Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Pageau, Strome, Broberg, and Edmonton’s Summer Plans

Edmonton Oilers insider and play-by-play colorman Bob Stauffer has had some really interesting things to say this week regarding his feelings on some of Edmonton’s future plans. I’m going to show you some of his comments over the week that has passed so far where he’s touched on the Oilers 2020 trade deadline plans, who he thinks the Oilers will target at the 2020 NHL draft, and some very fascinating news on some of Edmonton’s prized prospects.

Two things before we get into all of that though. I recently wrote that I thought the Oilers should forget about adding a significant piece to their top-6 and focus on improving their bottom-6. Most notably their third-line center. Well, to my surprise, TSN’s Frank Seravalli has pointed out that Ryan Strome could be someone who might be available over the next month according to long-time New York Rangers beat writer Larry Brooks.

Listen, if Ryan Strome is available it really is incumbent on Oilers GM Ken Holland to see what he can do about re-acquiring him. He’s the perfect 3rd line center who probably won’t cost the team an arm and a leg, unlike JG Pageau.

A better scenario would be Holland bringing both in, but that would most definitely cost the Oilers dear and it doesn’t sound like something that would fall under Holland’s plan for the Oilers since he was hired.

The other thing, Elliotte Friedman reported in his 31 Thoughts post that the Oilers are working on extensions for a trio of players. Riley Sheahan, Josh Archibald, and Joakim Nygard. Man, Edmonton’s GM works his ass off, eh? In addition to those three players, he’s been trying to nail down a deal for Zack Kassian and has had preliminary talks with Darnell Nurse’s camp too. Toss in the trade negotiations he’s been going through… Respect.

What does Kassian 3:16 mean to you? Click the pic above and get this design today!

Now, speaking of JG Pageau, the aforementioned Bob Stauffer recently had this to say about the Sens star pivot,

Now, I did hear over the weekend, ’cause I was of the belief that Pageau there was a high likelihood that he would re-sign in Ottawa. I was told “Not so fast there Stauffer. There’s been a little bit of fatigue that has taken place in that relationship.”

That changes things a bit, doesn’t it? Pageau has been on Edmonton’s radar basically all year and it wouldn’t surprise me if they did find a way to acquire him. This situation reminds of the draft when about a week (I think) before the draft it came out that the Oilers were going to take Philip Broberg. Nobody believed they’d let everyone know who they were picking, but that’s exactly what they did.

As for Pageau’s price, Stauffer said this,

I’d heard that Pierre Dorion (Sens GM) was looking for a guy back with term. Like a guy like Nugent-Hopkins. Seriously. Which I would not do. I would not do that trade. OR a first round pick. Now if we’re talking Puljujarvi and a second-round pick, I might consider doing that, but Ottawa would have to take a swing on Puljujarvi.

I know what the immediate reaction to the RNH comment is and I can’t blame you. That said, what if the Oilers could pick up both Pageau and Strome with contract extensions that didn’t eclipse the $8M per year total?

I agree that the first-rounder shouldn’t be in play for Pageau if it wasn’t in play for Taylor Hall. The second-rounder and Pulju is an intriguing proposition though but I think you have to pass on that too. Could the Oilers pick up a player better suited for their team’s development plan for that package?

A lot of debate this season has been which defenseman might be on the move and from the beginning of the year, two names have dominated that discussion, Adam Larsson and Kris Russell. Mr. Stauffer commented on both of those players this past Monday during the call-in portion of his show.

People say, would you trade Larsson, as an example right now, for Kasperi Kapanen? I wouldn’t do that deal during the season. I may evaluate something in the offseason and in terms of Kris Russell, he’s a $4M cap hit. I think there’d be some limitation on the takers around the league on that. I do think Larsson would have some currency for teams looking for defensive shut down D, but the Oilers need him right now. – January 20th on Oilers Now

The next day Stauffer and Sportsnet’s Mark Spector also spoke about the pair of defenders,

They need Larsson right now, do you now agree on that? Well, let’s see what happens in the offseason… Here’s the thing, there’s teams in the league that like Larsson, no disprespect to Kris Russell, he’s got a year left at $4M; that’s a tough contract to move.

Adam Larsson? You can move that contract. There’s teams that would do a deal. I mean, I think Toronto would probably consider doing a deal sooner rather than later, I just don’t think the Oilers can afford to at this time. Edmonton’s built a bit of depth there. Benning, we’ve got to see where he’s at as well in terms of his return to the lineup cause I think he’s a useful player. Some might say he makes too much at $2M. – January 21st on Oilers Now

I don’t know what it sounds like to you, but to me, it sounds like Bob is of the belief that the Oilers will be moving on from Adam Larsson or at the very least, IF they wanted to, it wouldn’t be difficult for them to do so.

Personally, I wouldn’t move him. I get the urgency to transform the defense into more of a mobile puck-moving unit, but the Oilers do not have another right-shot defender that can do what Larsson does at his current ability coming. Plus I reckon Ken Holland likes his physical shutdown defenders that come from Sweden. We have to consider what a great contract Larsson is on too. Two more years at $4.166M for a top-pairing 20+ minute per night defender is damned good in today’s NHL.

As for Russell, Edmonton might have to include a prospect with him in order to facilitate a trade. That said, there are teams like Colorado ($17M), the Islanders ($14M), and the Jets ($10M) who have a ton of cap room who would value a gutsy player like Russell for a playoff run. Would those teams be on his 10-team trade list though?

OILERS PROSPECTS AND THE UPCOMING DRAFT

I’m just going to put these comments in point form for the sake of time. If you’d like to check what Stauffer or his guests said if full, I’ll include the audio at the end of this segment.

  • Oilers Director of Player Development Scott Howson said Phillip Broberg might be spending another season in Skelleftea next year.

Howson also believes that if the European players aren’t ready to come over, the Oilers should just keep them over in Europe and allow them to come over when they’re ready. He felt that Evan Bouchard will be more of an offensive defender than Broberg but that the Swede would end up being a top-4 defender.

  • Due to improved skating, Broberg’s d-partner in Skelleftea, Filip Berglund has more than put himself into consideration for the Oilers to sign him before they lose his rights this year.

If Evan Bouchard graduates to the NHL by next season, the Condors will be in need of an offensive defender on the right side. I suppose Joel Persson could be an option should he agree to re-sign with the Oilers, but I’m not 100% confident of that happening. Phillip Broberg could come over as well and be paired up with his SHL partner and in fact, that very well could be one of many determining factors for him.

  • Markus Niemelainen is another player the Oilers need to make a decision on. Howson said that he’s now playing 20-22 minutes a night for his club in the SM-Liiga as a defensive defenseman. He noted that he moves really well, has range and size (6’5″) but he’s average with the puck and that will be the issue with him but there are lots of guys playing like him in the NHL that can skate and move but are merely adequate puck movers. Howson also said that Niemelainen is content with who he is as a player and not worried about point production.

This player sounds a lot like Martin Marincin, doesn’t it? There’s a possibility that both players (Niemelainen and Berglund) could come over and play in Bakersfield next season but it sounds like there’d need to be some extra work into convincing Ken Holland that they’d be worth it given they’re not his guys. Howson felt that these players have really improved to the point to where they’ve forced the Oilers to seriously consider them.

  • Howson believes that Raphael Lavoie has get stronger and become a better skater cut out some of his junior habits like taking breaks on the ice when he’s been playing too much. He figured that since Lavoie’s TOI has been cut down since his trade to Chicoutimi that this would happen naturally. Howson called him a “one-shot scorer”.

I’m not as convinced with this player as some are. To me, he could end up being either an Alex Chiasson or a James Neal. Depends on him. I like how he’ll graduate to the AHL next season though as I want to see more of him. He was decent at the World Juniors but not a game-breaker. What I want to see from him is more urgency in his game. He’s a big guy so I want to see him use that frame accordingly.

  • Stauffer mentioned that he wouldn’t trade either the first or second-round picks in the next draft and he’d try to acquire a forward using Jesse Puljujarvi in order to replenish Edmonton’s cupboards.

If the Oilers were drafting today, they’d be picking 19th and 50th I believe. In those spots, I reckon Edmonton could come away with a very good shooter like Jack Quinn (Ottawa 67s) or possibly Hamilton’s newest import forward Jan Mysak in the first round and in the second round, it wouldn’t be out of the possibility to see a player like Barrie’s Tyson Foerster, Sarnia’s Jacob Perreault, or Sherwood Park Crusaders forward Carter Savoie still on the board.

I wonder though if Edmonton Oil Kings star Jake Neighbours is around when Edmonton is picking after the first round, would they take him? He’s got a ton of heart and as much skill to go with it.

So could you imagine Holland being able to add that much firepower to the pipeline in Edmonton AND another talented player with a Puljujarvi trade over the summer? Now think three years down the road when these players are closer to being NHL ready and the Oilers are an annual playoff team. Holland is sitting pretty with a bunch of talented young forwards that he could either use in the lineup OR as trade fodder at the deadline.

Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Riley Sheahan Signs and Is Patrick Marleau Still in Talks With Edmonton?

Yesterday, Sportsnet’s Mark Spector announces that the Edmonton Oilers have signed Riley Sheahan to a team-friendly one-year deal work 900k. So the summer-long rumors of Sheahan joining the Oilers come to a close. Edmonton gets their third-line center after exhausting all resources in search of a right-handed one, Gaetan Haas notwithstanding.

But what does it mean for the rest of the roster construction?

The Oilers have a good problem at the moment. They’ve got too many bodies for the bottom-6. I mean, you’d rather have too many than not enough, right? This will also force the youngsters from Bakersfield to really prove their mettle during training camp as they’ll be going up against “veterans” who are deathly afraid of losing their place on the squad. Players like Tomas Jurco, Colby Cave, and Sam Gagner. It’s going to force those players who want to be on the team to really assert themselves during camp as the competition is going to be cut-throat.

Bob Stauffer wondered aloud during yesterday’s Oilers Now about what it would mean for Cave specifically and I think that’s a very fair question. He’s a bubble player on this team with last season’s player personnel, now with all these extra bodies, it’s almost safe to say, he’s probably an AHLer… But then what does that do to Bakersfield’s roster make-up?

Who am I missing? I usually miss someone when I do up the Condors’ lines. Is Stukel going to be a factor for them this year?

Where does anybody coming down from Edmonton fit in there? The answer is, there isn’t anywhere. Oilers GM Ken Holland might have to make a trade or hope someone gets claimed on waivers before the season starts.

Now compound that with the idea that Patrick Marleau and the Oilers have been talking (according to TSN’s Darren Dreger)… It gets my head bone in a jumble. Where’s the money coming from and where are the roster spaces suddenly appearing out of?

Geez… Bloody fat thumbs. That’s supposed to say. “There have been discussions with Edmonton.”

Don’t get me wrong, I would love nothing more than for a consummate professional like Marleau to join the club and show these kids what it means to be a leader, but unless there are some trades in the works, I don’t see how it’s going to work.

Edmonton Oilers: How Would You Feel About These Potential PTO Candidates?

It’s that time again Oilers fans! It’s time to talk about which unsigned veterans you’d like to see come to Edmonton on a professional tryout.

Now, if you remember, last season the Oilers gave Alex Chiasson a PTO and he came in, performed well, and was given a contract for the year. Then he proceeded to bury the biscuit 22 times! An excellent example of a PTO that worked out.

But what about an offer or offers that didn’t? Well, we don’t have to look that far back, do we? Last season, then GM Peter Chiarelli also signed defenseman Jason Garrison and forward Scottie Upshall to PTOs as well and what transpired was Upshall’s knee was fooked and Garrison ended up getting signed but it was quite apparent that he didn’t have the boots for the game at the NHL level anymore and eventually made it to the Djurgarden in Sweden via Chicago.

So as you can see, it doesn’t always work out when you’re signing these guys. Most of the time they’re well into their 30s and past their prime. These are players that are just looking to stay in the NHL at this point.

And that brings us to some of the candidates that I believe would serve the Oilers well if they would come to Edmonton on a pro tryout.

  • Thomas Vanek (LW/RW) – 64gp 16g 20a 36pts 14:06 TOI/gp
  • Patrick Marleau (LW/C) – 82gp 16g 21a 37pts 16:20 TOI/gp
  • Riley Sheahan (LW/C) – 82gp 9g 10a 19pts 14:39 TOI/gp
  • Justin Williams (RW) – 82gp 23g 30a 53pts 17:27 TOI/gp
  • Brian Boyle (LW/C) – 73gp 18g 6a 24pts 12:44 TOI/gp
  • Magnus Paajarvi (LW/RW) – 80gp 11g 8a 19pts 13:28 TOI/gp
  • Joe Morrow (LD) – 41gp 1g 6a 7pts 13:57 TOI/gp
  • Michael Stone (RD) – 14gp 0g 5a 5pts 15:56 TOI/gp
  • Marc Methot (RD) – 9gp 0g 0a 0pts 16:56 TOI/gp
  • Ben Hutton (LD) – 69gp 5g 15a 20pts 22:21 TOI/gp
  • Jamie McGinn (LW/RW) 19gp 4g 3a 7pts 10:40 TOI/gp

Just for what it’s worth, Jason Gregor said recently that he believes Boyle has contract offers on the table, so that more or less removes him. Justin Williams is taking a break from hockey right now and if he was to return, you’d have to think Carolina would be his first choice. I have heard Michael Stone’s name in connection with the Oilers before, so there’s that. And I have a sneaky feeling that local Edmonton super-agent Gerry Johannson might be trying to get Joe Morrow a PTO from the Oilers.

Of course, if the Oilers are planning to just play out the season, then this exercise is really a waste of time, but even though my feeling is that there’s not much to look forward to this year, you might not share that opinion.

As I’ve said time and time before, the Oilers need more veterans on their team but not just any old player with a decade of experience. These individuals need to be players who the team can still lean on off the ice and on it.

Milan Lucic, for example. After a season and a half whatever game he had, left him and that wasn’t the only thing that left him. His swagger and clout in the locker room left him too I believe and now he’s getting mentioned in the same breath as Andrew Ference.

What a crock of shit that comparison is by the way. Since when do we compare a 28-year-old forward in his physical prime to a 34-year-old defenseman who was breaking down at obviously in the back nine of his career? Maybe it’s a Boston thing OR… maybe it’s an Edmonton thing where whoever is the GM of the bloody club thinks that they’ll be the one that will bring back the 80s dynasty.

You cannot build a champion on the back of teenagers and kids barely old enough to buy a beer in the States. It happened once and I’m betting it’ll never happen again. So stop trying to do it and at the same time, stop giving the keys to the city to said teenagers and kids barely old enough to buy a beer in the States.

Anyways, back to what I was saying about veterans. Just listening to Lucic’s comments above, vets like playing with other vets… The more the merrier, but they have to be able to play the game and be effective. It’s not enough to have a Stanley Cup ring or two nowadays. It’s not enough to be able to lead the league in blocked shots or be the scariest fighter in the NHL. You have to be able to score too.

I just reckon that the power balance is shifted too far towards “The Core” right now. It needs to head back the other way a bit and that’s why I like the signing of Mike Smith. He doesn’t take any crap from anyone, teammate or not. Same with James Neal I’ve heard. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad one, we’ll have to wait for that to be seen.

My belief is that the Oilers are still looking for a center for the third line and that they’re pretty much stocked on the wings. That analysis is one done on paper though and when camp gets going, you never know what’s going to happen. So if I had to choose out off of the list of players above, I’d offer PTOs to these three,

  • Patrick Marleau
  • Marc Methot
  • Riley Sheahan

A part of me would like to see Paajarvi and Gagner reunited and for Thomas Vanek to finally make it to Edmonton all those years after being offer-sheeted by Kevin Lowe. What about you?

Patrick Marleau can still contribute in every facet of the game. He can be used on both special teams’ units and as a middle-6 forward. What he did for Mitch Marner in Toronto is so sorely needed in Edmonton. McDavid has nobody to lean on for leadership advice and let’s get this out there right now. Just because he’s the best player in the game doesn’t mean jack about his leadership abilities. It’s not on one player anymore anyhow when it comes to leading a team, it’s on a group.

I like the idea of Marc Methot pairing up with Oscar Klefbom or a young guy like Caleb Jones. He was Erik Karlsson’s rock for many years in Ottawa and if I’m not mistaken, he held that same role in Dallas as John Klingberg’s partner. He’s only played 45 games over the last two seasons though, so there’s that… Maybe he’d just be another Jason Garrison…

As for Sheahan, I’m getting tired of the Oilers being shite on the faceoff. Nuge has been in the league for nearly a decade and he’s never been good at faceoffs. Why?! Why hasn’t this former 1st overall pick done anything to improve arguably the most important aspect of a center’s game in all of that time? Maybe the should’ve moved him to wing earlier in his career…

Sheahan won’t score you many points, but I think it’s prudent to ask if he’s a better option than Colby Cave, Kyle Brodziak, or Gaetan Haas.

The one thing that is going to irk you about these three players is that their advanced analytics are poor and is that something that a coach like Dave Tippet would be able to work with? Basically, with Marleau and Methot, the ice is tilted pretty severely when they’re out. It’s a bit of a new thing for Marleau, do he might be able to snap out of it, but I’m not sure Methot would be able to.

Click the names to see their career analytics courtesy of Natural Stat Trick.

Methot
Marleau

If you’re asking how the Oilers would fit any number of these guys in, it’s simple. I don’t believe that anybody would claim Kyle Brodziak or Colby Cave if they went through waivers and if one or both of Haas and Nygaard couldn’t cut it, they could have their deals mutually terminated and back to Europe they would go.

The problem with adding players is that there’s a limit on contracts though… Oilers are tight to the 50-man ceiling as it is and they’d definitely want to stay around 47 contracts if possible. They’d have to get creative, that’s for sure.

What do you think? Who’d you like to see come to Edmonton on a professional tryout? Let is know in the comments below!

Edmonton Oilers Rumors: The Players Chiarelli Was Watching This Week

A source of mine texted me the other day with regards to what the Oilers are in the market for and I was told, “a puck moving PP defender”. In addition to that, they might possibly be looking for another center.

**Disclosure: I’m not an insider nor do I play one on the television. I simply offer information for your entertainment. I just so happen to know some folks who are employed by NHL clubs or are very close to people employed by NHL clubs and have been given shareable information. So take what you’re about to read as watercooler banter if you will. Something to chat about at the pub. Things change all of the time and so rarely do these things come to fruition. Thanks – BLH**

So when I poked a prodded a bit more to find out some names, these are the ones that were disclosed:

  • Dmitri Orlov (D) – WAS – I cannot see the Caps trading Orlov away unless they’re setting up another trade. Another thing that must be considered here is his contract. Orlov will be paid $5.1M per season until 2022/23 and there’s a M-NTC that kicks in next season.Orlov has struggled this season, only putting up 2pts in 14 games thus far.
  • Olli Maatta (D) – PIT – Maatta tied a career-high in points last year with 29 but for some reason is in Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan’s doghouse. He makes a shade over $4M a year on a contract that doesn’t expire until the ’21/22 season.Maatta has 4 points in 13 games to date this year.

Now, the thing that has me most questioning why the Oilers would be looking at these two players is PP TOI. Orlov has 12 minutes on the PP this season and Maatta has just under 13 minutes with the man-advantage.

Pittsburgh is obviously looking to shake some things up as they’re in quite the funk at the moment but you’d have to think that GM Jim Rutherford would like an upgrade on their blueline, right? I don’t know if Sprong and Maatta get them that but it’s definitely a start.

Washington might look to divest themselves of Orlov but any deal involving serious cash coming to Edmonton has to see it going out too and I haven’t the foggiest idea what the Capitals would be shopping for. They’re the reigning Stanley Cup champions, what would they even want? If I had to guess it might be prospects but even then they’ve got a nice crew of young dmen coming up like Djoos, Bowey, and Seigenthaler.

Final thought on these two rumored targets: Unlikely.

That sa

[/caption]That said, the Oilers have 1 goal all year from their blueline and that was a PP marker from PTO-signing Jason Garrison. They need production from the backend. If I were the Oilers I’d be looking at these players:

  • Torey Krug (BOS) – $5.25M/yr – 4pts in 4gp.
  • Connor Carrick (DAL) – $1.3M/yr – 4pts in 9gp.
  • Colton Parayko (STL) – $5.5M/yr – 5pts in 13gp.
  • Alex Pietrangelo (STL) – $6.5M/yr – 5pts in 13gp.

I don’t know where the Blues are going but they’re last in the Central right now and I really don’t know if they’re going to pull a playoff rabbit out of their ass this year. Would they be interested in a package that included Jesse Puljujarvi/Kailer Yamamoto and Darnell Nurse for Pietrangelo?

In Boston, Matt Grzelyck looks to be cementing his status in the Bruins lineup with 7pts so far this season. That has to put a guy like Torey Krug on notice given his salary and injury history. My feelings with Krug is that if he can help get a team to the playoffs, that’s what matters. The post-season is a whole different bowl of cherries and usually belongs to the teams with the best goaltending.

Does anybody know what the deal was with Connor Carrick in Toronto? He’s seemingly a good player. He’s young (24) and he’s right handed to boot. Aren’t those the kind of defenders teams are clamoring for? Admittedly, I haven’t watched him that much and so perhaps I shouldn’t even be including him but I like what his traditional stats say, so I guess we can fight about it if you want.

The name Tanner Pearson has also been mentioned to me recently. He hasn’t a goal scored all year and only has one assist to his name. He makes $3.75M per year but is only 36 years old.

The Kings are shite this year and Pearson has been a pretty consistent 40pt guy since he became a full-time NHLer, so I’m not going to read too too much into him not producing right now. He’s got 21 shots at ES, just as many as Ilya Kovalchuk and his ES PDO is a whopping .92. He’d fit right in with Lucic’s PDO party eh? Looch’s PDO is sitting at .929.

Riley Sheahan is another name that has popped up.

It’s fun to talk about the pla

[/caption]It’s fun to talk about the players coming in but what about the players that are possibly moving out?

Here’s a list of early-season candidates to be traded out of Edmonton:

  • Ryan Strome (C)
  • Zack Kassian (RW)
  • Jujhar Khaira (C/LW)
  • Darnell Nurse (D)

Now, you’re not going to get a lot back for those players but Strome for Pearson makes a lot of sense to me for some reason. Two players struggling to produce who make similar money.

I think a lot of people will also say Jesse Puljujarvi but I’m not convinced they’re ready to deal him. He’s only 20 years old people! He’s barely played over one NHL season. There’s no need to come up with stories that a trip to the minors might “save his career”. I mean honestly, how many of your careers were ended at age 20? How many were started at age 20?

That said, there’s, as Darren Dreger put it, tension between his camp and the Oilers. If you listened closely to Esa Tikkanen’s interview during the intermission yesterday you might have heard him say this about Pulju,

Nine minutes in the game is not enough to him but you have to learn and he has to keep it focused all the time what he can do best and that’s to score goals.

It’s an interesting quote I find. Obviously, Jesse isn’t happy with 9 minutes a game (Pulju played 9:06 vs. FLA) and I thought he looked hungry when he was on the ice but at the end of the evening his line was outshot and outscored. Not sure Yamamoto would’ve done any better.

If there’s one thing that has bugged me about Peter Chiarelli, it’s his reluctance to send players like Yamamoto and Puljujarvi down to the AHL and keep them there because now we’re sitting here talking about a 20-year-old who’s career is in jeopardy.

Down on their AHL club, they are playing the kids and playing them tons. Tyler Benson, Cameron Hebig, and Cooper Marody are lighting that league up! Give them Pulju and Yammo and it’s going to be lights out for their opposition.

Let’s create a culture of winning at some point in the Oilers organization here.
