Now Cody Franson is off to Chicago on a professional tryout offer but who does that leave for the Oilers to pick up that would come in under say $2M? I’ve got a couple of ideas, some realistic and some not.
Dennis Wideman
What has Chiarelli been known to do with the Oilers and something Glen Sather used to do quite a bit? Pick up reclamation projects, build ’em back up, and then sell then on the high.
Dennis Wideman is a player Chiarelli has traded for and traded away before. He’s familiar with him, Wideman is a righty, he’d be an okay add for the PP due to his shot if that’s something you’re concerned about, and he’s a vet.
He seems to tick off the boxes plus my man on the inside has said they spoke earlier this summer.
PLUS
If the refs decide to screw the Oilers over, Wideman’s there to take care of that… Just kidding!
Cody Franson
If the Oilers were one of the last two teams in on Franson before he decided on Chicago, there’s the very real possibility that Edmonton could pull out the “Versteeg” card and watch how he does during Blackhawks training camp and if Franson impresses, sign him before he signs with Chicago.
Mark Stuart
I can’t see him being any better than Eric Gryba but the PK could use him.
A Trade
The verbiage on McKenzie’s tweet said “add” an experienced defenseman. So, we shouldn’t rule out a trade either. “Experienced” tells me that the candidate would probably be a player in the last year of his deal and closer to 30-35 years old than a younger RFA given the kids coming up.
Bob Stauffer has mentioned Mike Green on numerous occasions. He’ll be a UFA this summer, he’s a right shot, and he’s probably more of a PP specialist these days than 30 minutes a night defender but he’s got a hefty contract to be adding him for the entire season.
Toby Enstrom and Jason Garrison are also upcoming UFAs who could work the man-advantage. Although Enstrom is a lefty.
A long shot might be 40 year old Zdeno Chara. I’ve mentioned him before and of course I realize the relationship between Chiarelli and Sweeney is frosty at best but if Boston is out of it and/or Chara wants out to try and win another cup, the Oilers could afford his salary with ease. He’s not a like-for-like replacement for Sekera but the two played together at the World Cup last summer very well. Chara is a helluva mentor to the young dmen too.

Welcome to another episode of Stauffer Says… Where we recap some of the things that the host of Oilers Now!, Bob Stauffer, has said that should bring our ears to attention as fans of the greatest hockey club in the world!
So, over the last two days The Stauff has mentioned the following players:

I haven’t been through all of today’s episode yet but I wanted to bring this stuff up first and if Spector has something notable to mention, I’ll write another article entitled, “Spector Says!”…
The Oilers Defence (August 30th Episode)
“I’m going to be very interested to see how a Klefbom pairing with Adam Larsson could maybe play 20 minutes a game and be the Oilers top pairing, then move everybody else down in a spot that they belong. Maybe Sekera plays with Fayne on a second pairing. Maybe Davidson playing with Darnell Nurse on the third pairing.
And who knows, maybe there may be another addition. Specifically on the right side.”

This is following the show from Monday where he talked about Adam McQuaid and then subsequently had Bruins beat writer, Joe Haggerty, as a guest on the same show. Maybe it’s nothing though.
I asked my insider about McQuaid and it said that Chiarelli “likes him” but that’s it. Of course Chiarelli likes him, he’s definitely a Chia-type player and the team does need a righty for the third pairing but wouldn’t Eric Gryba be a cheaper option if they were looking for a stay-at-home blueliner? McQuaid makes $3M per year, does he not?
BUFFALO SABRES (August 30th Episode)
“The Buffalo Sabres are an org. that was hoping to get Jimmy Vesey, they did not. They were quite upset at the fact that they did not get Vesey and they do need some scoring…”
Stauffer then talks about the Evander Kane situation but adds this,
“…Buffalo needs some help scoring on the wing. So, who is to say? Do I think Cody Franson could be had by trade? Absolutely.”
So we’re back on the Franson train. I’ve always liked his size and skating ability and the year he decided to shoot the puck he did well. For whatever reason, he’s gone trigger shy recently and this is a sentiment that is shared from my source. Oilers like his size but figure he doesn’t shoot the pill enough.
Stauffer added this to the Franson comments,
“They’ve got another guy named Casey Nelson, who came in late last year, who could come in and probably play third pairing minutes and that might make a guy like Franson; who really was, frankly, not deployed in the manner where he would be successful because he didn’t get a lot of 1st unit powerplay time in Buffalo last year. That might make a guy like Franson expendable. So, maybe they could use a little bit of offense.
Well, do the Oilers have anything they could potentially move offensively?
Back to Nail Yakupov, right? Now that being said, I don’t know if I would do Yakupov for Cody Franson straight up. I think the Sabres would be prepared to move Franson for, frankly speaking, relatively little and I think at this stage; you look at that.
You may not even have to give up Yakupov to get Franson but would Franson be a good short-term 1-year thing.”
I reckon this is just Stauffer pontificating on different options. If the Oilers wanted Franson, they could get him but I wonder; how different are the values for Franson and Yakupov at this point?
NAIL YAKUPOV
When I asked about Nail Yakupov I was told that he will be with the team until around the trade deadline. Sometimes radio guys just need something to talk about and Yak is an easy topic to go on. I was also told that there HAVE been offers on Yak but nothing to the Oilers satisfaction to date. As a person, the Oilers love him, but he hasn’t produced to the level expected of him and there are some in the Oilers organisation that believe that Jesse Puljujarvi is already better than him.

So I imagine that places Puljujarvi on the 2nd line with Nuge and Yak on the third line with Draisaitl if we’re contemplating line combos.
Now the kicker… Nail is going to have a great year because that’s what the majority of players have in contract years and the fact that he wants out will motivate him even more. This is a perfect storm for Edmonton because they need to move him or risk losing him for nothing at the expansion draft. Even if he does have a 60 point year, his time in Edmonton has been soured and he’ll be looking for major skrilla if said breakout does occur.
McDavid, Nurse, Reinhart, and Draisaitl are all going to need new contracts sooner than later and that plays into things as well.
A 3rd rounder is what I suspect the Oilers fetch for him if not more.
MIKE RICHARDS (August 30th Episode)
“In terms of a potential centre, I know there’s been lots of names bandied about. I would prefer to go with a guy that’s a little bit younger on a PTO….
We talked about Dominic Moore and Cody Hodgson a couple of days ago here and since then Moore has signed on with the Bruins. But Stauffer does talk drop Mike Richards’ name…
“If I were Mike Richards and I’m looking to jump start things. If I were a player like that, that to me might the scenario where I can beat out Anton Lander for a spot in Edmonton. My guess is that Mike Richards might have an opportunity with a couple of other organizations as well.”
I asked my source about Richards and it said that Richards “might” come and that Chiarelli will look at him IF he can help the team at the third line centre position.
I’m not completely sold on Richards. I watched him get his ass handed to him during the Pens/Caps playoff series and I sort of soured on him but as Brendan Ullrich pointed out, Richards came in half way through the season and it’s possible that may have had an impact on his performance. Then again, one of the concerns with Richards coming back was his ability to keep up…
As for Anton Lander, I’ve been told that he’d best have the best training camp of his career or else he’ll find himself in the AHL for the remainder of his contract.
GRIFFIN REINHART
On the August 29th episode of Oilers Now! Bob Stauffer was talking about Griffin Reinhart and it sounded like because of Reinhart’s contract and its bonus structure, that he’d be in Bakersfield to start the year. But as Bob says, he’s a left-shot that can play the right point. That has to count for something. But if the Oilers have Draisaitl, Puljujarvi, McDavid, and Nurse all on the big team; that’s a lot of bonus going on.
Would the Oilers be willing to move on from Griffin Reinhart in fear of losing him at the expansion draft do you think? Or will there simply be better players available on the Oilers roster for Las Vegas to take?
Personally, I still think he’s going to come good for Edmonton but I’m an eternal optimist and one has to ask himself, who does Reinhart beat out for a spot on the Oilers roster next year or the year after? Darnell Nurse would have to fall into a wood-chipper for Reinhart to beat him out. Sekera looks to have his spot cemented and unless Oscar Klefbom has his foot amputated, he looks to be sorted.
I want to say Reinhart could just go over to the right-side but it seems as if the Oilers are hell-bent on getting the lefty-righty pairings done up.
Would you move him? Because the more you look at his situation, it gets worse and worse. Ethan Bear is coming soon. Matt Benning was just signed. What about Jordan Oesterle and Joey LaLeggia? Will Dillon Simpson finally come good for the Oilers? Zayat Paigin is burning up the KHL right now and this Niemelainen fella playing in Saginaw, how long until he’s playing in the Bake? David Musil anybody?…
Peter Chiarelli might have to buck up, admit mistake and move on from Reinhart sooner than later.

Well, it’s that time of year again that the Oilers begin searching for right-handed defensemen. Now, we all know about the high-value targets like Hamonic, or the RFAs like Vatanen and Trouba, or the guys with one year left on their deal with high value like Shattenkirk or Burns. However, even if the Oilers obtain someone who might be considered elite, there’s still a missing hole to address on the second pairing. It might be that the Oilers manage to land two of this list, but if they don’t, the Oilers need a backup plan.
Assuming the best odds are landing a player like Hamonic, it means the Oilers need a second pairing defenseman with high powerplay skills who’s naturally a right side defenseman. Now, for this spot, we’re not necessarily looking for a long-term player, but an older (and still effective) defenseman. Likely, to get a good deal, they’ll have high dollars on their contract but short term.
The targets who fit this are:
Dennis Wideman, 33 years old, natural RHD, with one year left at $5.25mil Cody Franson, 28 years old, natural RHD, with one year left at $3.325mil Dan Girardi, 31 years old, natural RHD, with far too many years left at $5.7mil Mark Streit, 38 years old, left handed defenseman who can play right side, one year left at $5.25mil Matthew Carle, 31 years old, left handed defenseman who can play right side, two years left at $5.5mil James Wisniewski, 32 years old, natural RHD with one year left at $5.5mil
First off, let’s eliminate the ones with too many years left. That means you, Dan Girardi.
The rest have either one or two years left, and with the exception of Franson, are all in the $5.25-$5.5mil range, which the Oilers can afford under the cap.
Now, as a comparator, we’ll use the Oilers existing top right-hand defenseman, the much maligned Mark Fayne. Let’s see how they stack up…
I won’t go into detailed analysis of each option, we’ll use a simple warrior chart (courtesy of ownthepuck.blogspot.ca) to narrow the list.
First, Dennis Wideman:
So, what do we see here? Wideman is a very good point producer, especially relative to Fayne, but he’s a black hole defensively who doesn’t even have 3rd pairing defensive skills. Ok, this isn’t a great solution, he goes in the no pile.
Next up, Cody Franson:
Well, although his offense (surprisingly since he was considered an offensive defenseman) isn’t all that good, his defensive numbers are all very good, and he still provides far more offense than Mark Fayne. He’s on the 3rd pairing in Buffalo due to Bogosian’s place on the 2nd pair, and Ristolainen’s hard charge up to be the top pairing guy, but he’d be a defensive upgrade on Fayne and his assists at least are second pairing level. Sure, his overall goals and points per 60 isn’t really at a 2nd pairing level, but this is compensated by his top-two defensive play.This player would be an upgrade, and his contract price is agreeable. We’ll put him in the yes pile.
Next, Mark Streit:
Ok, so he’s older, and he is valuable to Philly, but from the sounds of it they may need the cap space, and they need to upgrade their Top-6 scoring desperately. As we can see, other than shot suppression, he’s a very good overall defenseman and would be an elite second pairing option, even at his age. He also goes into the yes pile, he’d be a good mentor and he can still run a powerplay.
After that, Matthew Carle:
Well.. Decent offense.. Brutal defense.. Shows how good Victor Hedman is that he’s basically carrying Carle this playoffs on the top pairing.. This is a clear pass..
Lastly, we have James Wisniewski:
Well, he’s not much of a goal suppressor, but past that, his stats are either second pairing level (for goal generation and shot supression) or first pairing level. This is a player who can be considered a very quality second-pairing option, and one who can slide into a top pairing and probably perform well with a solid partner. He’d be a serious upgrade on the second pairing, and if worst came to worse, we could call him a top pairing option next to Klefbom for next season.
So, we have Cody Franson, Mark Streit, and James Wisniewski left.
Of those three, any of them would be upgrades on the second pairing, with Franson or Streit fitting in well here. Wisniewski, however, might be an intriguing option for the top pairing if the other options fall through, and he’d definitely be worth going after for our second pairing.
Now, when it comes to Streit or Wisniewski, both teams would want scoring. It’s a weakness for Philly and Carolina right now. In the case of Streit, Philly could use a winger with size, and they need some cap savings. Here, the option might be to dangle Benoit Pouliot. Although he’s a frequent whipping boy for the Oilers, he’s aggressive, skilled, and at a $4mil cap hit would be a $1.5mil savings for the Flyers. He’s familiar with the East, and he’s the type of player who might fit in well for their system. Right now, he’s slotting in as the 3rd line LW for the Oilers, so he’s a good player to deal here.
Looking at Carolina, this is a team wanting scoring, and they’d ideally like a scoring center. However, Nugent-Hopkins is an overpay here, but we do have a scoring forward and a replacement veteran right side defenseman that may pique their interest. If we were to send them Mark Fayne, along with Nail Yakupov, their combined salaries are roughly equivalent to the Wiz himself. Carolina would get some possible Top-6 scoring to add to their mix, as well as a replacement defenseman with low term and a low hit who has thrived in the East before. This, again, may interest them, although it’s hard to say what they’d want for a player who essentially has never played a game for him. When he was dealt from Columbus to Anaheim, he brought back an overpriced Top-9 forward, a forward prospect and a 2nd round pick. When he was sent to Carolina, Anaheim took a backup goaltender in trade, since he turned out to be a bad fit in Anaheim he was “sold low”. I’d guess that a Yakupov + Fayne for Wisniewski and someone who could step in for the Oilers at 3C would be a workable deal here for both teams.
Lastly, when it comes to Franson, Buffalo’s ok on forward, but they could use some potential on the left side of their defense. We have some potential on our left side in Jordan Oesterle, Joey LaLeggia, Dillon Simpson, and the like who could probably convince Buffalo to make a deal here.
Now, I’ll admit, these aren’t the sexy names we’re looking for. Having said that, what if the Oilers did all 3 deals? We deal Benoit Pouliot, Mark Fayne, Nail Yakupov, and Jordan Oesterle, and we obtain the Wiz, Streit and Franson and some form of 3rd line center.
Our defense is now:
Klefbom-Wisniewski
Sekera-Streit
Davidson-Franson
And we let Nurse go down and dominate in the AHL for a season.
Total cost on the back-end.. Well, Franson and Fayne are a salary wash, so we’re adding about $11 million in salary there. Subtract Gryba and Nikitin from that, we’re adding about $5 million to the back-end.
At forward, we’re subtracting about $6.5 million also, and functionally we lose our 3rd line LW and our 3rd line RW, although both could be considered Top-6 players for their new clubs, it’s a price the Oilers can afford to pay.
So, we end up with a bit of cap room, and the forward core doesn’t take much of a hit. Optimally, we’d land that true “1st pairing” guy in a big deal, and then land Wisniewski, Franson or Streit (in that order) for the second pairing, and the 3rd can have a few options.
I’ll ask you sport fans. Although that D doesn’t have the star we want, they’d likely be a damn sight better on the powerplay, penalty kill and 5 on 5, and we wouldn’t be giving up anything high dollar to get them. Let me know your thoughts!

Boy the Toronto Maple Leafs are making waves today! Dion Phaneuf becomes a Senator (Are they paving the way for Steven Stamkos to come home?) and now there are rumblings that they could be involved in a three-way trade with the Oilers and the Sabres! Add to that the fact that Griffin Reinhart (Not Darnell Nurse…) was sent down to Bakersfield, Justin Schultz is a healthy scratch for the Oilers’ game versus the New Jersey Devils on Martin Brodeur’s jersey retirement night AND Cody Franson is a healthy scratch for the Sabres…

My source told me WEEKS AGO here that the Sabres and Oilers were talking Schultz, so this isn’t breaking news to those that follow the site. But maybe the Sabres were waiting on the Phaneuf deal’s shoe to drop in order to make this move closer to happening.
To add to the Sabres rumour, Tampa Bay was also a team I was told were looking at Schultz and they just lost Jason Garrison…
On today’s episode of Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer dove in right off the bat with news that Schultz’s healthy scratch could be trade related. Later on in the segment, he noted that he was sure that something could happen before the trade deadline but was skeptical that anything would happen in the duration of his show.
In addition, Renaud Lavoie was the gentleman that broke the news.

As for the three-way deal, it’s just rumoured at the moment, but essentially Schultz would go to Buffalo, Franson would head back to Toronto where he enjoyed some success before being dealt to Nashville last year and then signing with the Sabres this year, and prospects would head back to Edmonton.
No word on any prospects has leaked out yet. Paul Almeida of Saturday Sports Extra indicated that he likes a guy in the Sabres system named Will Borgen, a 6’2″ 190lb two-way defenceman. He’s playing for St.Cloud in the NCAA right now and is a former 4th round pick in 2015. Hockey’s Future had this to say about him:
Borgen is an athletic, two-way skating defenseman. He is not the biggest player on the ice, but is willing to engage physically and competes every shift. He has proven he can score at the high school level, but lacks dynamic offensive ability to really translate to the pros.
He IS right-handed but I’d sure like it if the Oilers were to aim little higher. That being said, this player is just one that Almeida said he liked and premised on a one-for-one deal, not a three-way.
So i read Franson #Sabres and Schultz #Oilers healthy scratches. I'd prefer prospect Will Borgen from the Sabres. Saw him at WJ with USA
The Sabres prospects do not impress me at all, I’m not sure I’d listen to any deals if Tim Murray was offering them. But the Maple Leafs’ have a plethora of good-looking prospects that would help the Oilers depth. Andrew Neilsen, Viktor Loov, and Scott Harrington are large bodied stay-at-home dmen with a physical edge. Connor Brown and Zach Hyman are skilled left-wingers and Brendan Leipsic and Dmytro Timashov are compact but crafty right-wingers with big compete levels and an ability to put points on the board.
As for Bob Stauffer, he’s certain that the Oilers can get more than the 4th round pick that Mark Spector was speculating on.

Well here we sit on Sunday morning and it is a real slow news day for the Edmonton Oilers. So slow in fact that I have decided to debut my new weekly series. Welcome to the madhouse will be a point-form style blog that will not only cover Oilers news but really anything that I feel like commenting at the time. So fair warning people, if you want to read an article solely about hockey this one may not be for you from time to time. Today you are in luck though because I have a lot going on inside the old hat rack that I want to touch on. So let’s get right to it, enter if you dare.
The NHL has agreed to try three-on-three overtime format this season and I have seen a lot of good things being written about it. I mean come on, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that by going to this new format we will some really fast hockey. Teams with a lot of speed up front will be looking to push the pace will the bigger stronger teams struggle to keep them to the outside. I for one am stoked to see the Oilers playing three-on-three as we have a bevy of speedy players up front and potentially on the back-end as well. Can you imagine Hall and McDavid flying down the ice with that much room to move? Like I said, the majority of feedback that I have seen is positive but one goalie has remarked that he thinks that it will be harder on the net-minders. Cory Schneider had this to say when discussing the new format. Not exactly a ringing endorsement but a scathing review either. Check out his comments at the end of the post about goalie skill levels and making nets larger to bring out more skill. Interesting hearing that coming from a goalie.
All Edmonton Oilers fans know there is a great big elephant in the room this morning. That beloved pachyderm is present courtesy of the second buy-out window granted to the franchise for filing the Schultz arbitration. I wrote a piece late last week discussing the merits and pitfalls of using said buy-out and I am still on record as being in favour of using it. If the space can be freed to sign Cody Franson or Christian Ehrhoff for 3 years I say do it. There is a lot of space coming available next summer with both Ben Scrivens and Teddy Purcell coming off the books next year so I say do it! Fortune favours the bold! Or at least that is what we are told, we have never seen the bold we were so falsely promised… The only key RFA’s next summer are Oscar Klefbom and Justin Schultz with Schultz being moved if Franson signs. We have no need of Schultz if we have a better version of the player here.
What would the addition of a player like Franson do to players like Nurse? Adding Franson pushes everyone but possibly Sekera and Fayne down the depth chart. The addition of a player of that caliber would mean that both Griffin Reinhart and Darnell Nurse start the season in Bakersfield and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Nurse has a grand total of six games as pro and Reinhart, while having a full season of AHL experience, still has only eight NHL games on his resume. Just because they are very highly touted prospects doesn’t mean they will be gifted roster spots like in years past. New management seems more than capable of separating the wheat from the chaff so to speak. I think that regardless of who the players are the seven or eight best will be on the opening night roster. Not just the most expensive…
Talking about Darnell Nurse, just how crazy good is this kid? He has the ability, size, mean streak, and speed to be the real number one defender that we so desperately need. Of course that is the best case scenario and even if it does come to fruition it won’t be for a few years yet as Darnell progresses as a player. At this point I think the worst case is a second pairing player but I just see too much skill and too many natural physical gifts to not be at least a top pairing guy.
Monday, besides being the end of the Oilers 48 hour buy-out window, is the deadline for official submitting an expansion bid. Originally it was thought that we would see bids coming from Las Vegas, Quebec City, and Seattle. It came to light Friday that the possible ownership group in Seattle would not be submitting a bid after arena issues were not able to be worked out in time. There is talk of second bid coming from the Seattle area but it is uncertain whether the league will be keen to be outside of the greater Seattle or if they will refuse the $500 million franchise fee that is expected from each new team. It does however seem all but a certainty that Quebecor media will be handing their bid in along with the $10 million deposit. And with Las Vegas proceeding with the building of a fantastic new arena complex it is a virtual guarantee that the prospective owners have all their forms filled out and a giant suitcase full of money to wheel into NHL headquarters tomorrow morning.
I was on Twitter last night and our very own Beer League Hero brought up the polarizing discussion of the Big E. Of course I mean Eric Lindros. One of the most physically dominant skilled players I have ever had the opportunity to watch. BLH asked if, and I am paraphrasing of course, we will ever see a player like Lindros again? It is a great topic for discussion as there was no one like him ever before he joined the league and hasn’t been anyone like him since. He has made many errors along the way. From his refusal to join the Nordiques to his off-ice issues that have been well documented. I am not going to condone his actions as there is no reason for what took place to ever happen but I am thinking that those items need to be separated when discussing him as a hockey player. If we are talking about what he is like as a person then by all means bring on the character attacks and prior misdeeds but in a discussion about him as a player shouldn’t revolve around what he did in a night club 20 plus years ago. Just my opinion.
Will the summer of insanity ever end for the Boston Bruins and general manager Don Sweeney? He traded one of the top up and coming defenseman in the entire league in Dougie Hamilton for next to nothing in return. He had a better offer, although marginally, from former Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli but had to add in an extra player on top in an attempt to stick it to our Chia pet. Then he moved power forward Milan Lucic to the Los Angeles Kings for promising young goalie Martin Jones and the 13th overall pick in the 2015 draft. The pick was used to select Jakub Zboril, a defender for the Saint Johns Sea Dogs of the QMJHL. I know nothing about this young fella so I won’t make any judgement as far as whether he is a good pick at that point of the draft. I do understand Boston adding defense at the draft though. Likely an attempt to find a replacement for Hamilton but that isn’t coming any time soon. Beleskey was an okay add for the team and was even kept below 4 million per which is well below what he was asking. Overall I don’t know that either of the two trades they made were any good. The Hamilton trade will take years to decide on but it is a clear win for Calgary right now. The Lucic trade was one I liked but personally I think the guy is over-rated to begin with, The point of all of this is that Boston subtracted one of the best defensemen they had and didn’t bring anyone that can be considered close to a replacement. Sweeney is on record as saying that his team may not be doing adding yet. With the expectation being a playoff berth next year they damn sure better not be done. This team is worse than they were prior to the NHL draft that is for sure.
