Wisniewski Signs PTO with Tampa Bay

wisniewski

The Edmonton Oilers have missed yet another chance to add to their defence. A piece of the pie they’d be clambering for all summer. James Wisniewski has signed a PTO (professional tryout offer) with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Now, we’ve been hearing Wisniewski rumours to the Oilers all summer. I was personally told that term was the hold up, not money. Now the Oilers are behind the 8-ball a bit. They can watch from afar but honestly, if they’re only willing to give him a 1 or 2 year deal, why would he sign in Edmonton? A veteran like Wisniewski will be looking for his best opportunity to win a Stanley Cup and if he does well, Tampa likes what they see, and he decides to choose Tampa Bay after training camp ends; he’s done well for himself as Tampa and Pittsburgh have the best shot at heading to the Cup finals next year.

In all truth Oilers fans, as soon as you seen this tweet from Bob Stauffer, you should’ve known that Wisniewski wasn’t coming to Edmonton on a PTO.

He also said on Oilers Now! this week that IF Wisniewski didn’t get an offer elsewhere, he’d sign a PTO with the Oilers…

Bobby tends to lay it out there if you can read between the lines and he very rarely crowdsources like that on Twitter. So that’s a tell right there.

WHAT NOW?

Can the Oilers still sign the right-shot 31yr old dman who played all of 47 seconds last year before blowing his knee out? Sure. But as I said above, the ball’s not in their court anymore. But should they be really concerned? We don’t even know how Wisniewski can skate on that repaired wheel.

OTHER OPTIONS

Well at this point if the Oilers are really set on having a RH’d shot on the point they’ve got the following choices:

  • Adam Larsson: I think he could surprise here if given the chance.
  • Jordan Eberle: Not unless he’s packing a 100MPH clapper now days.
  • Jesse Puljujarvi: This might be more real than you think.
  • Mark Letestu: (crickets)

Am I missing someone?

More realistically they’ll be playing a LH’d shooter on the blue line for the PP.

  • Oscar Klefbom: Did somebody say bomb?
  • Brandon Davidson: Showed he can fire ’em last year.
  • Nail Yakupov: He can shoot, no doubt about that but accuracy might be an issue here.
  • Andrej Sekera: Shinpad Assasin…

Apart from those guys, the free agent market still has:

  • Dan Boyle: Can’t skate like he used to and may have issues keeping up in the Western Conference.
  • Jakub Nakladal: 5pts in 27 games last year for Calgary. Has a hard shot but doesn’t sound like teams are lining up for him.
  • Eric Gryba: Not the droid the team’s looking for…

What about trade?

Well, personally I think the team is set up front apart from some tinkering in the bottom nine. But if there’s a team that needs draft picks and left-handed defencemen, then they’d be a good fit for the Oilers as a trade partner.

  • Dennis Wideman: Please. Please. Stop with the Wideman suggestions. Screams Nikitin!!
  • Cody Franson: A big boy who we know can shoot and skate but would the Sabres eat skrilla to make it happen?
  • Ryan Murphy: Young guy who can’t seem to get traction with the Hurricanes.
  • Brandon Montour: Lowetide likes this guy but I’m skeptical as to his availability. 57pts in 68gp for Syracuse (AHL).

If anything the team could wait until training camps are winding down and see who gets waived or they could wait a tad longer and see who shakes loose during the season and make a clever deal to bring that RHD in.

So what do you think? Should the Oilers just buckle down and get ready for the year with what they have? Or should they try to force something through because it’s imperative that they make improvements on their record in 2016/17?

Good Lord Not These Guys…

Well here we stand on July 27th of 2016 and the Edmonton Oilers are a much different-looking team. It’s a tougher team. A Stronger team. One with more “swagger” and “attitude” yet I’m still getting messages that the team is looking to add to that.

I know. I get it. The hardest thing in the world is to take seriously a website called Beer League Heroes and your Oilers insider news from someone whose Twitter handle is @beerleagueheroe… But it is what it is and like I always say, you can believe it or not but anybody living back home in Canada knows it’s not that hard to be connected to someone within a professional hockey team.

In the end, these things rarely go down and it is also silly season, so we’re bound to hear all sorts of things, right? Let’s just enjoy them for what they are!

The Word on the Street

  • Sounds like the Oilers WERE in on James Wisniewski but are not now. He was supposedly looking for around $27 million over 5 years and the Oilers were only offering around $13.5 million over 3 years.

A bit of madness on Wisniewski’s part no? Bloody guy just had his knee done up, missed all of last year and is looking for raise? On the other side of the coin, it’s been laughable reading the tweets of folks wanting to get him in on a PTO… Not gonna happen. He’ll be looking for a guaranteed roster spot or it’s off to Europe.

  • The Oilers could be one of eight teams in on Kris Russell. Number being tossed out there is $4Mx3-4yrs

Yikes! Apart from changing things up in the dressing room culture-wise, I don’t see the point in the Oilers doing this? How many left-handed dmen do they need? Honestly! They’ve got some really nice pieces on the back-end coming up in Nurse, Davidson and Reinhart; and Mark Fayne is already taking up that obligatory overpaid bottom-pairing spot. Why even move on Russell?

  • Oilers will be going all in on Tyson Barrie but they want Nugent-Hopkins in return and the Oilers have outright said no to that. It’ll be wingers and picks if Colorado wants to deal with Edmonton or the deal won’t go down.

So yeah, there it is. In my heart, I don’t believe that the Oilers will end up with Barrie unless they’re moving Eberle. I have a tough time believing the Avalanche would accept a deal made up of Benoit Pouliot, Brandon Davidson, and/or the 2017 1st round pick but I think that is what Chiarelli is trying to do.

Going into the 2016 season will be much easier than expected. The defense is really improved with the additions of Oscar Klefbom and Adam Larsson and with Brandon Davidson, Darnell Nurse, and Griffin Reinhart coming in one year older, one year stronger, and one year smarter. Andrej Sekera and Mark Fayne are a solid pairing to boot.

If the Oilers can’t find that puck-mover this season, Jordan Oesterle paired with a good stay-at-home dman might be an option as well. He performed very well at the end of last year with regards to moving the puck either by rush or pass. That being said, he might be the Matt Irwin of this group.

D1: Klefbom/Larsson
D2:Sekera/Davidson
D3:Nurse/Fayne
Reinhart, Oesterle

There are still a lot of “ifs” with the defense, I’ll admit that. But what I wouldn’t do is force a move to try to upgrade it either.

What do you think of all of this? Some pretty crazy stuff right? Let me know in the comments below!

Oilers Waiting on Avalanche?

Tyson Barrie, Av or Oiler by October?

As we sit in our comfy chairs awaiting the next move that will solidify the Edmonton Oilers roster a tad more, we’re forced to speculate. And so today I want to chat a bit about the rumblings I’ve heard regarding some roster moves that could be in the works.

FOREWARNING

*As I say with almost every post like this, believe me or not, it’s up to you. I’m not Dreger, McKenzie, Rishaug, or Stauffer for that matter. I’ll tell you what I hear and you can take that as bullshit or you can believe it. It’s no skin off my ass either way. But don’t be rude about what you read. That’s all that I ask from you as a reader.

I write, you read.*

HURRY UP BURNABY JOE!

The title of the post gives it away but it’s my belief that the Oilers are biding their time and waiting on the results of the Tyson Barrie arbitration hearing which will take place on July 29th.

Nothing new here but it looks like the Avs are in for the same culture shifting move that the Oilers themselves took part in when they traded Taylor Hall to the Devils for Adam Larsson. Speculation has calmed down as of late but right around the draft Gabriel Landeskog and Matt Duchene were thought to be available.

Now nothing has been released to say that aren’t still on the block and there’s nothing I’d love more than to see two of Landeskog, Duchene, or Barrie become Oilers but that’d be a deal done in my dreams. Besides, could you see the Oilers parting with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, and/or Leon Draisaitl to get, say, Barrie and Duchene or Barrie and Landeskog?

But an Eberle for Barrie deal could very well be on the table depending on the outcome of said hearing.

MINOR MOVES AND THE DEFENSE

Brandon Pirri is still on the Oilers radar and from my understanding he’s got the Oilers on his radar as well but this is a move that would surely be dependent on Edmonton moving Yakupov.

  • Earlier this week we talked about a deal that would send Yak to Florida for right-handed dman Alex Petrovic. This was quickly quashed by some pretty big names in the media and very quickly I might add (almost too quickly to not have a modicum of truth to it).
  • Pirri has amassed 80 points in 166 games played. Not bad for a guy that can’t seem to find a permanent home the last three years and is yet to be signed this offseason.
  • Brandon Pirri has been mentioned by Bob Stauffer in the past on his show, so his name should be of no real surprise to those following the Oilers closely.

I’ll tell you why I think this would be a good fit for the Oilers.

  • Cheap, bonus-laden contract.

Pirri wants to find a place to put his roots down in. He can score at the NHL level, there’s no doubt about that but after playing on three teams (Chicago, Anaheim, and Florida) in three years, the 25-year old will be looking for something solid, something the Oilers can offer.

  • He can float in the middle six and contribute on the PP.
  • He’s got a history that tells us he can produce.
  • He’s averaged 135 shots over the last two years and a 13.15% shooting percentage. Compare that with Yakupov, whose had an average of 159 shots and a shooting percentage of 6.8% over the last two years… Efficiency leans towards the former 2nd round pick in 2009 on this one.
    • The caveat to those stats is that in 2014/15 Pirri put up 22 goals in 49 games with Florida and had a 15.4% shooting percentage… That’s extremely high. His career shooting % is 13.6.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmWkd0u67ss

Griffin Reinhart and Darnell Nurse to start the year in Bakersfield.

  • This would be a rare smart move on the Oilers behalf. Neither dman are ready for the pro game and putting them in the position to not only be good players but to dominate is something I am definitely in favour of.

James Wisniewski is still an option for the Oilers.

  • The Oilers are using Wisniewski as their backup plan in case any deal with Barrie falls through. I’ve been told it’s down to term not money.

*NEW* Anton Lander is being actively shopped.

  • I’m not sure how the Oilers could ever think they’ll get any more for him that Yakupov right now. Lander has completely fallen off of the cliff and if anything he’s suited for a 4th line role on the wing. If he was right-handed this might be a different story but would he pass through waivers another time? If so, the Oilers might want to explore the European loan route as they did a couple of seasons ago with Jesse Joensuu

*No reason to get skeptical or anything but the Oiulers have not had great success with players from Finland named Jesse… Niinimaki, Joensuu… I hope to the hockey gords that Puljujarvi is different…*

Don’t get me wrong, I really like Anton Lander because he works his ass off, unfortunately it’s not translating. I wish it would because I’d hate to see him go to a team like Detroit and find his mojo again because you gotta wonder if he’s still got the potential to be a Frans Nielsen-type? He’s not THAT old.

*Last One* Remember when Jim Matheson asked Peter Chiarelli about Yakupov’s trade request at the draft and PC told him there was no trade request from Yak or his agent? A lot of us wondered what Chiarelli was talking about… Well, as it turns out and from what I’ve been told, there’s something to it.

Nail might’ve been upset at not getting top 6 minutes…

  • To that I say, he should’ve performed better on the ice and in the practices.
  • I’m going to butcher the fack out of this quote but a player of some importance (and forgive me for not remembering who) once said that he got paid to practice and games were just the cherry on top.

FURTHER TO THAT…

The Oilers have about $9 million left in cap space. Would they add both Wizniewski AND Barrie if it were possible? Could they? How would that affect Mark Fayne? One would think that he’d be moved ASAP, right? His contract you couldn’t have sitting in the pressbox nor would you want to.

But having Larsson, Barrie, and Wisniewski would take care of the right-handed puck-moving defenceman problem once and for all AND it would let the Oilers send Reinhart and Nurse to Bakersfield with no risk attached.

Klefbom-Larsson
Sekera-Barrie
Davidson-Wisniewski

The Day Before

On this Free Agent’s Day Eve I’d like to talk about some rumblings going on in the Oilogosphere. Potential free agents we haven’t talked about, trade rumours making their way across the Twitter machine, buy outs, and fan reaction to the Taylor Hall trade including my own.

POSSIBLE FREE AGENT ADDITIONS

Stauffer started off the show today talking about the Oilers taking on a “reclamation project” in free agency. A player that was a former 1st rounder with ties to Peter Chiarelli that can play the right-wing and can kick in some offence. Who might that man be?

Brett Connolly – unqualifed free agent

Peter Chiarelli traded two 2nd round picks back in March of 2015 for Brett Connolly. At the time Chiarelli had this to say about the former Prince George Cougar:

“He’s a straight-line player but he makes plays and he can really shoot the puck,”

Connolly’s flashy junior/AHL game has never really translated to the NHL but he’s found a niche in the middle six role and if the Oilers are to move off of Jordan Eberle, not that Connolly would replace Eberle, or Nail Yakupov; I think that would make sense. The other thing is, he’s a natural righty.

Another player that has just landed on the free agent market due to being bought out and would definitely have a place on the Oilers is defenseman James Wisniewski.

After only playing just under 1 game for the ‘Canes, the Carolina Hurricanes are buying Wisniewski out of the final year of his deal worth $5.5M.

He’s not had the most health-consistent career to date with the most games played in a season was 75 in 2013-14 when he was with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Subsequently that was his best year statistically with 7 goals and 44 assists. According to the right-shooting 32 year old’s HERO chart from 2015, he makes his linemates much better and he generates shots. Something that the Oilers are looking for, no?

Could he go the Christian Ehrhoff route contract-wise? Accepting a one-year deal to rejuvenate his career? Of course Ehrhoff didn’t quite cut it after he was bought-out, who knows with Wisniewski?

WHAT IS GOING ON IN COLORADO?

The Avs are set to make a move here eh? Gabriel Landeskog, the Avs captain, is on the market now! He’s the last guy I would’ve thought the Avalanche would move and at this point it sounds like Roy and Sakic are alienating some major names in the Mile High City.

But for shits and giggles, lets say that Lucic decides on Dallas or Detroit instead of Edmonton. That would put the Oilers in a small bit of trouble right? Would you move on Landeskog at that point? Or would you prefer Duchene and/Barrie?

Gabriel Landeskog is a beast of epic proportions and if Lucic landed somewhere else, I’d like to see the Swede in an Oilers uniform. Question being, what would the Oilers deal to get him? Nuge and who else?

WHY YOU CAN’T DEAL NUGE AND EBS

I just want to go over this one more time.

  • Nuge is the most experienced centre on the Oilers at this time. McDavid and Draisaitl haven’t the experience to be given the no.1/2 centre spots alone.
    • The Oilers could very well take a flyer on a centre like Eric Staal or Frans Nielsen and that would soften the blow of losing a player like Nugent-Hopkins but you can’t deal him before you’ve got one of those veteran centres signed.
  • Eberle is a right-handed sniper who is a consistent goal scorer. A veteran to boot.
    • Lose him and the team is left with Yakupov (8 goals last year), Puljujarvi (not one NHL game yet), and Zach Kassian on the right side.
    • The Oilers would be forced to sign or trade to fill for Eberle which is fine too but the team shouldn’t be put behind the 8-ball.
  • The Oilers finally have depth at nearly every forward position. LW is still a problem until Lucic is signed and if not Lucic, then someone else.
  • Lastly, I believe there’s a plan to move one of Leon Draisaitl or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to the wing akin to how the San Jose Sharks use their forwards.

THE HALL TRADE

I knew it was coming and if you listened to Bob Stauffer he said countless times that he thought the fans should be prepared because they might not like the deal the Oilers make to improve the roster. For me, the deal was lopsided. I won’t say they lost the deal because it’s asinine to say that right now. We don’t know how Larsson is going to affect the roster going forward. We don’t know if Hall is going to put up more than 65 points a year in New Jersey either.

I love that Chiarelli went out and got Larsson. He’s just started to blossom as a defenceman and I reckon Chia got him at the perfect moment. My mind salivates at the idea of a healthy Klefbom being paired with a fellow countryman and becoming one of the league’s premiere shutdown tandems.

I asked my man in Sweden what his thoughts were on Larsson and he said this:

When Adam Larsson started to play in SHL as a 17-year old he was one of the most talented swedes I’ve ever seen. He played like 22-23 minutes as a 17-year old.”

The other thing about Larrson is in his draft year he took Skelleftea to the SHL finals for the first time in 35 years!

He didn’t have a good start in NJ. DeBoer and Lamoriello didn’t cut him any slack and he suffered there. I fully expect Larsson to be THAT piece on the back-end the Oilers have been looking for all these years. By the numbers he’s a top shut-down defender. He was an offensive defenseman in Sweden but that wasn’t going to fly in NJ unless your name was Neidermayer.

Give Larsson a chance to show his worth. That’s all I ask.

On a more serious note, I’m extremely disappointed in some of the fanbase and even some of the people covering the team online and in the media. We had years of watching Oilers GMs doing absolutely nothing! Now we’ve got a guy in Chiarelli who’s not afraid to make a move to improve the roster and it’s like Gretzky was traded again. It’s whiny baby bullshit the way that some of the fanbase and media are acting.

We cheer for the logo on the front NOT the name on the back.

Plans B, C, and D

Well, it’s that time of year again that the Oilers begin searching for right-handed defensemen.  Now, we all know about the high-value targets like Hamonic, or the RFAs like Vatanen and Trouba, or the guys with one year left on their deal with high value like Shattenkirk or Burns.  However, even if the Oilers obtain someone who might be considered elite, there’s still a missing hole to address on the second pairing.  It might be that the Oilers manage to land two of this list, but if they don’t, the Oilers need a backup plan.

Assuming the best odds are landing a player like Hamonic, it means the Oilers need a second pairing defenseman with high powerplay skills who’s naturally a right side defenseman.  Now, for this spot, we’re not necessarily looking for a long-term player, but an older (and still effective) defenseman.  Likely, to get a good deal, they’ll have high dollars on their contract but short term.

The targets who fit this are:

Dennis Wideman, 33 years old, natural RHD, with one year left at $5.25mil
Cody Franson, 28 years old, natural RHD, with one year left at $3.325mil
Dan Girardi, 31 years old, natural RHD, with far too many years left at $5.7mil
Mark Streit, 38 years old, left handed defenseman who can play right side, one year left at $5.25mil
Matthew Carle, 31 years old, left handed defenseman who can play right side, two years left at $5.5mil
James Wisniewski, 32 years old, natural RHD with one year left at $5.5mil

First off, let’s eliminate the ones with too many years left.  That means you, Dan Girardi.

The rest have either one or two years left, and with the exception of Franson, are all in the $5.25-$5.5mil range, which the Oilers can afford under the cap.

Now, as a comparator, we’ll use the Oilers existing top right-hand defenseman, the much maligned Mark Fayne.  Let’s see how they stack up…

I won’t go into detailed analysis of each option, we’ll use a simple warrior chart (courtesy of ownthepuck.blogspot.ca) to narrow the list.

First, Dennis Wideman:

So, what do we see here?  Wideman is a very good point producer, especially relative to Fayne, but he’s a black hole defensively who doesn’t even have 3rd pairing defensive skills.  Ok, this isn’t a great solution, he goes in the no pile.

Next up, Cody Franson:

Well, although his offense (surprisingly since he was considered an offensive defenseman) isn’t all that good, his defensive numbers are all very good, and he still provides far more offense than Mark Fayne.  He’s on the 3rd pairing in Buffalo due to Bogosian’s place on the 2nd pair, and Ristolainen’s hard charge up to be the top pairing guy, but he’d be a defensive upgrade on Fayne and his assists at least are second pairing level. Sure, his overall goals and points per 60 isn’t really at a 2nd pairing level, but this is compensated by his top-two defensive play. This player would be an upgrade, and his contract price is agreeable.  We’ll put him in the yes pile.

Next, Mark Streit:

Ok, so he’s older, and he is valuable to Philly, but from the sounds of it they may need the cap space, and they need to upgrade their Top-6 scoring desperately.  As we can see, other than shot suppression, he’s a very good overall defenseman and would be an elite second pairing option, even at his age.   He also goes into the yes pile, he’d be a good mentor and he can still run a powerplay.

After that, Matthew Carle:

Well.. Decent offense..  Brutal defense..   Shows how good Victor Hedman is that he’s basically carrying Carle this playoffs on the top pairing.. This is a clear pass..

Lastly, we have James Wisniewski:

Well, he’s not much of a goal suppressor, but past that, his stats are either second pairing level (for goal generation and shot supression) or first pairing level.  This is a player who can be considered a very quality second-pairing option, and one who can slide into a top pairing and probably perform well with a solid partner.  He’d be a serious upgrade on the second pairing, and if worst came to worse, we could call him a top pairing option next to Klefbom for next season.

So, we have Cody Franson, Mark Streit, and James Wisniewski left.

Of those three, any of them would be upgrades on the second pairing, with Franson or Streit fitting in well here.  Wisniewski, however, might be an intriguing option for the top pairing if the other options fall through, and he’d definitely be worth going after for our second pairing.

Now, when it comes to Streit or Wisniewski, both teams would want scoring.  It’s a weakness for Philly and Carolina right now.  In the case of Streit, Philly could use a winger with size, and they need some cap savings.  Here, the option might be to dangle Benoit Pouliot.  Although he’s a frequent whipping boy for the Oilers, he’s aggressive, skilled, and at a $4mil cap hit would be a $1.5mil savings for the Flyers.  He’s familiar with the East, and he’s the type of player who might fit in well for their system.  Right now, he’s slotting in as the 3rd line LW for the Oilers, so he’s a good player to deal here.

Looking at Carolina, this is a team wanting scoring, and they’d ideally like a scoring center.  However, Nugent-Hopkins is an overpay here, but we do have a scoring forward and a replacement veteran right side defenseman that may pique their interest.  If we were to send them Mark Fayne, along with Nail Yakupov, their combined salaries are roughly equivalent to the Wiz himself.  Carolina would get some possible Top-6 scoring to add to their mix, as well as a replacement defenseman with low term and a low hit who has thrived in the East before.  This, again, may interest them, although it’s hard to say what they’d want for a player who essentially has never played a game for him.  When he was dealt from Columbus to Anaheim, he brought back an overpriced Top-9 forward, a forward prospect and a 2nd round pick.  When he was sent to Carolina, Anaheim took a backup goaltender in trade, since he turned out to be a bad fit in Anaheim he was “sold low”.  I’d guess that a Yakupov + Fayne for Wisniewski and someone who could step in for the Oilers at 3C would be a workable deal here for both teams.

Lastly, when it comes to Franson, Buffalo’s ok on forward, but they could use some potential on the left side of their defense.  We have some potential on our left side in Jordan Oesterle, Joey LaLeggia, Dillon Simpson, and the like who could probably convince Buffalo to make a deal here.

Now, I’ll admit, these aren’t the sexy names we’re looking for.  Having said that, what if the Oilers did all 3 deals?  We deal Benoit Pouliot, Mark Fayne, Nail Yakupov, and Jordan Oesterle, and we obtain the Wiz, Streit and Franson and some form of 3rd line center.

Our defense is now:

Klefbom-Wisniewski
Sekera-Streit
Davidson-Franson

And we let Nurse go down and dominate in the AHL for a season.

Total cost on the back-end..  Well, Franson and Fayne are a salary wash, so we’re adding about $11 million in salary there.  Subtract Gryba and Nikitin from that, we’re adding about $5 million to the back-end.

At forward, we’re subtracting about $6.5 million also, and functionally we lose our 3rd line LW and our 3rd line RW, although both could be considered Top-6 players for their new clubs, it’s a price the Oilers can afford to pay.

So, we end up with a bit of cap room, and the forward core doesn’t take much of a hit.  Optimally, we’d land that true “1st pairing” guy in a big deal, and then land Wisniewski, Franson or Streit (in that order) for the second pairing, and the 3rd can have a few options.

I’ll ask you sport fans.  Although that D doesn’t have the star we want, they’d likely be a damn sight better on the powerplay, penalty kill and 5 on 5, and we wouldn’t be giving up anything high dollar to get them.  Let me know your thoughts!
