2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM6: Oilers @ Wild – 3P2W – Is Kane Able? The Pressure is on the Oilers Winger Now…

Hey y’all! Welcome back for another season of Edmonton Oilers hockey! I’m BLH and I’ll be giving you the skinny on today’s game!

If you’re new here and are wondering what 3P2W means, well, it stands for Three Players to Watch and seeing I’m as lazy as I am, I figured we’d shorten it to 3P2W.

So with that out of the way, let’s talk a little bit about what’s been going on lately in the Oilogospehere and then get into the player’s I’ve put under the spotlight for tonight’s matchup!

Random Pontifications

  • So…  The Oilers are still entertaining the idea of playing McDavid in the Heritage Classic… This club never ceases to amaze me with regards to how it consistently shoots itself in the foot instead of doing the right thing.
  • Edmonton is 1-8-0 in their last nine visits to Minny but the Wild have been leaking goals like crazy for about a week now. Meaning, on one hand it’s a great opportunity for the Oilers to light somebody up and get this train back on track but on the other hand Minnesota could snap their own skid because the Oil love to help other teams out in their time of need.
  • Bill Guerin’s club should be without their no.1 dman, Jared Spurgeon, one of their better goal-scoring wingers in Matt Boldy, as well as another veteran dman in Alex Goligoski. You’d think with that in mind that the Oilers would be in a pretty good spot going into this game but they’d best not sleep on Zuccarello (1g 6a this year), Eriksson-Ek (7pts this season so far), or whoever’s in net be that Filip Gustavsson or Marc-Andre Fleury. Edmonton’s been getting goalied a lot this year, so why would that stop now?
  • This club MUST find that mindset that had them beating everybody left and right from last season’s trade deadline to the end of the regular season. They need it, the fans need it, and FFS, I need it!

Three Players to Watch for the (team)

  • #97 Kirill Kaprizov (2g 4a 6pts) – Six points on the campaign so far to lead his team in scoring and with 9pts in his six career games vs Edmonton, besides being Minnesota’s best player, he’s probably a pretty good bet to get his name on the scoresheet.
  • #23 Marco Rossi (1g 0a 1pt) – The once highly touted prospect has gone through the ringer to get to the NHL but now he’s here to stay as he centers the Wild’s third line with Marcus Foligno and Freddy Gaudreau. He’s a high IQ playmaking center who’ll eat up the Oilers if given the time and space.
  • #7 Brock Faber (1g 1a 2pts) – This young defenseman is a smooth skating two-way blueliner who’ll block shots and put up points. He seems to have outstanding edges from what I’ve gleaned and is not an easy player to get around because of that. Lots of heart and grit in this guy to boot plus he’s eating some major TOI right now with Spurgeon out of the lineup.

Three Players to Watch for the Oilers

  • #91 Evander Kane (0g-1a-1pt) – It’s time to shit or get off the pot for Evander or else it could be the beginning of the end for him in Edmonton. The worst thing would be for him to go down the same road Milan Lucic did.
  • #93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2g-4a-6pt) – What better time for Nuge to assert himself just a little bit more. Not easy with Foegele and Janmark (what?!) as his wingers, but what are you going to do when the coach refuses to throw Holloway up into the top-6?
  • #36 Jack Campbell (1-2-0, 3.65GAA, .902%) – Sweet Jesus, this is just the game Edmonton needs their goalie to steal one for them and Campbell could use the pick-me-up too IF he’s starting which I think he is just from going off of how Woodcroft has been rotating him and Skinner.

The Next Twelve Games (#2-#13)

  • 10/14 vs. Canucks – I think the Oilers will take 2/2 vs. Vancouver to start the year. (W)
    • (4-3 LOSS)
  • 10/17 @. Predators – The Pred don’t scare me. Their roster is in shambles. Poor Jusse Saros and Roman Josi. (W)
    • (6-1 WIN)
  • 10/19 @ Flyers – Their forward group looks entertaining but they’ve got nobody on defense. (W)
    • (4-1 LOSS)
  • 10/21 vs. Winnipeg – The Jets are always a tough out. I like their chances. (L)
    • (3-2 OTL)
  • 10/24 @ Wild – Minny isn’t as good as they used to be but still very solid. (W)
  • 10/26 vs. Rangers – I like NY’s defense and goaltending here. (L)
  • 10/29 vs.Flames – Calgary is going to surprise a few this year. (L)
  • 11/2 vs. Stars – This will be a very tight game. (W)
  • 11/4 vs. Predators – Leon will continue to light the Preds up. (W)
  • 11/6 @ Canucks – I’ll take Edmonton for a third time here, Alex. (W)
  • 11/9 @ Sharks – I don’t even recognize half the names on SJ’s roster… (W)
  • 11/11 @ Kraken – I like Seattle’s roster. Well-rounded. (L)

2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM5: Oilers @ Jets – 3P2W – Holland to Buff Up 2nd Line Via Trade?

“…the Oilers may try to augment that second line with a trade, looking at names like Sam Reinhard, Sam Bennett, or Patrick Kane. Adding a big piece to that second group would allow Edmonton the luxury of rolling out the top two players in the league over and over without depth concerns.” – The Hockey Writers

  • Why would the Panthers want to move either of those players? C’mon… And Patrick Kane isn’t coming to Edmonton to “save the day”, he’s going to a team close to home with a better chance at winning the Cup and less travel. Think New York, Buffalo, possibly Vegas, Colorado, or Boston.
  • Now, what about a team like Buffalo who’s giving scoring winger Viktor Olofsson a hard time? What about Conor Garland who wants out of Vancouver like it’s about to sink into the Pacific?
  • That being said and even with Edmonton struggling to score 5v5, looking at the big picture, is offense really the problem with the Oilers. I think keeping the puck out of the net is the biggest one and that being the case, does big CLB dman Andrew Peeke move the needle? Is he a better option than Cody Ceci, Philip Broberg, or Vinnie Desharnais? Peeke blocks shots, munches the TOI, and has been trusted in the past by the coaches in Columbus to play in critical situations.
  • Apparently Sam Gagner will be signing a deal with Bakersfield shortly. Is he the guy Bob Stauffer was referring to recently when he said he thought the Oilers will be adding a right-shot center? Either way, I don’t think Samwise will be signing a pro deal for a while IF that’s something Edmonton is planning to do.

Three Players to Watch for the (team)

  • #81 Kyle Connor – Has TWENTY shots already this season! To go with that he’s already scored three times and added an assist.
  • #9 Alex Iafallo – Three goals from the third line so far this season. He’s keeping par with the PL Dubois… That’s pretty decent if you ask me.
  • #55 Mark Scheifele – The Jets captain is always a threat. He’s got five points on the campaign so far and with the Oilers struggling defensively so badly, Scheifele will definitely be a player to watch.

Three Players to Watch for the Oilers

  • #18 Zach Hyman name – Hyman has been pretty consistent so far this season and his 6pts kind of shows that. I think he’s good to add his name to the scoresheet IF the Oilers can manage more than one goal vs. WPG
  • #71 Ryan McLeod – Speaking of consistency but sans the production, it could be argued that McLeod’s line has been the best one over the course of Edmonton’s first four games. Sooner or later that puck is going to hit the back of the net for them.
  • #74 Stu Skinner – At the time of writing, I’ve got no idea if he’ll be starting but considering Jack Campbell has laid an egg in 2/3 starts, I think it’s not a huge stretch to think Skinner might start vs. the Jets. My my my, one of these netminders needs to take this net and win a game for the Oilers at some point here or she’s gonna be loooooong season. I hear that Celebrini guy is kinda good.

The Next Twelve Games (#2-#13)

  • 10/14 vs. Canucks – I think the Oilers will take 2/2 vs. Vancouver to start the year. (W)
    • (4-3 LOSS)
  • 10/17 @. Predators – The Pred don’t scare me. Their roster is in shambles. Poor Jusse Saros and Roman Josi. (W)

2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM4: Oilers @ Flyers – 3P2W – Flying High Now

Random Pontifications

  • Something has to be off, is there any Edmonton Oiler with a 5v5 point so far? I’m looking at dailyfaceoff’s page and every Oiler who has a point has got it on the PP…
  • Also, none of Edmonton’s bottom-six have a point… Maybe they should get more TOI with the man-advantage?
  • Good game from the Oilers vs. NSH, but at the same time they had to have that one. The Preds are a lottery team in my opinion. Now, that being said, Jack Campbell looked fantastic and the Oilers new defensive scheme did not. Who lets a team with a weak roster like that get 43 shots? Sweet Jesus, Woody! Do something about that, would ya?

Three Players to Watch for the (team)

  • #10 Bobby Brink – A highly skilled playmaking rookie. I watched some of the Philly/Vancouver game and this guy was making plays left and right. Slippery bugger too. Could give Edmonton’s defenders a bit of trouble.
  • #74 Owen Tippett – A sniper in the making. The change of scenery from FLA to Philadelphia has done Tippett a world of good. He’s on their top-line with Couturier and Atkinson. Very dangerous if given the opportunities (which Edmonton love to do).
  • #11 Travis Konecny – Philly’s leading scorer with 5pts so far and doing it from the 3rd line no less. He’s gritty, quick, and he’s also a potential trade target for the Oilers. Is there an appetite from the Oilers for a Kane-Konecny swap? He’s got one year left after this one @ $5.5M/yr on it… Stauffer talked a bit about him around the deadline last year…

Three Players to Watch for the Oilers

  • #91 Evander Kane – He’s starting the year a bit slow, I think he either gets in a fight in this one or scores a goal. He gets a bit ornery if one or the other doesn’t happen plus with Garnet Hathaway and Nic Deslauriers on the Flyers, there’s sure to be some fireworks.
  • #37 Warren Foegele – Well, egg on my face. McLovin’ looked fantastic on that line with Nuge and Hyman. His tenacity and speed really complimented his older teammates. Can he make it two games in a row?
  • #73 Vincent Desharnais – I don’t know if he’ll get into the lineup tonight but I feel like the Flyers are a team you would slot him in against. Nothing against Broberg but I like Big Vinnie’s “tangibles” more so than the smooth skating Swede.

The Next Twelve Games (#2-#13)

  • 10/14 vs. Canucks – I think the Oilers will take 2/2 vs. Vancouver to start the year. (W)
    • (4-3 LOSS)

2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM#: Oilers @ Predators – 3P2W – There’s a McTear in my Beer

  • Bob Stauffer said that the Oilers will try to acquire a right-shot center around the deadline and that they’re looking at a RW with size, speed, and grit. So Nic Down and…. I’ll give you five names that might fit the bill,
    • Sam Lafferty (VAN) – We know the Oilers have had interest in this player as recent as this offseason but also going back to last year. Maybe the most likely candidate if the Canucks are out of the playoff picture. UFA in the offseason.
    • Brandon Duhaime (MIN) – Another UFA after this campaign. Had nine goals in 51 games last year but not a lot else.
    • Hayden Hodgson (LA) – The dude that ran Mark Stone during preseason. Stauffer’s brought him up plenty of times in the past, but is he better than Erne? I don’t think so. Great energy guy whose contract is up after this year.
    • AJ Greer (CGY) – The Flames plucked him off waivers. He’ll be UFA this summer. Not sure if this is the guy given he’s more of a bruiser than anything and can’t seem to stick to one club for longer than two years.
    • Taylor Raddysh (CHI) – RFA at season’s end, but I don’t know if the Hawks are going to move him. He’s playing pretty well, is he not? 20 goals and 37 points last year… Chicago would be daft to deal him. He’s the guy you want out of this list though.

Three Players to Watch for the Predators

  • #9 Filip Forsberg – No goals on the year for the Preds premier twine tickler. You know what that means? The Oilers will do their best to help him out.
  • #22 Tyson Barrie – Another thing the Oilers like to do is give ex-Oilers a couple points when they play each other. Barrie should be good for at least one assist if not a goal and an assist.
  • #77 Luke Evangelista – Keep an eye on this kid. He’s got size, speed, a shot, drives the net, gets in the muck, and is a really dangerous player for where he plays in NSH’s lineup.

Three Players to Watch for the Oilers

  • #29 Leon Draisaitl – He lights up the Preds every time the Oilers play them. He’s a shoe-in for at least two points in my opinion.
  • #14 Mattias Ekholm – Edmonton’s latest Swedish blueline sensation returning to Nashville for the first time to play his former team will be interesting. He’s already playing well under 100% health-wise and I can’t imagine he’ll be any better mentally. I hope he’s has himself a career game but if he disappoints, I won’t be shocked.
  • #28 Connor Brown – This guy has got to get his shit together. I mean, him with McLeod and Holloway should be a very truculent line and I am intrigued at its potential but the unfortunate part about that is that it means the Oilers are back to being a one line team…

The Next Twelve Games (#2-#13)

    • 10/14 vs. Canucks – I think the Oilers will take 2/2 vs. Vancouver to start the year. (W)
      • (4-3 LOSS)
    • 10/17 @. Predators – The Pred don’t scare me. Their roster is in shambles. Poor Jusse Saros and Roman Josi. (W)

    • 10/29 vs.Flames – Calgary is going to surprise a few this year. (L)
    • 11/2 vs. Stars – This will be a very tight game. (W)

2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM2: Oilers vs. Canucks – 3P2W – Oilers Targeting Caps’ Dowd

  • One of Edmonton’s best players against the Canucks was Dylan Holloway and he left the game in the third period after blocking a slapshot on the PK. Who blocks shots like that in a blowout anyhow? Dylan Holloway does, that’s who. F*cking guy is a legend.
  • What do think the odds of this are? A couple days ago Bob Stauffer is talking about the Oilers finding a way to add an impactful bottom-sixer who could play in the middle six and the very next day Frank Seravalli is chatting up Washington’s Nic Dowd… Coincidence? As if. I asked my source if Dowd was on Edmonton’s radar and was told, “Very likely.” and even with the signing of Adam Erne the club will still be looking to upgrade the depth of its bottom six as it still lacks any sort of identity currently.
  • According to Boston Hockey Now, the Oilers are keeping a close eye on Boston’s netminding situation. In the event that Jack Campbell and/or Stuart Skinner can’t hold it together, Ken Holland may reach out to Don Sweeney as inquire about the services of Linus Ullmark. How he’d pull that off would fall under the “miracle” category if you ask me.

The BLH Instagram account is growing like crazy! We’re gunning for 2000 followers. So please, head on over and give us a follow as we’re posting exclusive content over there that won’t be published here or on our Twitter page.

Three Players to Watch for the Canucks

  • #9 JT Miller – “Miller Time” helped himself to four points in the first game as his line embarrassed Edmonton in game one.
  • #6 Brock Boeser – Four goals!? How about four more if Jack Campbell gets the redemption start?
  • #40 Elias Petterson – Another one who tallied four pints in the season opener. He also rocked a couple of sleepy Oilers in that game.

Remember what I said in that previous blog? About how the Canucks could win that game? If not, take another gander below,

I reckon the Canucks are in tough to win this one tonight. The Oilers’ depth is much better than Vancouvers but two possibilities ring out for me with regards to Rick Tocchet’s men taking the two points,

  • Demko (or whoever is playing net) goalies Edmonton. The Oilers get stunned by a sharp goalie more often than you’d think.
  • The Oilers shit the bed on the PK. They took quite a few penalties in preseason I noticed and with Hughes, Pettersson, and Kuzmenko running the PP, I think it’d be daft to underestimate this scenario.

And what happened? Flu-struck Thatcher Demko goalied the Oilers and Edmonton’s PK shit the bed PLUS their offense couldn’t pass the puck if their lives depended on it…

I don’t know the status of Demko for tonight’s game but Casey DeSmith wasn’t exactly challenged when he came into the game. I mean it was a lost cause at that point for Edmonton, but nevertheless. Edmonton could just as easily let Vancouver walk all over them again.

I have a hard time seeing Connor McDavid allowing his club to put up another stinker like that though. The Oilers might not win but it won’t be another laugher.

Three Players to Watch for the Oilers

  • The Goalie – Here come the Oilers! Amirite? Let me take you back to the first pre-game post of the year when I said this,
    • “The odds on Stuart Skinner regressing are very good as goalies who’ve been nominated for the Calder trophy almost ALWAYS eat shit the following season. So that leaves the club with the ever-reliable Jack Campbell to guide them to the post-season and I tell ya, if he’s not the leading candidate for the Ty Rattie award, I don’t know who is.”
  • #71 Ryan McLeod – Edmonton’s 3C looked pretty good in game one. His whole line did, to be honest. His speed and direct style of play gave the Canucks’ defense a bit of trouble. I think that will continue.
  • #25 Darnell Nurse – Watch tonight. See if Vancouver’s forwards have any issues taking the puck down Nurse’s side because they sure as hell didn’t the other night. Opposing teams are targeting him because he can’t move the puck (but he’s damned good at icing it so that the other team gets a faceoff in Edmonton’s zone against tired defenders) and he gets himself into the shittiest of positions (like screening his goalie on at least two of Vancouver’s goals in their 8-1 humiliation of the Oilers). Did you see Devon Toews new contract? THAT’S what Nurse should be making and Toews is an even better defender.

I’m not going to give this one to the Oilers so easily this time. Whatever Jay Woodcroft had up his sleeves this season might as well be locked away with Dallas Eakins’ “Swarm” tactic and whatever the hell George Burnett had them doing in ’94.

This team… I don’t even know what to say. I mean, there are 81 games left in the year but at the same time, can we really trust Connor and Leon to drag the club to the playoffs again? For YEARS(!!!) I’ve been saying that this team needs to sort it’s defense and goaltending and for YEARS (!!!) they’ve ignored it. You can say they’ve got Ekholm now and Bouchard is developing into a 50pt defender and that’s all find and dandy, but the Viking is 33 years old with hip issues and Bouchard isn’t able to operate alongside Nurse or Kulak or any other defender they’ve put him with aside from Duncan Keith and now Ekholm. So how is this team going to operate successfully if this continues to be the case?

Look, when they’re on, they’re on and nobody can touch them. Even the dynasty Oilers go blown out from time to time. I think this team can go far this year but I’m skeptical as to HOW far with how the goaltending and defense is currently constructed. As for tonight’s game, I predicted a win below and I still believe they’ll grab the two points.

The First Block (Games #2-#13)

  • 10/14 vs. Canucks – I think the Oilers will take 2/2 vs. Vancouver to start the year. (W)
  • 10/17 @. Predators – The Pred don’t scare me. Their roster is in shambles. Poor Jusse Saros and Roman Josi. (W)
  • 10/19 @ Flyers – Their forward group looks entertaining but they’ve got nobody on defense. (W)
  • 10/21 vs. Winnipeg – The Jets are always a tough out. I like their chances. (L)

The date of publication on these predictions is 10/11/2023 and I stand here to say that I think the Oilers will take 16pts out of a possible 24. Let’s see how we do!
