(11/25/2020) BLH Trade Rumors and NHL Speculation feat. the Canadiens, Blue Jackets, Flames, and Golden Knights

Coming from an Edmonton Oilers fan’s perspective, BLH comments on the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation featuring Johnny Gaudreau, Phillip Danault, a few cases of NHL and national junior teams getting hit by COVID-19, and more!

What are the pundits in Edmonton saying about their new signing? Check that out here.

Do you know the story about the man who saved the Edmonton Oilers? Watch it here!

These three players will be Edmonton’s breakout kids in 2020-21! Read it now!

  • Eric Engels (Sportsnet): “I’ll be at camp. The Canadiens gave me a three-year contract (worth $9.24 million) two years ago, and I still have a year to play with the Canadiens,” Danault said. “After that, we’ll see. I really have the intention of honouring my contract and then, after that, we’ll see what the future holds.”

BLH’s Thoughts: I wish the Oilers had thought of moving RNH up to the wing earlier and went for Phil Danault as their 3C. He’s an elite two-way center now and the Habs have a wonderful problem on their hands. Do they pay the man and trade out one of Nick Suzuki or Jesperi Kotkaniemi OR do they trade Danault and stick with the two kids down the middle?

  • Hockey Canada: “Hockey Canada confirmed earlier today that two players at Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp have tested positive for COVID-19, and have been placed in quarantine at the team hotel in Red Deer.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Tough break. You knew as soon as the coaches tested positive that it was only a matter of time before some players did as well. We’re a month away from the World Juniors getting started and the team is supposed to be playing exhibition games and making cuts. I think it’s safe to say that this little setback is going to offer up some unique challenges to that process.

  • Frank Seravalli (TSN): The Columbus Blue Jackets and Vegas Golden Knights had a number of players test positive for COVID-19 recently. Subsequently, both clubs’ training facilities have been shut down.

BLH’s Thoughts: This is only the tip of the iceberg. More teams will make announcements and I read recently that Shane Doan is holding a camp of sorts down in Arizona and the best players in the league are participating in it. Players like Jonathan Toews, Auston Matthews, and Connor McDavid to name a few.

Is it just me or wouldn’t it be a bit safer to avoid traveling in North America all-together right now?

  • Joe Haggerty (Boston Hockey NOW): “It may be that the Bruins simply can’t afford Mike Hoffman even on a one-year contract given their cap constraints. If that turns out to be the case, I wouldn’t hate the Bruins taking a flier on Anthony Duclair at all. He’s a player that will be cheap this offseason and could have a high upside as a goal-scoring wing after his excellent rebound season in Ottawa last year.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Well, if it’s not Hoffman, it’s Duclair and if it’s not Duclair, it’s Mikael Granlund or Andreas Athanasiou (who’s looking more likely to be suiting up for a European club than an NHL one)… Slow news days means everything gets considered.

  • Lyle Fitzsimmons (Bleacher Report): “We’ll suggest Gaudreau and his $6.75 million salary heads to Buffalo in a swap that sends 26-year-old defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen ($5.4 million) and perhaps an additional contract or two to Alberta that will help augment a blue-line deficient Flames roster.”
    • Scottie Upshall (Missin’ Curfew Podcast: Johnny Gaudreau could don the black and orange for a package including winger Jakub Voracek and defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, along with a prospect.

BLH’s Thoughts: Not a bad couple of suggestions. Can I assume that the Sabres wouldn’t be signing Taylor Hall long-term in this scenario? I’m not sure I’ve seen a club tie up $23M in left-wingers before.

New Jersey is my bet. Not only because it’s his hometown, but they have the assets and room to bring him in. That said, they need to do something with their defence before augmenting their forward group. Hughes and Hischier will be fine throwing the club on their back and braving it as the team grows.

2019/20 Edmonton Oilers: #Operation19W Starts Now!

Day one is in the books and #Operation19W is fully underway! Everybody in the main camp was on the ice except for Caleb Jones this time around as he was deemed “unfit to play”. That said, Caleb will be back shortly!

Right now, it’s game time and there’s no better feeling in the world that when NHL hockey gets started again. I’m so bloody stoked to get this tournament going!!! This is going to be a mess of a blog, isn’t it? My pre-emptive apologies to all who make it past this point.

Oilers Talk

Anyways, let’s talk about the Oilers. Here are the latest line combos courtesy of my favorite play-by-play man in hockey today (how good does it feel to get daily roster updates again?),

Glad to see the Colby Cave tribute up there on the screen. #WeSkateForColby

That roster is about as deep as it’s ever been. Maybe as deep as the run of ’06. The fact that the team has SIX functional forward lines and FOUR d-pairings that they could throw out is a very good sign that this club is trending upwards and I think it’s going to do some damage during these 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Only one team scares me a bit and that is the St. Louis Blues. The Oilers can beat every other team in the Western Conference without question in my mind.

The only surprise (kind of) that I noticed within those line combos is Petr Klima~ er I mean, Andreas Athanasiou getting slotted alongside Leon Draisaitl and Kailer Yamamoto. From my perspective, this is the right place to put AA. His speed in addition to Leon’s pin-point passing ability could cause absolute havoc against opposing defenses and throwing RNH up with McDavid and Kassian will give the Hawks fits. That line also needs some defensive conscience if Chicago is planning on matching up Toews’ line with 97’s.

No Shaw or Crawford For the Blackhawks

Andrew Shaw has opted out and according to the reporting of The Athletic’s Mark Lazerus, it doesn’t sound like Corey Crawford will be back anytime soon. Leaving the Hawks with a better than average chance at being one of the first teams to qualify for the Alexis Lafreniere sweepstakes.

I hope everything is okay with Crawford and respect to Shaw for bowing out for health reasons. With that in mind, the odds have swayed Edmonton’s way massively. Shaw would’ve been a royal pain in the ass for the Oilers and Crawford has been Chicago’s saving grace against the Oilers all season.

How is Alexander Nylander on the 2nd line and Kubalik on the third? Yikes…

So, my feeling is that Calvin de Haan and Connor Murphy will be tasked to shut down Draisaitl’s line and Keith/Boqvist will get McDavid’s.

What I’ve noticed over the years is that if a defensemen is a very good skater and can keep up with Connor, he’s got a decent chance at shutting him down. Keith, even at this age, can still skate well and Boqvist is a good skater too. Now, I’m not sure how they’ll combat the physicality of Kassian and the tenaciousness along the wall from Nuge, so we’ll have to see there.

Murphy is a very annoying defensive defender for players like Draisaitl. I remember him really giving it to the Oilers top stars this season and said stars really hating it. de Haan is basically an upgraded Kris Russell but he’s coming off of surgery I believe, so who knows how that will turn out? A lot of blocked shots maybe?

The wildcard for me on Chicago’s roster is their third line. Kubalik/Dach/Caggiula.

Dominik Kubalik was a 30-goal scorer this year and Caggiula plays the game for keeps (when healthy). Kirby Dach (8g/15a)… Once in awhile great young players emerge at the unlikeliest of times and Dach has the talent and the ability to do such a thing if the Oilers aren’t careful. Sure, Toews and Kane, Debrincat, and Saad are a scary bunch when they’re on their games, but Kirby Dach is right there and there’s a good chance some on the Oilers might write him off because he’s so young and he hasn’t “earned it”…

Did you see this news? My eyes nearly bulged out of my head Looney Tunes-style when I read this.

I mean this is just one team, but there were a plethora of announcements from teams regarding players who’ve been deemed unfit to play or weren’t included on their team’s registered training camp rosters. Good Lord Pittsburgh! What are ya doing over there?

I’m very curious how many teams this is going to happen to and how they’re going to get into Canada if something like this goes down the night or week before teams are scheduled to head into Edmonton? Would they be removed from the “tournament” or would alterations be made to the playing schedule of that team?

Asterisk time! Who can make it to the Stanley Cup Final with the least COVID positive cases?

Alberta’s Growing COVID Concern

I’ve noticed that Bob Stauffer has stopped updating the Covid-19 numbers lately. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that over the weekend Alberta nearly QUADRUPLED its 7-day average of COVID-19 cases since the beginning of June? On June 6th, the 7-day avergage/100k was .39. The latest numbers tell us that statistic has rocketed up to 1.41 (7/14/2020).

This. Is. Not. Good…

Ontario’s numbers are slowly decreasing and Alberta’s are increasing at a bit of an uncomfortable rate.

What is the “magic number” with regards to things going back into shutdown mode and is that number the same as the NHL’s?…

The weather is nice and folks have been couped up in their houses with not much to do for quite a while now but that doesn’t mean the risk is gone. Look at the US. Look at those states that are absolutely blowing up. How many of them had lower numbers not that long ago?

Do the right thing. Wear. A. Mask.

Puck Racism

The sales are starting to trickle in with this design and I’m going to spam the hell out of it on my website and the BLH Hockey Instagram because I feel passionate about it and I feel like Hockey is Diversity deserves the proceeds that I’ll be donating to them.

So, please. If you’ve got an extra $20 lying around and you want to do a good thing for good people, click the pic down below and grab a t-shirt, a mask, a onesie, a tank top, or some stickers.

Hockey is Diversity is a German group whose aim is to draw attention to the ethnic diversity in society, which goes beyond the sporting borders in order to sensitize people interculturally. The diversity that has long been regarded as an enrichment in sport as a melting pot of people of different ethnicities, cultures, and religions should also be transferred to society.

2019/20 Edmonton Oilers: Insiders Split On When Hockey Will Return

I’ll tell ya what, this is an awesome challenge being presented to sportswriters and bloggers everywhere. On a normal day, one has something to write about be that the game msot recently played or some roster speculation, perhaps something on prospect development, or even the upcoming draft. But when there’s no hockey being played, things get quite difficult I’ve found.

I mean look at the Athletic, for example, Oilers writer Jonathan Willis has gone back to ragging on Peter Chiarelli for his latest article and this guy is one of the more talented writers out there. He simply grabbed an interview between Chiarelli and Bruce Garrioch out of Ottawa and gave his two cents on the former Oilers GM’s comments…

Luckily for me, the boys on the radio haven’t let me down.

Yesterday on Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer interviewed both John Shannon and Mark Spector (Sportsnet) and he posed the same question to both,

“What percentage possibility would we have that we would have a Stanley Cup playoffs and a Stanley Cup Champion?”

Spec said his gut tells him there’s a lot closer to a 25% chance that this happens. He basically said that hockey is at the behest of the governments of Canada and the US and when they decide that it’s safe to congregate in groups of more than 50 people (for example), then we might see some hockey.

“I don’t like the chances, Bob. I hope I’m wrong.”

Stauffer added this,

“Mark, if we get shut down for six more weeks here and they can hit the ice (around) basically May 1st and then we’re up and running for the playoffs May 15th. That’s the only way it’s feasible and a lot of things would have to go right for that to occur here.”

Mark Spector briefly noted that hockey would suffer if it were played in August. He thought the interest would be minimal if they were playing hockey in the summer.

Really? He reckons that there isn’t going to be any interest after the game was ripped out of our hands on the brink of the post-season? You have to be kidding me… Hockey fans are nuts. They’ll watch it on the moon if they have to. In addition to that, I don’t hear anybody complaining about the u-18s going in during August or the World Cups in September…

Shannon said he thinks there’s a 75% chance.

“First of all, let’s put this in practical terms. We all believe that the next 14-15 days are the most important of COVID-19 and the spread and containment of it. if everyone does their part then in 15 days from now we’ll get a better indication and that to me is a lamen and I do believe that the people in professional sports have had a much greater dialogue and understanding of what’s going on with the virus and in reading and in talking to a few people, they’ve said that the optimal opportunity is within 45 days of the 60-day CDC ban or suggested deployment of “nothing going on” that they could be in camp. And so I truly believe within our 15-day window and then another month we’ll have a great indication that the teams can go back to practice.

Now, do I know that the virus is going to be contained? Absolutely not, but I do believe that it will pass and I believe that what we’ve witnessed what’s going on in China recently where there’s a decline in the virus, that we’re going to be in much better shape because we’ve admitted there’s an issue right from the beginning unlike some other countries.”

I like John Shannon, but North America wasn’t one of the parts of the world that hopped on this from the beginning. I was under the impression that Canada and the USA took action quite late and are now “paying the price” if you will.

Bob said he’s 50/50 on the NHL playoffs returning and Stanley Cup being rewarded.

Now, Am I missing something here? Is somebody going to magically make this virus disappear by the end of the week? I don’t think people back home get the severity of how contagious it is and if you saw the pictures posted from a Florida beach over the weekend, I don’t think the public has an idea either.

From last night to this morning, the global confirmed cases of infection went up 30,000 people approximately and we’re not even getting started yet. How in the world does anybody think that there’s even a snowball’s chance in hell that ANYTHING gets going before July?

From what I’ve read, a couple of things have to happen in order to really get a handle on this thing. Herd immunity where there are more infected than not. In order for that to happen, the numbers would have to spike at an unbelievable rate and that would put already stressed-out health care systems at high risk for failure, or a flattening of the curve where the health authorities manage to simply slow down the infection rate to the point to where it’s manageable.

I’ve seen online that the vaccines are on the way but it’s still going to be some time before they can be produced at the level required to stunt this virus globally.

The big thing standing in the way is the lack of testing that’s taking place in some countries and once that challenge is solved, the numbers will climb even more.

I kind of thought that for normal life to resume, the risk of catching this “bug” needs to be zero to none.

If we’re being honest here, I’m preparing for the season to be scrapped. I’m just waiting for an actual confirmation or else I’d just go directly into my off-season blogging content but I can’t do that because I’d feel like an ass if I started posting those articles and then the season actually came back.

I hope that John Shannon’s optimism pays off and everybody is back to normal in two weeks, I really do. I just have a hard time coming to grips with that reality right now and I feel that until it hits North America at full power, the public there has no idea and won’t until it’s too late. I even think that Mark Spector’s 25% is too high.

What do you think? What percentage do you give it that hockey will be back, the playoffs will be played, and the Stanley Cup will be rewarded? Let us know in the comments!

If you’ve got a free moment, please head over to our Instagram account and give us a follow! We’re posting over there daily and we believe that the content is a nice escape from reality.

On the bright side, the break has allowed me to watch some old games on YouTube.

So far I’ve watched game 2 of the 1986 Smythe Division finals between Calgary and Edmonton and I’m just getting into game 7 of the 1987 Stanley Cup Final. The one thing that I’ve taken from both games is that there’s no doubt in my mind that Paul Coffey is the best skater of all-time. He’s completely unmatched. Connor is a close second, but he doesn’t have the grace that Coffey had.

Have you been watching any old games? If so, which ones? Do you have any suggestions?
