2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM6: Oilers @ Wild – 3P2W – Is Kane Able? The Pressure is on the Oilers Winger Now…

Hey y’all! Welcome back for another season of Edmonton Oilers hockey! I’m BLH and I’ll be giving you the skinny on today’s game!

If you’re new here and are wondering what 3P2W means, well, it stands for Three Players to Watch and seeing I’m as lazy as I am, I figured we’d shorten it to 3P2W.

So with that out of the way, let’s talk a little bit about what’s been going on lately in the Oilogospehere and then get into the player’s I’ve put under the spotlight for tonight’s matchup!

Random Pontifications

  • So…  The Oilers are still entertaining the idea of playing McDavid in the Heritage Classic… This club never ceases to amaze me with regards to how it consistently shoots itself in the foot instead of doing the right thing.
  • Edmonton is 1-8-0 in their last nine visits to Minny but the Wild have been leaking goals like crazy for about a week now. Meaning, on one hand it’s a great opportunity for the Oilers to light somebody up and get this train back on track but on the other hand Minnesota could snap their own skid because the Oil love to help other teams out in their time of need.
  • Bill Guerin’s club should be without their no.1 dman, Jared Spurgeon, one of their better goal-scoring wingers in Matt Boldy, as well as another veteran dman in Alex Goligoski. You’d think with that in mind that the Oilers would be in a pretty good spot going into this game but they’d best not sleep on Zuccarello (1g 6a this year), Eriksson-Ek (7pts this season so far), or whoever’s in net be that Filip Gustavsson or Marc-Andre Fleury. Edmonton’s been getting goalied a lot this year, so why would that stop now?
  • This club MUST find that mindset that had them beating everybody left and right from last season’s trade deadline to the end of the regular season. They need it, the fans need it, and FFS, I need it!

The BLH Instagram account is growing like crazy! Three weeks ago when we started to get it back going we were at a shade over 1900 followers and now we’re gunning for 2000. So please, head on over and give us a follow as we’re posting exclusive content over there that won’t be published here or on our Twitter page.

Three Players to Watch for the (team)

  • #97 Kirill Kaprizov (2g 4a 6pts) – Six points on the campaign so far to lead his team in scoring and with 9pts in his six career games vs Edmonton, besides being Minnesota’s best player, he’s probably a pretty good bet to get his name on the scoresheet.
  • #23 Marco Rossi (1g 0a 1pt) – The once highly touted prospect has gone through the ringer to get to the NHL but now he’s here to stay as he centers the Wild’s third line with Marcus Foligno and Freddy Gaudreau. He’s a high IQ playmaking center who’ll eat up the Oilers if given the time and space.
  • #7 Brock Faber (1g 1a 2pts) – This young defenseman is a smooth skating two-way blueliner who’ll block shots and put up points. He seems to have outstanding edges from what I’ve gleaned and is not an easy player to get around because of that. Lots of heart and grit in this guy to boot plus he’s eating some major TOI right now with Spurgeon out of the lineup.

Three Players to Watch for the Oilers

  • #91 Evander Kane (0g-1a-1pt) – It’s time to shit or get off the pot for Evander or else it could be the beginning of the end for him in Edmonton. The worst thing would be for him to go down the same road Milan Lucic did.
  • #93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2g-4a-6pt) – What better time for Nuge to assert himself just a little bit more. Not easy with Foegele and Janmark (what?!) as his wingers, but what are you going to do when the coach refuses to throw Holloway up into the top-6?
  • #36 Jack Campbell (1-2-0, 3.65GAA, .902%) – Sweet Jesus, this is just the game Edmonton needs their goalie to steal one for them and Campbell could use the pick-me-up too IF he’s starting which I think he is just from going off of how Woodcroft has been rotating him and Skinner.

The Next Twelve Games (#2-#13)

  • 10/14 vs. Canucks – I think the Oilers will take 2/2 vs. Vancouver to start the year. (W)
    • (4-3 LOSS)
  • 10/17 @. Predators – The Pred don’t scare me. Their roster is in shambles. Poor Jusse Saros and Roman Josi. (W)
    • (6-1 WIN)
  • 10/19 @ Flyers – Their forward group looks entertaining but they’ve got nobody on defense. (W)
    • (4-1 LOSS)
  • 10/21 vs. Winnipeg – The Jets are always a tough out. I like their chances. (L)
    • (3-2 OTL)
  • 10/24 @ Wild – Minny isn’t as good as they used to be but still very solid. (W)
  • 10/26 vs. Rangers – I like NY’s defense and goaltending here. (L)
  • 10/29 vs.Flames – Calgary is going to surprise a few this year. (L)
  • 11/2 vs. Stars – This will be a very tight game. (W)
  • 11/4 vs. Predators – Leon will continue to light the Preds up. (W)
  • 11/6 @ Canucks – I’ll take Edmonton for a third time here, Alex. (W)
  • 11/9 @ Sharks – I don’t even recognize half the names on SJ’s roster… (W)
  • 11/11 @ Kraken – I like Seattle’s roster. Well-rounded. (L)

Edmonton Oilers’ Shocking Meltdown: Are the Internal Feuds Risking the Season?

The Edmonton Oilers have found themselves in a storm of struggles and internal conflicts, raising concerns about their performance and teamwork this NHL season. Despite high expectations, the team’s 1-4 start has left fans and analysts questioning their capabilities. One of the notable incidents involves star player Evander Kane, who openly expressed his dissatisfaction with his ice time during a recent interview, reflecting the frustration brewing within the team.

In addition to Kane’s concerns, there are reports of attitude problems from players like Leon Draisaitl, further contributing to the team’s challenges. The Oilers’ lack of depth and defensive prowess has also been exposed, leaving them vulnerable on the ice. Even with the talents of McDavid, the team has struggled to maintain momentum.

This rocky start has sparked internal discussions among the coaching staff and players. The Oilers’ coach, Jay Woodcraft, faces a challenging situation as he navigates through the team’s internal conflicts. The struggle to find cohesion and overcome the hurdles is evident, raising questions about the team’s potential to meet the high expectations set for this season.

As fans and analysts speculate about the Oilers’ future, it’s crucial to monitor how they address these challenges. Will they find a way to resolve their internal conflicts and bounce back from their disappointing start? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for more updates on the Oilers’ journey in the NHL season, and share your thoughts on their struggles in the comments below. Your insights are invaluable as we analyze the team’s performance and anticipate their path to redemption.

BLH’s Thoughts:
  • With Connor McDavid now out of the equation for the next two weeks (give or take), Jay Woodcroft has to ask Evander Kane what he wants and Woodcroft has to give it to him with a caveat. That being, Kane better damned well produce because the club needs him right now. This is not the kind of year where you want to go into November with one win under your belt and be forced to go on a 70 game heater.
  • So the official word is that the Edmonton media think Leon Draisaitl is a baby after that loaded question from a Post Media journalist on the weekend. But that’s not even the end of it, some are saying he’s got something way up his ass and he’s not happy hence the undisciplined play so far. Is the Woodcroft magic wearing off finally? Would it shock you if a new coach was behind the bench starting next season seeing as Jeff Jackson is running the ship now?
  • Nic Dowd, remember the name folks…
  • FYI: No team has ever won the Stanley Cup after losing their season opener by more than four goals.
  • What is the Oilers’ game plan now? McDavid’s been hurt in the past but they team’s never been as good as it is right now (despite the record). Is it fair to say that this might be Edmonton’s biggest test since Gretzky got punted to LA in ’89?
  • As Mike Tyson once said, “Everybody’s got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • 630CHED: Georges Laraque was on Oilers Now recently and when asked if he thought any team in the NHL would take overpaid Nashville Predators centre Matt Duchene if he was put on waivers, he said no but added that Duchene has a reputation for being a “cancer in the room”.
    • The former NHL heavyweight also added that he would only pay Ryan Nugent-Hopkins $6Mx6yrs if he was GM of the Oilers citing that he doesn’t think the Oilers star could produce 60pts/yr on another team.
  • TSN/NHL.com/Twitter: Three budding superstar youngsters out of New York will not be heading to the 2021 World Juniors. Jack Hughes (NJ), Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko (NYR) will continue to prepare for the 2020-21 NHL season instead of being loaned to their respective u20 national teams.
  • Sportsnet: “‘I’ll do it’: Logan Paul agrees to bout with Sharks’ Evander Kane”
  • The Score: Former Buffalo Sabres sniper Tomas Vanek doesn’t believe the NHL is tough anymore.
    • “I don’t know if it was really dirty (in the past), that’s the way it was – if you go in front of the net, you’re taking a punishment,” Vanek said. “Now the game has changed. You’ve got a lot of smaller defensemen who are more mobile. They cross-check a little bit, but those guys are nonexistent really anymore.”
  • James O’Brien (NBC Sports): Wonders if things don’t start well for the Bruins this season, will they decide to punt on the year and deal some veterans like Tuuka Rask, Jaro Halak, or David Krejci since their contracts are expiring at year’s end.
  • Rory Boylen (Sportsnet): Ethan Bear is expected to re-sign with the Oilers but another move will have to accompany it.
  • Josh Wegman (The Score): Predicts where these remaining UFAs will land: Erik Haula (SJ), Mikael Granlund (FLA), Anthony Duclair (LA), Andreas Athanasiou (NSH), Travis Hamonic (WPG), Sami Vatanen (PHI).
  • Eric Duhatschek (The Athletic): Believes the Oilers are TWO GOOD pieces away from the Western Conference Final/Stanley Cup Final. A goaltender and a difference-maker on defence.

Bob Stauffer’s Three Needs for the Edmonton Oilers

Bob Stauffer, the host of Oilers Now, woke up the Oilogosphere with an interesting tweet this morning…

I don’t think that any of these things are a surprise to anybody, especially if you saw the line combos that Todd McLellan had together during practice on the first day of 2018… GAWD they are ugly… But I am SO looking forward to seeing them in action! I really want to see Auvitu as a forward. That said, when the coach starts doing things like this, there’s trouble in the hen house Frank…

If you’re the type that really reads into things you might come to the following conclusions based on Stauffer’s tweet:

  • A Shooting Left Wing = Maroon is gone and Lucic is being transitioned into a middle-6 player AKA they’re looking for Connor’s and or Leon’s winger.
  • A Powerplay Right-Shot D = The Matt Benning experiment on the power play is over. (I’m not sure why it was even started…)
  • A 3rd Line Centre Who Takes Faceoffs and Kills Penalties = Nuge is on the market and Letestu probably is too.

I’ll start off by saying that I’m not sure we’ll ever see a complete 1st line ever. The door to McDavid’s LW may be ever-swinging for the duration of his time in Edmonton but with the way that McLellan has been switching between Lucic and Maroon on that line tells me his “big man on 97’s wing” theory is a failure and maybe it’s time to toss some skill up there with the greatest player in the game.

I do question why that player has to be a shooter though. The Oilers have ZERO problems shooting the puck which is evident in the numbers. In fact, Pat Maroon is 8th in shots for LWs in the NHL. Lucic is 40th mind you but that’s still more than Filip Forsberg.

Their problem is getting the puck into the net on the PP. I’d argue that they need a trigger man for said powerplay though. Someone who doesn’t hesitate to fire the puck on the net with the man advantage.

LEFT-WING CANDIDATES:

  • Evander Kane (BUF)
  • Mike Hoffman (OTT)
  • Max Pacioretty (MTL)

These three players are the target of every team in the league, as they should be. Their teams are struggling and looking to shake things up. They would be priced at a premium rate though.

  • Tyler Ennis (MIN)
  • Max Domi (ARI)
  • Carl Hagelin (PIT)
  • Alex Galchenyuk (MTL)
  • Thomas Vanek (VAN)
  • Michael Grabner (NYR)

I feel that these players would be a bit easier to acquire as nearly all of them, apart from Vanek, are slumping. Max Domi has one 5×5 goal this year according to naturalstattrick.com. Tyler Ennis has been a healthy scratch in Minnesota. Galchenyuk can’t escape the ongoing media scrutiny in Montreal and Hagelin can’t seem to find his game this year.

I like Hagelin a lot here because he’d be very handy on the PK I feel with his speed and forechecking ability. For those same reasons PLUS he can score, I like Grabner but I’m not sure the Rangers would be willing to trade him as they’re in the hunt for the post-season.

Funny thing about the Oilers left wing is that both Maroon and Lucic are having good seasons from an even strenght POV. Maroon has more EV goals (9) than Taylor Hall, Brad Marchand, and Artemi Panarin. Milan Lucic has the same amount of even-strength goals (6) as Filip Forsberg and more than Mike Hoffman, Matthew Tkachuk, and Max Pacioretty. Funnier yet, Jujhar Khaira has the same amount of 5×5 goals as Lucic.

Twenty-one 5×5 goals between Maroon, Lucic, and Khaira is great I feel. CGY’s top three LW’s have EV 24 goals, NJ has nearly 30, NYI has 25, Vegas has 21, and WAS has 24.

I will caveat this by saying naturalstattrick doesn’t seem to have everybody’s positions 100% correct. For example, I don’t think that the San Jose Sharks have only played with two left-wingers this year.

One last player I’d like to mention is Sonny Milano (CLB). He has 7 EV goals in 268 min TOI for the Blue Jackets. I don’t watch a lot of Columbus games but I do see his name in the transactions list a lot due to being called up and sent down to the AHL. This kid is a skiller but his 200ft game isn’t quite there but that’s something I care very little about. His problem might be he doesn’t shoot enough with only 24 EV shots this year to date.

A RIGHT-SHOT POWER PLAY POINT MAN

I do think that the Oilers would be better offer picking up this sort of player sooner rather than later and perhaps using a Matt Benning or an Oscar Klefbom to do it.

The candidates:

  • Mike Green (DET)
  • Kris Letang (PIT)
  • Erik Karlsson (OTT)

It seems I’ve put these players in order of most attainable to least. The Oilers would have to sell the farm to bring in a player like Karlsson, meaning Leon possibly going the other way and I’m not subscribing to that. If the Penguins were looking to go younger on defense, it’s weird that they’re not given it’s an area of concern for them, than Letang would be a more realistic target. As for Mike Green, Matt Benning and a prospect/pick, or maybe Anton Slepyshev or Drake Caggiula ++ may be able to bring him to the City of Champions.

But as these guys are the premium targets on this year’s market, you have to ask yourself if the Oilers have the assets to acquire one of them without crippling the future of the team.

  • Colin Miller (VGK)
  • Justin Faulk (CAR)
  • Brandon Montour (ANH)

These are your straight up PP specialists. Lotta chaos here. I believe that these players could be had for less than the Karlsson cluster above.

  • Shane Gostisbehere

The reason I bring up Ghost Bear is because not only is he one of the NHL’s premier PP specialists but the Flyers LW depth is atrocious and I do wonder if something could be done with Pat Maroon there. Not straight across of course but maybe a larger deal as I know the Flyers want to rid themselves of Jori Lehtera and his chunky contract.

A PENALTY KILLING/FACEOFF SPECIALIST

I’ve been saying for years that the Oilers lack two things,

  • vets who can take the draw
  • agitators to draw penalties

I really feel that the Oilers, whoever is running them at the time, are always trying to re-create the boys on the bus from the early 80s and I wish they’d stop. You cannot had a team over to a nucleus that isn’t old enough to buy a beer in the US. You need to have capable veterans to surround them and to take the weight off of their shoulders from time to time in order to give the kids room to breath. Take a look at Toronto now and go back and look at the Penguins rosters that Crosby played on in his early days.

  • Jean-Gabriel Pageau (OTT)
  • Matt Duchene (OTT)
  • Derek Ryan (CAR)

I want to focus on these three players at the moment. I’m sure there are more out there but I don’t think they’re available and between Ryan, Pageau, and Duchene, there are three guys who can score a goal,  take a draw and kill penalties.

I feel that with Pageau you get a player who is annoying as fack! He’s speedy, fearless, he draws penalties, and has a dusting of offense to his game (remember the playoff hatty not too long ago?).

In Duchene, you’d get a higher contract but with shorter term. That’s not where the rub lies though, it’s in his faceoff abilities. He’s one of the best in the game hands down. Over the last three seasons he’s nearly 60% on the dot AND he has shown that he can produce points in the past (116pts in his last 190 games). Another reason I include him is because I do wonder if Sens ownership is putting pressure on their GM to get rid of him. Duchene only has 6 pts in 23 games this season with Ottawa.

Derek Ryan is the player that I believe Stauffer is hinting at within his tweet. He’s a former U of A guy that has caught on in Carolina and stuck there. Not a big guy and not really much of a producer points-wise (Just a shade of 50pts in his last three years) but he’d probably be better on the kill than say Drake Caggiula plus I believe he’s a righty and very good on the draw. Not sure if Stauff would be able to strap down his U of A alumni boner if the Oilers brought Ryan in though. Careful around Rogers Place if that does happen.

Lastly, I’m getting the feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach these days with each growing loss. The feeling that something is going to drop soon be that a trade or a firing. Who could be leaving Edmonton? That I’m not 100% sure on but I’ve heard rumblings that the brass above Chiarelli is getting very impatient and action is being requested.

Might Santa Bring the Oilers Some New Roster Additions This Christmas?

The Edmonton Oilers are back on track baby! 6-3-0 in the month of December is more like the Oilers that I’ve grown to know and love, amirite?! Cam Talbot is back to being Dadbot 5000, Connor is 100%, Letestes is producing from the 4th line and scoring from the PK. Kassian’s smile has made a return, the Nuge and Looch are having outstanding seasons so far!

The boys are on the hunt and the teams above them in the Pacific had better be on their games for the rest of the season too because the Oilers are coming for them!

I don’t know if you heard/read that quote from Friedman last week about the one Western Conference GM that said he wouldn’t count the Oilers out just yet because McDavid could very well pull them to the playoffs himself (I’m paraphrasing of course) but we’re 6 or 7 games in a row now that the Oilers have played VERY well and against some top teams in the league like St,Louis, Toronto, and Columbus.

The tide is turning for Edmonton and the Hockey Gods have had their fun with them. The time is now for Connor’s team.

Speaking of Connor’s team, I got an interesting phone call from a lifelong friend out of the 907 area code, he was sort of rambling about his vehicle being on the fritz and having to need it for work on Christmas Eve. He calls every year about this time to talk about the Oilers and I asked him if he thought the Oilers had been good or bad this year and also if he thought they might have a good Christmas present-wise. Wink wink.

He said that they’d had a tough start to the year but that if they behaved themselves before Christmas he could see them getting an extra present or two.

After he said that I told him I had to get going and to send my best to his wife and Rudy and I got going with my day.

Earlier in the year, Peter Chiarelli got a lot of flack for not doing enough to ensure the depth of his team could handle any crisis that may arise. A lot of the concerns, in my opinion, were voiced the heaviest during Laurent Brossoit’s stint as the starter while Cam Talbot was out and before Brandon Davidson was claimed on waivers when Eric Gryba was filling in.

Well, a good portion of the Oilers roster was also sick at that time but they managed to find a way to keep it together (barely) but there were rumors around that time that the Oilers were looking at Michael Hutchinson, a player that Chiarelli had drafted in the 3rd round of the 2008 draft when PC was the GM of the Bruins.

Now that the trade rumors have died down a bit I think that the fruit of those talks may come true once the roster freeze is lifted. Chiarelli was working the phones like a madman last month and what better time to capitalize on those efforts than now, when the team is on the rise.

Hutchinson in for Brossoit? I’m not sure if the Oilers would move Brossoit out or simply toss him on waivers and hope that he passes through so they can send him to the AHL but how would that affect Nick Ellis’ development and what would be of Eddie Pasquale then? Are there even any NHL teams that would take Brossoit at this point?

Hutchinson is only 27 years old and is sporting a 12-1-1 record with a 1.72 GAA and a .950 SV%. He’s contracted until the end of this season at a shade over $1M.

What’s his value like? The Jets’ goaltending situation seems pretty sorted with Hellebuyck and Mason as well as highly-regarded prospect Eric Comrie coming along. I’d venture to say a mid-round draft pick would get it done. Maybe the Oilers send Pasquale too in order to make a spot for Brossoit in Bakersfield?

Hutchinson was a recent recipient of the AHL player of the week award.

The other name that got me wondering was Evander Kane and that’s because on today’s Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer and Uber-insider Elliotte Friedman were talking about Buffalo and of course Kane’s name came up and as soon as it did, Stauffer tossed out a “Hmmmmmmm”. You know the kind that makes you think you’re on to something.

I have ZERO ideas as to what the Sabres would be getting from the Oilers. I know that Anton Slepyshev’s name is out there, I think that Pat Maroon would be an option, but I also wonder if there’s a defensive option there that would interest the Sabres. The caveat with Chiarelli sending a defenseman over is that the ones that most ppl would want to trade have an NMC in their contract and I really doubt that Buffalo would be one of the teams they’d be willing to waive it for.

I think that draft picks and prospects are the tender at this point in the year. Lowetide wrote over at The Athletic about the Oilers trading their 2018 1st rounder and had this to say,

If Edmonton trades the 2018 first-round selection, they have to be absolutely certain the talent bubbling under in the system contains real quality. That may be the decision being weighed by the Oilers today and the answer is decidedly unclear.

*Click here to subscribe to The Athletic for more gold like what you read above from Lowetide! But not only him, there’s also the insider stuff from LeBrun, game breakdowns from Justin Bourne, prospect coverage from Corey Pronman. Not just Fancy stats articles!

I’m not too sure a player like Kane comes to Edmonton this early in the season without parting with that 1st rounder and Pat Maroon though and I’m also not convinced the Oilers necessarily require him right now. Would he be an upgrade on Maroon, YES! But it’s also hard to determine what kind of effect it would have in the locker room and Edmonton’s team chemistry. Maroon is a very well liked player on this team. Kane’s Ego might be one of the larger ones in the league today but might that swagger be a breath of fresh air on this team?

If any deals have been made prior to the roster freeze but we’re waiting on the announcement after it, I think they’ll be minor tinkerings like a Hutchinson trade or possibly a guy like Frank Vatrano.
