year and really, all the Oilers need to do is tinker a bit on the wing and back end.

Don’t Freak Out When…

So thefourthperiod.com has pulled a couple of pretty prominent names out of the Oilers hat and tossed them into their trade rumors. Those names being:

  • Oscar Klefbom
  • Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

This is what they had to say about those players:

As we reported earlier this afternoon, the Edmonton Oilers are willing to take calls on defenceman Oscar Klefbom, but only if it means bringing in a top-winger that can play alongside Connor McDavid.

The Oilers want to add speed to their lineup and lack a few wingers who can keep up with the likes of McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Klefbom isn’t actively being shopped, but Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli isn’t hanging up the phone. According to multiple well-placed league sources, discussions have already taken place, though nothing is imminent.

I assume by keeping up with Connor and Leon that they’re talking about hockey IQ because I’m not 100% sure if it’s absolutely necessary the wingers who play with either need to be barn burners.

Now if the discussions have already taken place, that could mean anything. That could mean that Chiarelli talked to a GM about Oscar two years ago.

In addition to Klefbom, injured centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ name is popping up again. He’s expected to be out until the end of the month, or early March, but word on the street suggests he may be ahead of schedule.

Nugent-Hopkins has generated plenty of interest from a number of teams, including the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets, but he’s not going anywhere unless the Oilers can swap him out for a top-line winger or a top mobile defenceman.

So this isn’t really new news either. RNH has been on the block since the summer Hall was traded. If you think Hall was the first guy being offered out for Larsson or any other dman that summer, you’re sadly mistaken. Add to that the rumors that had Nuge connected to Tyson Barrie and Matt Dumba and you shouldn’t be surprised that his name is creeping up into the trade rumors as the deadline approaches.

I do agree, however, with the author here though. Unless it’s a top pairing (not Adam Larsson top pairing) dman or a LWer, with youth or term cheaper than RNH, the Oilers aren’t moving him. The GM and coach love having him on the team and rely on him a lot.

With the Ottawa Senators dangling sniper Mike Hoffman, could a Klefbom swap work for both clubs? Edmonton’s been disappointed in Klefbom’s play this season, so it’s entirely possible – unless they’re trying to aim higher.

I also wonder if the Oilers kick the tires on Arizona Coyotes star blueliner Oliver Ekman-Larsson, though Arizona may wait until the off-season to know if they’re drafting first-overall or not before deciding what route to take with OEL.

Hoffman is a guy I’ve wanted on the Oilers for quite some time now and a Klefbom for Hoffman deal could be one that I could get on board with but is it one that fits for the Senators right now? They’ve got Phaneuf they’re trying to trade (good luck!), Ceci is up for contract renewal, the Erik Karlsson drama is still unfolding, and Thomas Chabot is rounding into a solid NHLer.

I did toss out there the idea of trading both Ryan Nugent-Hopkins AND Oscar Klefbom for Oliver Ekman-Larsson recently though. I mean is there a team that could offer the Coyotes something better than a 1st line center and a top pairing defenseman?
