NEW BLH Video!!! Oilers + Foo Fighters? Yes Please!!!

Good Lord has this summer been a blazing hot bore. There’s simply nothing going on this summer hockey-wise apart from my own Taiwanese rec hockey league and I can’t bring myself to write on every little thing that happens in the Oilogosphere just to bring the site some views. I mean if I made any money off this bloody thing, I probably would do about anything to get the clicks.

I will say this before getting to the video that I think Yohann Auvitu, if given the leash to do so, could be a very astute signing for the Oilers. Now, I’m not sure he’ll get that leash because he’s not gritty and he’s a bit chaotic on the defensive side of the puck but given the right deployment and zone starts, he may surprise a lot of people. And you’re going to love the AHL guys like Malone, Callahan, and Rattie. I’d make sure I’m watching a few more Condors games this season if I were you. They’re going to be VERY exciting!

That said, I took an hour or so and did up this short compilation of goals and fights from our new Oilers acquisitions. I’m going to do one up for the kids the Oilers drafted in due time but for now, I present to you the newest BLH Youtube video!!! Enjoy!

Making Sense of the Ryan Strome for Jordan Eberle Trade by Andrew Taylor (@drewtaylor1978)

January 3rd, 2009.  That was the day I became a massive Jordan Eberle fan.  One of the most memorable play by play calls I remember, I can still hear Gord Miller yelling out “CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!!!”  If you can’t recall that day let me give you a Youtube link to jog your memory:

In October of 2010, I bought a signed Jordan Eberle World Juniors jersey off of a guy on Kijiji for an extremely respectable price (he asked $350, but since there was no certificate of authenticity and I was planning to wear it anyway, I talked him down to the $200 a regular jersey would cost). Jordan Eberle was going to help bring the Oilers back to respectability, back to being competitive, back to glory.  I bought in, I was a fan.  Eberle, along with Taylor Hall, Linus Omark, and Magnus Paajarvi were H.O.P.E., and now all H.O.P.E. is gone.

When Edmonton finally clinched a playoff spot in March one of the reasons I was most excited was to see Eberle have a shot at translating that magic into meaningful post-season goals.  I guess I just assumed that he would rise to the challenge, and to be honest, I was more than satisfied with his efforts and results in the first round series against the Sharks.

When the challenge of the next round came up though, it seemed like he had simply ran out of gas.  Maybe he was playing hurt.  Perhaps the novelty of the playoffs wore off.  Whatever happened, Eberle had seemingly lost the drive.  Now, the Oilers as a team weren’t good enough to advance past the more experienced Anaheim Ducks, so putting the failure to advance to meet the Nashville Predators in the third round squarely on #14 would be both unfair and unproductive.

Any good enterprise needs to be able to survey the landscape and adjust to it on the run; continual improvement if you would like.  The idea is that if you can’t see and meet the needs of both your customers, employees, and market, you will get left behind.  For years the Oilers were not able to do that.  A lot of mediocre NHLers became very rich coming here to play as overpaying for free agents became a necessity and this transpired to their homegrown talent.

So making all of the salaries work while being able to add pieces is the real challenge of building a team in today’s NHL.  Players have always been assets, but now the cap space is as well.  If you overpay at one position you must offset it by underpaying at another.  If your second line right wing gets $6 million, you need to adjust what you can give your top two centres, and I think we can all agree that keeping McDavid and Draisaitl need to be a bigger concern than keeping Jordan Eberle.  If Eberle had a cap hit closer to $4 million he would still be here, and we wouldn’t be having this conversation; such is the business of the game.

The Numbers

I usually adhere to getting my stats from the NHL website (www.nhl.com/stats) as they are at least not supposed to show any bias.  Goals are goals, wins are wins, and standings are standings.  They don’t get into advanced statistics such as Corsi, and my belief is they choose not to because of the differences in interpretation.  If I look at that website and see that Connor McDavid has 100 points, then Connor McDavid has 100 points, there’s no reason for them to be inaccurate.

There is, however, one issue with their website.

I believe that it is an indirect result of the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement with their players’ association, but the stats make zero mention of salaries and/or cap hits; the information is available to the general public still through sites such as www.nhlnumbers.com.  The issue with the stats not correlating with the cap hits is the cap hits are essential in assessing the stats.  If two players are identical in every facet of the game, but player A makes $2 million per year while player B makes $3 million per year, then player A is the better asset (as players are shuffled throughout the league in trades, those worth more will bring back the better return).

So, if Jordan Eberle scored 51 points in 82 games, or 0.62 PPG, and Ryan Strome scored 30 points in 69 games, or 0.43 PPG, then Jordan Eberle is the better player right?  Yes, absolutely, as long as that’s all you focus on.  But Ryan Strome only costs you $2.5 million a year whereas Jordan costs $6 million.  So, if you double Strome’s cap hit as well as his PPG, he would have 60 points in 69 games, or 0.87 PPG (that would put him 5th in the league for right wingers in PPG while being tied for 16th in the league for right wingers in cap hit, so it’s obviously not that simple, but stay with me).  The point is, with all of these players having different cap hits and cap hits being a big factor, shouldn’t we involve it in deciding which player is better?

I have come up with a formula that might be a simple indicator for evaluating wingers in relation to the salary cap room they take up.  I’m not suggesting this is a be all and end all for evaluating all players, I’m not even saying that it is refined enough to use outside of this conversation.  But to emphasize why I believe Peter Chiarelli might have felt comfortable with today’s trade I think this can answer some questions.  If you divide points by cap hit in millions and add it to PPG, you can double both PPG and cap hit and the answer remains the same.

So, what do the results say?  Well, to no one who pays attention’s surprise, the best right winger in the league for that metric is Patrick Eaves.  At his minuscule $1 million contract and scoring 51 points in 79 games, I think anyone would take him on their team as their first line right wing, even though he was 20th overall for right wings in points in the NHL.  In theory, though, you use the money you save on a player like him to bring in, say, a better defenseman, you have better balance and a better team.

So where do Strome and Eberle place?  Well, there were 46 right wingers who scored 30 or more points last season, and 6 of them (Anthony Mantha, Connor Brown, David Pastrnak, Patrik Laine, Sebastian Aho, and Mikko Rantanen) were all under entry level contracts, which would skew their results.  So of the 40 players left, here are the results which are relevant to this discussion (note I have Ryan Strome on their twice, the bottom is to show how doubling both the PPG and cap hit keeps my metric the same):

I think it is imperative as Oilers fans that we keep some perspective about moves that are made for the next 10-15 years.  After all, we will have a second line centre that fans of many other teams wish they had for their top line.  This is going to cost though; at times we may have an optically questionable blue line, or our roster might need tweaking right up until the trade deadline.  Sometimes we’ll lose a fan favourite like Jordan Eberle and it’ll seem like they didn’t get nearly enough back.  But tell me you’d give up Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl for those issues to be solved.

And ask any Penguins fan if you can have success with lesser known players on your team’s wing, even on the first line, and an average defense core, as long as you have two really good centres.  If things go as planned for Peter Chiarelli and the Oilers, and their fans, H.O.P.E. will be replaced by actual winning.

Ridiculous 3-Team Trade Rumor Confirmed by Dreger?

OK… If you follow me on Twitter or read last night’s Halak rumor blog, do you remember how I told you about the 3-team trade rumor that seemingly gets tossed around every year involving the Oilers? I think Darren Dreger just gave this year’s proposal some legs…

Last night I wrote a post detailing a Halak to the Oilers rumor and near the end, I included a little tidbit about a 3-team trade that I’d been passed. Well, I was prepared to wait a little bit to get this published and I did go out and ask a few more people who I believe to be in the know about this rumor to more or less get the amount of confirmation I needed to go forth with this post. I said on Twitter this morning that this rumored deal is ridiculous, like blockbuster ridiculous and probably something closer to an HF Boards trade proposal than a real one but Darren Dreger has weighed in now and that gives it real legitimacy…

These are the hazy details:

To Colorado: Travis Hamonic, Brock Nelson, *Brandon Davidson*, Oilers 1st round pick
To Oilers: Tyson Barrie, Jarome Iginla, Ryan Strome
To Islanders: Matt Duchene, Jordan Eberle

WHAT?!!

It sort of contradicts the Halak to Edmonton rumor that I wrote about last night but that is an insane rumor, right?

Now, I put an asterisk beside Davidson’s name because he was one of the iffy players my sources weren’t sure on. But the main players (Barrie, Duchene, Eberle, Hamonic) were in it for sure.

I know that Colorado is working like crazy to move Iginla and it’s becoming more apparent that Matt Duchene might be going the same way that Taylor Hall did in his last season with the Oilers. A good player whose attitude is souring on a struggling franchise who’s wasting his talents.

Any trade rumor I’ve been passed or come across on Twitter re: Jordan Eberle to the Islanders has included Ryan Strome coming back. I couldn’t confirm the draft pick, anytime in the past when I’ve asked about Chiarelli’s willingness to deal that pick I was told that if the deal was right, he would.

For the Islanders, this would be a very big statement made to John Tavares that the franchise is ready to move Heaven and Earth to get him to stay in Brooklyn. I believe the team values Ryan Pulock more than Travis Hamonic and after this season, can you blame them? Hamonic has been a disaster.

For Colorado, this would be the kind of deal that would start the reset. I believe that they need a top-pairing left-handed dman more than a right-handed one but that could be a player they acquired with Gabriel Landeskog, no? Cue, the Krug to Colorado rumours.

For the Oilers, there’s your top-4 offensive right-handed defenseman, your right-handed PP shot, and a young player with term left on his deal who can switch in and out from the centre position to the right-wing position. All that’d be left is the backup goalie and the shopping list would be complete.

But getting back to the mad deal that could be in the works above, I think there would need to be some wiggling around to do to make it work dollar-wise (mostly for the Islanders) but yeah, there you go.

I honestly cannot see a trade like this going down now. These kinds of trade fall apart so easily because there are so many moving parts but it could set something else up that could be consummated before the trade deadline passes or another deal at the draft where money is less of a problem.

If this mega-deal does actually happen, I’ll have a more detailed post to follow.

**Disclaimer** Lastly, during this crazy time of the year, we’re bound to hear a shit ton of rumors coming from every nook and cranny out there. I’m not connected to the Oilers, I hear what I hear from people who know people and I pass that on to you. Rarely, IF EVER, do the things I post here come true but the batting average of an insider has never been that good anyhow. It’s all speculation until the teams make things official folks! So I hope you can enjoy what you read here but don’t take it too seriously. I don’t. **Disclaimer**

Islanders Looking at a Pair of Oilers?

I got a message late last night from my source and it said that Eberle to the Islanders was heating up. Oilers were looking at Strome and multiple draft picks in exchange for Eberle but that there was more to it and to wait and see…

I think I called something similar a couple of days ago…

In the summer, could Chiarelli get the Islanders to send him Ryan Strome and a pick or prospect for Jordan Eberle? (source)

Of course, it was a hypothetical but I’ll take it! Oh and just before we really get going into this, my source isn’t the lovely Treena’s Oil even though she just went on a twitter craze with a handful of tweets that mentioned some of the thoughts I will go on talk about below.

It’s funny, a lot of the same names keep popping up in rumours and in various blogs. I mean, Lowetide has mentioned Reto Berra on numerous occasions on his blog and I feel like the Halak to Edmonton murmurings have been on low-rumble since he was demoted to the Islanders farm team.

Personally, I don’t believe the Oilers coaching staff is convinced that Brossoit can handle the backup duties. Brossoit looks to be the kind of goalie that needs the no.1 spot and has to be playing all of the time, similar to Talbot. I also believe that Nick Ellis might be the better of the two.

How much better is Curtis Lazar than Anton Lander?

We’re two veteran dmen down right now after last night’s game vs. the Panthers. It’s unknown how long Larsson will be out and we haven’t heard a lot on Sekera. The Oilers will need Brandon Davidson now more than ever. Is trading him in a deal that smart? Unless said deal was bringing back a defenseman… *Cough* Shattenkirk *Cough*

I can’t see Edmonton dealing Khaira. He seems very much in the mold of a Chiarelli-type player. Big, strong, hard-working, positionally versatile…

The other little tidbit, I was also told that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was another player the Islanders might be looking at…

Not a huge surprise there but would it be a bigger surprise if the Oilers dealt both Eberle AND Nugent-Hopkins to the Islanders? That’s a MAJOR chunk of cap space right there and the Oilers would have to bring some back their way. Would you be shocked if it was Johnny Boychuk waiving his NMC, Jaro Halak (Bob Stauffer did say yesterday that he believes the Isles are prepared to buy Halak out though), and Ryan Strome coming Edmonton’s way? Edmonton taking the short-term hit on Halak and then going out and signing Brian Boyle and/or Derek Ryan in the offseason? If the Oilers can find a taker for Pouliot as well as Fayne, the kind of deal mentioned here becomes more palpable financially for the Oilers.

So maybe a version of the roster before July 1st hits would look similar to this:

Maroon/McDavid/Puljujarvi
Lucic/Draisaitl/Strome
Slepyshev/Boyle/Ryan
Khaira/Letestu/Kassian

Klefbom/Larsson
Sekera/Boychuk
Nurse/Benning

Talbot
Halak

When it comes to Nuge and Eberle, I really think we’re going to find out how much of the things we’ve ingested are true before the 2017/18 season gets going with a lot of what the Oilers can or will do in the future riding on what the upcoming RFAs will be demanding, right? So we wait… Will Draisaitl demand north of $6M or can Chiarelli convince the kids who are driving this bus to take a bit less for the better of the team? It’ll be interesting nevertheless.

Just before we conclude and I shamelessly plug our wicked t-shirts, I do wonder how much of the news we get is information vs. disinformation, this time of the year. How much of what Stauffer says is genuine as opposed to something just being tossed out to keep prying minds away from precious truths. Same goes for the news that I hear from my source or the rumours you hear or read from the sites or people you know.

The other thing is, I think it’s pretty common for the GMs to use the insiders to influence negotiations? For example, yesterday on Oilers Now! Frank Seravelli was really pushing the idea of the Oilers acquiring Kevin Shattenkirk and earlier in the week Dreger was saying how the Islanders/Eberle talks had taken place earlier but had cooled off more recently. Yet, here we are today getting news of trade talks heating up between the Isles and Oilers and my feeling before today on Shattenkirk was that the Blues were going to keep him. Bob MacKenzie has stated that he believes otherwise here.

So are the Islanders looking to put pressure on the Oilers to make a deal here while they are in the thick of a pretty kickass resurgence? Are the Blues laying some heat on Chiarelli to get his butt in gear because the pieces they’d like would be of better use now than later?

Lastly, in the back of my mind, I’d like the things I share here with you to come true because it’d make me ego feel good and who doesn’t enjoy a good stroking of the ego 🙂 But the reality is, even if the reports I get are true, they may never come to fruition because the line is always moving in negotiations and trades fall apart all of the time. I mean, what is an insider’s batting average when it comes to rumours anyhow?

Kosmic’s World Cup of Hockey Team North America Roster Prediction

March 1st 2016
Post Deadline

Well….here I am…I must have done something right, because I’m back to trip with the BLH Universe again! How’d you like Chia Pete’s first go as an Oiler at the ol’ deadline? Do you think that the Oilers made out alright? Me, I don’t really have any complaints, plus, that’s not what my post is about, haha…

As promised, this is my 2016 World Cup of Hockey Team McDavid, errr, I mean Team North America roster predictions/report. Let’s face it folks, this team belongs to the McWizard!

But first, I have to get something of my chest. I don’t even like the inclusion of the 23 and under North American and European teams. Do you really think that Mcdavid wants to be the one who scores the goal that eliminates Team Canada (hypothetically speaking)? Of course he doesn’t!! He wants to score the huge goals for Canada, and party with the big boys!! But….here we are, and that train has left the station.

Too be honest though, as an Oilers fan this team does possess a lot of Edmonton connections. First off, the GM is Peter Chiarelli, and the Head Coach is Todd Mclellan. Plus some key members of the team I might add.

So, just like my last report, we’ll start with the Goaltenders. Speaking of which, I think this is going to be the team’s weakest position. Only due to the lack of experienced ’tenders. There is USA’s John Gibson, who has won both gold and bronze at the World Juniors. Also, Jets prospect Connor Hellebuyck won bronze at the World Championships. So there is some experience there, that can’t be discounted. I do honestly believe that Gibson is on the verge of breaking out huge, and what a scene that would be if he could do it on the world stage.

Potential Goalies: John Gibson, Connor Hellebuyck, Malcolm Subban, Matt Murray, and Zach Fucale

Again, this is just my personal opinion, but you can’t ignore Gibson and Hellebuyck’s international resumes. So I see Chiarelli going with (in this order):

John Gibson – Connor Hellebuyck – Malcolm Subban

The defence is a different story….this is seriously a stacked backend ladies and gentlemen! We’re talking about names like Ekblad, Reilly, Jones, and Hanifin. That’s heavy duty. Baby’s got back! I didn’t realize just how stacked they are until I started to research this story. So let’s get on with it.

Potential Defencemen: Aaron Ekblad, Noah Hanifin, Matt Dumba, Morgan Reilly, Colton Parayko, Seth Jones, Dougie Hamilton, Connor Murphy, Jacob Trouba, Cody Ceci, Colin Miller, and Ryan Murray

Making my prediction for the defence was actually tougher than originally thought, but if I was GM, the defence would like something like this:

Seth Jones – Aaron Ekblad
Morgan Reilly – Jacob Trouba
Ryan Murray – Dougie Hamilton
Extra Skater: Matt Dumba

Ah yes, now the Mcdavid’s, I mean the McJesus’, Errg…Now for the forwards. You thought that the defence was stellar? Shit dude, you haven’t seen anything yet! We’re talking about names like 2 time Cup winner Brendan Saad, Johnny Hockey himself, and that other fellow, what”s his name, oh yeah…CONNOR MCDAVID! Honestly, this team should not be taken lightly at all. There is A LOT of potential firepower on this squad. So let’s get cracking at it.

Potential Forwards: Connor McDavid, Brendan Saad, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nathan McKinnon, Curtis Lazar, Johnny Gaudreau, Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews, Sean Couturier, Ryan Strome, Sean Monahan, Alex Galchenyuk, Jonathon Huberdeau, Mark Scheifele, Jonathon Drouin, Sam Reinhart, Max Domi, Dylan Larkin, Boone Jenner, Sam Bennett, Robby Fabbri, Anthony Duclair, and Bo Horvat

See, I told you that they’re doing pretty well for themselves….so take this with a grain of salt, but here are my line predictions:

Johnny Gaudreau – Connor McDavid – Nathan McKinnon
Brandon Saad – Sean Monahan – Jack Eichel
Alex Galchenyuk – Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – Ryan Strome
Max Domi – Sean Couturier – Curtis Lazar
Extra Skater: Auston Matthews

As awesome as it will be for all of these kids to play together, you can’t tell me that they wouldn’t have preferred to play for their respected countries? So hopefully the next inception of the World Cup only includes countries. But regardless, the North American team is an incredibly talented squad and they’re my sleeper pick to win it all. They definitely shouldn’t be underestimated just due to their age, they have a lot of international hardware between them, plus…..McDavid.

Well folks, once again, thanks for tripping with me!! Stay tuned for my next article……an introduction to the future, the man known as Laurent Brossoit….
